  • In this paper we analyzed bulging condition which affect the quality of continuous casting steel by using the numerical analytic method. First solidification analyses are performed for each cooling zones. Solidification analysis are carried out by one-dimensuional finite difference method. The bulging deformation of cast slab has been calculated with a two-dimensional elasto-plastic and creep finite element model. The adequacy of the model has been checked against the experimental results. From this study the effects of the process variables such as casting speed cooling condition roll pitch are examined. The results from these analyses would be able to apply to the design of continuous casting process.

  • This paper investigates the ground vibration induced by high-speed trains moving on multi-span continuous bridges. The dynamic impact factor of multi-span continuous bridges under trainloads was first determined in the parametric study, which shows that the dynamic impact factor will be large when the first bridge vertical natural frequency is equal to the trainload dominant frequencies, nV/D, where n is a positive integer, V is the train speed, and D is the train carriage interval. In addition, more continuous spans will produce smaller dynamic impact factors at this resonance condition. Based on the results of three-dimensional finite element analyses using the soil-structure interaction for realistic high-speed railway bridges, we suggest that the bridge span be set at 1.4 to 1.5 times the carriage interval for simply supported bridges. If not, the use of four or more-than-four-span continuous bridges is suggested to reduce the train-induced vibration. This study also indicates that the vibration in the train is major generated from the rail irregularities and that from the bridge deformation is not dominant.

  • Under longitudinal loading continuous fiber reinforced metal matrix composite(MMC) have interpreted an outstanding performance. However, the applicability of continuous fiber reinforced MMCs is somewhat limited due to their relatively poor transverse properties. Therefore, the transverse properties of MMCs are significantly influenced by the properties of the fiber/matrix interface. In this study, elastic-plastic behavior of transversely loaded unidirectional fiber reinforced metal matrix composites investigated by using elastic-plastic finite element analysis. Different fiber placement(square and hexagon) and fiber volume fractions were studied numerically. The interface was treated as three thin layer (with different properties) with a finite thickness between the fiber and the matrix. The analyses were based on a two-dimensional generalized plane strain model of a cross-section of an unidirectional composite by the ANSYS finite element analysis code.

  • This paper is concerned with investigating the asymptotic behavior of end effects for a generalized heat conduction problem with an added dissipation term defined on a three-dimensional semi-infinite cylinder. With homogeneous Dirichlet conditions on the lateral surface of the cylinder it is shown that solutions either grow exponentially or decay exponentially in the distance from the finite end of the cylinder. In particular, to render decay estimate explicit, we pattern after the analysis of Payne and Song [13, 15]. The continuous dependence effect of perturbing the equations parameters is also investigated.

  • For the analysis of leveling process by the 3-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element method, a finite element analysis program modeling large deformation of shell has been developed. This program fur analyzing large deformation of sheet during leveling includes spring-back analysis as well as efficient contact treatment between sheet and rolls of leveler. This is verified by the simple leveling experiment with 5 rolls at laboratory. Besides the leveling examples, problems within the category of large strain and rotation, such as 3-dimensional roll-up and gutter occurrence at continuous bending-unbending process are also tested for verification of the program. The residual curvatures of strip predicted by finite element analysis are within 20% error range of the experiment. The formation and direction of anticlastic curvature or gutter during bending-unbending under tension is predicted and this agrees with the experimental results.

  • We study the long-term dynamics for a family of incompressible three-dimensional Leray-α-like models that employ the spectral fractional Laplacian operators. This family of equations interpolates between incompressible hyperviscous Navier-Stokes equations and the Leray-α model when varying two nonnegative parameters 𝜃1 and 𝜃2. We prove the existence of a finite-dimensional global attractor for the continuous semigroup associated to these models. We also show that an operator which projects the weak solution of Leray-α-like models into a finite-dimensional space is determining if it annihilates the difference of two "nearby" weak solutions asymptotically, and if it satisfies an approximation inequality.

  • In this paper we study a nudging continuous data assimilation algorithm for the three-dimensional Leray-α model, where measurement errors are represented by stochastic noise. First, we show that the stochastic data assimilation equations are well-posed. Then we provide explicit conditions on the observation density (resolution) and the relaxation (nudging) parameter which guarantee explicit asymptotic bounds, as the time tends to infinity, on the error between the approximate solution and the actual solution which is corresponding to these measurements, in terms of the variance of the noise in the measurements.

  • Nonlinear behavior of two-span, continuous composite steel-concrete girders strengthened with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) bonded to the top of concrete slab over the negative moment region was evaluated using a non-linear Finite Element (FE) model in this paper. A three-dimensional FE model of continuous composite girder using commercial software ABAQUS simulated and validated with experimental results. The interfacial regions of the composite girder components were modeled using suitable interface elements. Validation of the proposed numerical model with experimental data confirmed the applicability of this model to predict the loading history, strain level for the different components and concrete-steel relative slip. The FE model captured the different modes of failure for the continuous composite girder either in the concrete slab or at the interfacial region between CFRP sheet and concrete slab. Through a parametric study, the thickness of CFRP sheet and shear connection required to develop full capacity of the continuous composite girder at negative moment zone have been investigated. The FE results showed that the proper thickness of CFRP sheet at negative moment region is a function of the adhesive strength and the positive moment capacity of the composite section. The shear connection required at the negative moment zone depends on CFRP sheet's tensile stress level at ultimate load.

  • A finite element-based, integrated process model is presented for a three dimensional, coupled analysis of the thermo-mechanical behavior of the strip and work roll in the continuous hot strip rolling. The validity of the proposed model is examined through comparison with measurements. The effect of Edge-Heater on the finishing delivery temperatures is examined by using the present model. The models capability of revealing the effect of diverse process parameters is demonstrated through a series of process simulation.

  • Low-velocity impact responses of composite laminates are investigated using the finite element method based on various theories. In two-dimensional nonlinear analysis, a displacement field considering higher order shear deformation and large deflection of the laminate is assumed and a finite element formulation is developed using a C$^{o}$-continuous 9-node plate element. Also, three-dimensional linear analysis based on the infinitesimal strain-displacement assumptions is performed using 8-node brick elements with incompatible modes. A modified Hertzian contact law is incorporated into the finite element program to evaluate the impact force. In the time integration, the Newmark constant acceleration algorithm is used in conjuction with successive iterations within each time step. Numerical results from static analysis as well as the impact response analysis are presented including impact force histories, deflections, strains in the laminate. Impact responses according to two typical low-velocity impact conditions are compared each other.
