An Effective P-Frame Transcoding from H.264 to MPEG-2 (H.264 to MPEG-2 Transcoding을 위한 효율적인 P-Frame 변환 방법)

  • After the launch of MPEG-2, it is widely used in multimedia applications like a Digital-TV or a DVD. Then, After the launch of H.264 at 2004, it has been expected to replace MPEG-2 and services IPTV and DMB. As we have been used to MPEG-2 devices by this time, we can not access H.264 Broadcast with MPEG-2 device. So We propose a new approach to transcode H.264 video into MPEG-2 form which can facilitate to display H.264 video with MPEG-2 device. To reduce the quality loss by transcoding, we use CPDT(Cascaded Pixel Domain Transcoder) structure. And to minimize processing time, SKIP block, INTRA block and motion vectors obtain from decoding process is employed for transcoding. we use BMA(Boundary Matching Algorithm) to select only one from candidate motion vectors. Experimental results show a considerable improved PSNR with reduction in processing time compared with existing methods.

Adaptive Video Coding by Wavelet Transform (웨이브렛 변환에 의한 적응적 동영상 부호화)

  • In this paper, picture set filter is proposed for preserving compression ratio and video qualify. This filter controls the compression ratio of each frame depending on the correlation to the reference frame by selectively eliminating less important high-resolution areas. Consequently, video quality can be preserved and bit rate can be controlled adaptively. In the simulation, to test the performance of the proposed coding method, comparisons with the full search block matching algorithm and the differential image coding algorithm are made. In the former case, video quality, compression ratio and encoding time is improved. In the latter case, video quality is degraded, but compression ratio and encoding time is improved. Consequently. the proposed method shows a reasonably good performance over existing ones.

Wavelet Transform Coding for Image Conference (화상회의를 위한 웨이브렛 변환 부호화)

  • In this paper. wavelet transform coding for image conference is studied. Original video frames are transformed into hierarchical pyramidal images with multiresolution using the band property of wavelet transform coefficients. Moving information between neighboring frames is obtained from the low-resolution band. Also, to control the video coding procedure. a new picture set filter is proposed. This filter controls the compression ratio of each frame depending on the correlation to the reference frame by selectively eliminating less important high-resolution areas.   • Low-power motion estimation is required for video coding in portable information devices. In this paper, we propose a low-power motion estimation algorithm and 1-D systolic may VLSI architecture using full search block matching algorithm (FSBMA). Main power dissipation sources of FSBMA are complex computations and frequent memory accesses for data in the search area. In the proposed algorithm, memory accesses and computations are reduced by using 1D PE (processing array) array architecture performing motion estimation of two neighboring blocks in parallel and by skipping unnecessary computations during motion estimation. The VLSI implementation results of the algorithm show that the proposed VLSI architecture can save 9.3% power dissipation and can operate two times faster than an existing low-power motion estimator.

Reconstruction of High Resolution Images by ARPS Motion Estimation and POCS Restoration (ARPS 움직임 추정과 POCS 복원을 동시에 이용하는 HR 영상 재구성)

  • In POCS (projection onto convex sets)-based reconstruction of HR (high resolution) image, the quality of reconstructed image is gradually improved through iterative motion estimation and image restoration. The amount of computation, however, increases because of the repeated inter-frame motion estimation. In this paper, an HR reconstruction algorithm is proposed where modified ARPS (adaptive rood pattern search) and POCS are simultaneously performed. In the modified ARPS, the motion estimates obtained from phase correlation or from the previous steps in POCS restoration are utilized as the initial reference in the motion estimation. Moreover, estimated motion is regularized with reference to the neighboring blocks' motion to enhance the reliability. Computer simulation results show that, when compared to conventional methods which are composed of full search block matching and POCS restoration, the proposed method is about 30 times faster and yet produces HR images of almost equal or better quality.

A Study on the Shape-Based Motion Estimation For MCFI (MCFI 구현을 위한 형태 기반 움직임 예측에 관한 연구)

  • Motion Compensated Frame Interpolation(MCFI) has been used to reduce motion jerkiness for dynamic scenes and motion blurriness for LCD-panel display as post processing for large screen and full HD(high definition) display. Conventionally, block matching algorithms (BMA) are widely used to do motion estimation for simplicity of implementation. However, there are still several drawbacks. So in this paper, we propose a novel shape-based ME algorithm to increase accuracy and reduce ME computational cost. To increase ME accuracy, we do motion estimation based on shape of moving objects. And only moving areas are included for motion estimation to reduce computational cost. The results show that the computational cost is 25 % lower than full search BMA, while the performance is similar or is better, especially in the fast moving region.

  • The general problems of recovering 3D for 2D imagery require the depth information for each picture element form focus. The manual creation of those 3D models is consuming time and cost expensive. The goal in this paper is to simplify the depth estimation algorithm that extracts the depth information of every region from monocular image sequence with camera translation to implement 3D video in realtime. The paper is based on the property that the motion of every point within image which taken from camera translation depends on the depth information. Full-search motion estimation based on block matching algorithm is exploited at first step and ten, motion vectors are compensated for the effect by camera rotation and zooming. We have introduced the algorithm that estimates motion of object by analysis of monocular motion picture and also calculates the averages of frame depth and relative depth of region to the average depth. Simulation results show that the depth of region belongs to a near object or a distant object is in accord with relative depth that human visual system recognizes.

Enhanced Multiresolution Motion Estimation Using Reduction of One-Pixel Shift (단화소 이동 감쇠를 이용한 향상된 다중해상도 움직임 예측 방법)

  • In this paper, enhanced multiresolution motion estimation(MRME) using reduction of one-pixel shift in wavelet domain is proposed. Conventional multiresolution motion estimation using hierarchical relationship of wavelet coefficient has difficulty for accurate motion estimation due to shift-variant property by decimation process of the wavelet transform. Therefore, to overcome shift-variant property of wavelet coefficient, two level wavelet transform is performed. In order too reduce one-pixel shift on low band signal, S$_4$ band is interpolated by inserting average value. Secondly, one level wavelet transform is applied to the interpolated S$_4$ band. To estimate initial motion vector, block matching algorithm is applied to low band signal S$_{8}$. Multiresolution motion estimation is performed at the rest subbands in low level. According to the experimental results, proposed method showed 1-2dB improvement of PSNR performance at the same bit rate as well as subjective quality compared with the conventional multiresolution motion estimation(MRME) methods and full-search block matching in wavelet domain.
