Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings have been widely applied to the mechanical components, cutting tools due to properties of high hardness and wear resistance. Among them, hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) coatings are well-known for their low friction properties, stable production of thin and thick film, they were reported to be easily worn away under high temperature. Non-hydrogenated tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) is an ideal for industrial applicability due to good thermal stability from high $sp^3$-bonding fraction ranging from 70 to 80 %. However, the large compressive stress of ta-C coating limits to apply thick ta-C coating. In this study, the thick ta-C coating was deposited onto Inconel alloy disk by the FCVA technique. The thickness of the ta-C coating was about $3.5{\mu}m$. The tribological behaviors of ta-C coated disks sliding against $Si_3N_4$ balls were examined under elevated temperature divided into 23, 100, 200 and $300^{\circ}C$. The range of temperature was setting up until peel off observed. The experimental results showed that the friction coefficient was decreased from 0.14 to 0.05 with increasing temperature up to $200^{\circ}C$. At $300^{\circ}C$, the friction coefficient was dramatically increased over 5,000 cycles and then delaminated. These phenomenon was summarized two kinds of reasons: (1) Thermal degradation and (2) graphitization of ta-C coating. At first, the reason of thermal degradation was demonstrated by wear rate calculation. The wear rate of ta-C coatings showed an increasing trend with elevated temperature. For investigation of relationship between hardness and graphitization, thick ta-C coatings(2, 3 and $5{\mu}m$) were additionally deposited. As the thickness of ta-C coating was increased, hardness decreased from 58 to 49 GPa, which means that graphitization was accelerated. Therefore, now we are trying to increase $sp^3$ fraction of ta-C coating and control the coating parameters for thermal stability of thick ta-C at high temperatures.

Micron size Co-alloy 800 (T800) powder is coated on the high temperature, oxidation and corrosion resistant super alloy Inconel 718 substrate by the optimal high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) thermal spray coating process developed by this laboratory. For the study of durability improvement of high speed spindle operating without lubricants, friction and sliding wear behaviors of the coatings are investigated both at room and at an elevated temperature of $1000^{\circ}F(538^{\circ}C)$. Friction coefficients, wear traces and wear debris of coatings are drastically reduced compared to those of non-coated surface of Inconel 718 substrate both at room temperature and at $538^{\circ}C$. Friction coefficients and wear traces of both coated and non-coated surfaces are drastically reduced at higher temperature of $538^{\circ}C$ compared with those at room temperature. At high temperature, the brittle oxides such as CoO, $Co_{3}O_{4}$, $MoO_2$ and $MoO_3$ are formed rapidly on the sliding surfaces, and the brittle oxide phases are easily attrited by reciprocating slides at high temperature through oxidation and abrasive wear mechanisms. The brittle solid oxide particles, softens, melts and partial-melts play roles as solid and liquid lubricants reducing friction coefficient and wear. These show that the coating is highly recommendable for the durability improvement coating on the machine component surfaces vulnerable to frictional heat and wear.

Coating process plays an important role in information technology such as display, battery, chip manufacturing and so on. However, due to complexity of coating material and fast deformation of the coating flow, the process is hard to control and it is difficult to maintain the desired quality of the products. Moreover, it is hard to measure the coating process because of severe processing conditions such as high drying temperature, high deformation coating flow, and sensitivity to the processing variables etc. In this article, the coating process is to be re-illuminated from the rheological perspectives. The practical approach to analyze and quantify the coating process is discussed with respect to coating materials, coating flow and drying process. The ideas on the rheology control of coating materials, pressure and wet thickness control in patch coating process, and stress measurement during drying process will be discussed.

Metal coating on ceramic powder has long been attracting interest for various applications such as superconductor where the brittle nature of high temperature ceramic superconductor was complemented by silver coating and metalloceramics where mechanical property improvement was achieved via electroless plating. More recently it has become of great interest in embedded passive device applications since metal coating on ceramic particles may result in the enhancement of the dielectric properties of ceramic-polymer composite capacitors. In our study, nickel ion-containing solution was used for coating commercial capacitor-grade $BaTiO_3$ powder. After filtering process, the powder was dried and heat-treated in 5% forming gas at $900^{\circ}C$. XRD and TEM were utilized for the observation of crystallization behavior and morphology of the particles. It was found that the nickel coating characteristics were strongly dependent on the several parameters and processing variables, such as starting $BaTiO_3$ particle size, nickel source, solution chemistry, coating temperature and time. In this paper, the effects of these variables on the coating characteristics will be presented in some detail.
Conjugate heat analysis on a high pressure turbine stage including secondary flow paths has been carried out. The secondary flow paths were designed to be located in front of the nozzle and between the nozzle and rotor domains. Thermal boundary conditions such as empirical based temperature or heat transfer coefficient were specified at nozzle and rotor solid domains. To create heat transfer interface between the nozzle solid domain and the rotor fluid domain, frozen rotor with automatic pitch control was used assuming that there is little temperature variation along the circumferential direction at the nozzle solid and rotor fluid domain interface. The simulation results showed that secondary flow injected from the secondary flow path not only prevents main flow from penetrating into the secondary flow path, but also effectively cools down the nozzle and rotor surfaces. Also thermal barrier coating with different thickness was numerically implemented on the nozzle surface. The thermal barrier coating further reduces temperature gradient over the entire nozzle surface as well as the overall temperature level.
Porous copper bromide (CuBr) films are highly advantageous for detecting ammonia (NH3). The fabrication of porous CuBr films requires complex high-temperature processes or multistep processes. Herein, we report the uncomplicated preparation of porous CuBr films by a spin-coating method and the films' excellent NH3 sensing properties. The porous films were prepared by spin-coating 100, 150, and 200 mM CuBr solutions, and then dried in a vacuum oven for 2 h. All the films showed a high NH3 response; in particular, the film prepared using a 100 mM CuBr solution showed an extremely high response (resistance ratio = 852) to 5 ppm NH3. The film also showed fast response and recovery times, 272 s and 10 s respectively, even at room temperature. The outstanding NH3 sensing characteristics were explained in relation to the porosity and thickness of the prepared films. The high-performance NH3 sensors used in this study can be used for both indoor air quality and environmental monitoring applications.
In developing high temperature molds with advantages of the sand and precision (investment) castings, mechanical properties of the mold were improved through homogeneous coating of starting powders with an inorganic binder and improvement of fabrication process. Beads with mullite composition were employed for properties of the mold under high temperature, which was compared with artificial sands. Precursors of silica and sodium oxide were used as starting materials for an inorganic binder to achieve homogeneous coating on the starting powders. Strength was enhanced by the glass phase converted from the inorganic binder through heat treatment process. Also, two kinds of process, wet and dry processes, were incorporated to prepare mold specimens. Consequently, fabrication process of the mold with superior strength and high temperature applicability, compared with the previous molds for sand casting, could be suggested through control of the starting material and enhancement of the vitrification efficiency.

Ni-rich layered oxides $Li(Ni_xCo_yMn_z)O_2$ (x + y + z = 1) have been extensively studied in recent times owing to their high capacity and low cost and can possibly replace $LiCoO_2$ in the near future. However, these layered oxides suffer from problems related to the capacity fading, thermal stability, and safety at high voltages. In this study, we use surface coating as a strategy to improve the thermal stability at higher voltages. The uniform and conformal $Al_2O_3$ coating on prefabricated electrodes using atomic layer deposition significantly prevented surface degradation over prolonged cycling. Initial capacity of 190, 199, 188 and $166mAh\;g^{-1}$ is obtained for pristine, 2, 5 and 10 cycles of ALD coated samples at 0.2C and maintains 145, 158, 151 and $130mAh\;g^{-1}$ for high current rate of 2C in room temperature. The two-cycle $Al_2O_3$ modified cathode retained 75% of its capacity after 500 cycles at 5C with 0.05% capacity decay per cycle, compared with 46.5% retention for a pristine electrode, at an elevated temperature. Despite the insulating nature of the $Al_2O_3$ coating, a thin layer is sufficient to improve the capacity retention at a high temperature. The $Al_2O_3$ coating can prevent the detrimental surface reactions at a high temperature. Thus, the morphology of the active material is well-maintained even after extensive cycling, whereas the bare electrode undergoes severe degradation.

Because of the high-rise and bigger building structure, high strength concrete's demand was increased. However, chemicophysical property of concrete is changed by high temperature. Therefore, this study evaluated on spalling properties of 80MPa high strength concrete with fireproof coating. The result, when complex fireproof coating spread on concrete, it has good fire safety that was thinner than single fireproof coating spread on concrete.

Molybdate chemical conversion coating layer formed on EGI has been studied in view of corrosion resistance, surface morphologies, and phases formed. It was found that coating layer consists of$ MoO_3$, $MoO_2$, Mo oxides having lower valences than 4 and ZnO. It is interesting to note that the coating layer formed at high Mo concentration (30 g/l) in the temperature range of $40-60^{\circ}C$ exhibited relatively high corrosion resistance, although thickness of coating layer is nearly identical with those formed under the other conditions. It was believed that an increase of driving force due to high Mo concentration plays an important role in the formation of corrosion-resistant coating layer, probably due to tile formation of dense coating layer.
