In the deterministic optimization of a structural system, objective function, design constraints and design variables, are treated in a nonstatistical fashion. However, such deterministic engineering optimization tends to promote the structural system with lest reliability redundancy than obtained with conventional design procedures using the factor of safety. Consequently, deterministic optimized structures will usually have higher failure probabilities than unoptimized structures. Therefore, a balance must be developed between the satisfactions of the design requirements and the objectives of reducing manufacturing cost. This paper proposes the reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) technique, which enables the optimum design that considers confidence level for the vibration characteristics of structural system. Response surface method (RSM) is utilized to approximate the performance functions describing the system characteristics in the RBDO procedure. The proposed optimization technique is applied to the pillar section design considering natural frequencies of a vehicle structure.
This paper is the result of sensitivity analysis of derailment with respect to the selected suspension elements for the rail vehicle. Derailment phenominon has been explained by the derailment quotient. Thus, the sensitivity of derailment is suggested by a response surface model(RSM) which is a functional relationship between derailment quotient and characteristics of suspension elements. To summarize generation of RSM, we can introduce the procedure of sensitivity analysis as follows. First, to form a RSM, a experiment is performed by a dynamic analysis code, VAMPIRE according to a kind of the design of experiments(DOE). Second, RSM is constructed to a 1$\^$st/ order polynomial and then main effect fators are screened through the stepwise regression. Finally, we can see the sensitivity level through the RSM which only consists of the main effect factors and is expressed by the liner, interaction and quadratic effect terms.
The Primary object of this study is to predict rigid carbody's vertical and pitch acceleration and/or displacement frequency response to vertical sinusoidal rail surface irregularities for any specified point of the carbody, and to verify the predictions by means of experiments. The developed computer program also calculates vertical and pith transmissibilities and acceleration spectra. This model can be used for first order analysis of ride behabior. it's main advantage is its simplicity and ease of use. This model can be used for first order analysis of ride quality behabior. It's main advantage is its simplicity and ease of use. The model was designed with 6 degreed of freedom. Equations of motion were derived by Lagrangian method. This calculation was applied to the vertical dynamic analysis in order to pursue a possible improvement of the dynamic performance of co-co locomotive, and results were very useful.
While job stress evaluations are reported in the recent surveys upon the nuclear power plants(NPPs), any significant advance in the types of questionnaires is not currently found. There are limitations to their usefulness as analytic tools for the management of safety resources in NPPs. Data mining(DM) has emerged as one of the key features for data computing and analysis to conduct a survey analysis. There are still limitations to its capability such as dimensionality associated with many survey questions and quality of information. Even though some survey methods may have significant advantages, often these methods do not provide enough evidence of causal relationships and the statistical inferences among a large number of input factors and responses. In order to address these limitations on the data computing and analysis capabilities, we propose an advanced procedure of survey analysis incorporating the DM method into a statistical analysis. The DM method can reduce dimensionality of risk factors, but DM method may not discuss the robustness of solutions, either by considering data preprocesses for outliers and missing values, or by considering uncontrollable noise factors. We propose three steps to address these limitations. The first step shows data mining with response surface method(RSM), to deal with specific situations by creating a new method called response surface data mining(RSDM). The second step follows the RSDM with detailed statistical relationships between the risk factors and the response of interest, and shows the demonstration the proposed RSDM can effectively find significant physical, psycho-social, and environmental risk factors by reducing the dimensionality with the process providing detailed statistical inferences. The final step suggest a robust stress management system which effectively manage job stress of the workers in NPPs as a part of a safety resource management using the surrogate variable concept.
Robust design (RD) has emerged as a key feature in process design and development for more than twenty years. Many researchers and industrial engineers around the world have invested their intensive efforts to develop and apply RD in many fields in order to improve quality of output products. However, there is also room for improvement. The primary objective of this research is to determine "robust formulation" of a medicine by checking its gelation index. In order to achieve this target, based on the nature of problem, at first, a customized experimental format is designed for obtaining data. Second, time-depended responses based models are developed by the proposed inverse problem (IP) methodology. Third, an RD model based on mean square error (MSE) concept is introduced for time-depended responses. Finally, the proposed approach is illustrated by a case study while comparing obtained results to the response surface methodology (RSM) approach.
A seismic reliability analysis of the jacket-type support structure for an offshore wind turbine was performed. When defining the limit state function using the dynamic response of the support structure, numerous dynamic calculations should be performedin an approach like the FORM (first-order reliability method). This causes a substantial increase in the analysis cost. Therefore, in this paper, a new reliability analysis approach using the static response is used. The dynamic effect of the response is considered by introducing a new parameter called the peak response factor (PRF). The probability distribution of the PRF could be estimated using the peak value of the dynamic response. The probability distribution of the PRF was obtained for a set of ground motions. A numerical example is considered to compare the proposed approach with the conventional static-response-based approach.

Slopes stabilised with piles are seldom analysed considering uncertainties in the parameters of the pile-slope system. Reliability analysis of the pile-slope system quantifies the degree of uncertainties and evaluates the safety of the system. In the present study, the reliability analysis of a slope stabilised with piles is performed using the first-order reliability method (FORM) based on Hasofer-Lind approach. The implicit performance function associated with the factor of safety (FS) of the slope is approximated using the response surface method. The analyses are carried out considering the design matrices formulated based on both the 2k factorial design augmented with a centre run (2k fact-centred design) and face-centered cube design (FCD). The finite element method is used as the deterministic model to compute the FS of the pile-slope system. Results are compared with the results of the Monte Carlo simulation. It is observed that the optimum location of the row of piles is at the middle of the slope to achieve the maximum FS. The results show that the reliability of the system is not uniform for different pile configurations, even if the system deterministically satisfies the target factor of safety (FSt) criterion. The FSt should be selected judiciously as it is observed that the reliability of the system changes drastically with the FSt level. The results of the 2k fact-centred design and FCD are in good agreement with each other. The procedure of the FCD is computationally costly and hence the use of 2k fact-centred design is recommended, provided the response of the system is sufficiently linear over the factorial space.
The present work is an attempt to develop a simple and accurate finite element formulation for the assessment of thermal shock/thermally induced vibrations in pretwisted and tapered functionally graded material thin (FGM) blades obtained from Voigt and local representative volume elements (LRVE) homogenization models, based on neutral surface approach. The neutral surface of the FGM blade does not coincide with its mid-surface. A finite element model (FEM) is developed using first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and the FGM turbine blade is modelled according to the shallow shell theory. The top and the bottom layers of the FGM blade are made of pure ceramic and pure metal, respectively and temperature-dependent material properties are functionally graded in the thickness direction, the position of the neutral surface also depends on the temperature. The material properties are estimated according to two different homogenization models viz., Voigt or LRVE. The top layer of the FGM blade is subjected to high temperature and the bottom surface is either thermally insulated or kept at room temperature. The solution of the nonlinear profile of the temperature in the thickness direction is obtained from the Fourier law of heat conduction in the unsteady state. The results obtained from the present FEM are compared with the benchmark examples. Next, the effect of angle of twist, intensity of thermal shock, variable chord and span and volume fraction index on the transient response due to thermal shock obtained from the two homogenization models viz., Voigt and LRVE scheme is investigated. It is shown that there can be a significant difference in the transient response calculated by the two homogenization models for a particular set of material and geometric parameters.

Since correlation filter appeared in the field of object tracking, it plays an increasingly vital role due to its excellent performance. Although many sophisticated trackers have been successfully applied to track the object accurately, very few of them attaches importance to the scale and rotation estimation. In order to address the above limitation, we propose a novel method combined with Fourier-Mellin transform and confidence evaluation strategy for robust object tracking. In the first place, we construct a correlation filter to locate the target object precisely. Then, a log-polar technique is used in the Fourier-Mellin transform to cope with the rotation and scale changes. In order to achieve subpixel accuracy, we come up with an efficient surface fitting mechanism to obtain the optimal calculation result. In addition, we introduce a confidence evaluation strategy modeled on the output response, which can decrease the impact of image noise and perform as a criterion to evaluate the target model stability. Experimental experiments on OTB100 demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves superior capability in success plots and precision plots of OPE, which is 10.8% points and 8.6% points than those of KCF. Besides, our method performs favorably against the others in terms of SRE and TRE validation schemes, which shows the superiority of our proposed algorithm in scale and rotation evaluation.
