  • Cubic boron nitride(c-BN) films were deposited on tungsten carbide insert tool by microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition(MPECVD) from a gas mixture of triethyl borate$(B(C_2H_5O)_3)$, ammonia $(NH_3)$, hydrogen$(H_2)$ and argon(Ar). The qualities of deposited thin film were investigated by x-ray diffrac-tion(XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM) and micro Raman spectroscope. The surface morphologies of the synthesised BN as well as crystallinity appear to be highly dependent on the flow rate of $B(C_2H_5O)_3$ and $(NH_3)$ gases. The deposited film had more crystallized phases with 5 scem of $B(C_2H_5O)_3$ and $(NH_3)$ gases than with 2 sccm, and the phase was identified as c-BN by micro Raman spectroscope and XRD. The adhesion strength were also increased with increasing flow rates of $B(C_2H_5O)_3$ and $(NH_3)$ gases.

  • A one-step route was developed to fabricate $Cu(In,Ga)Se_2$ (CIGS) thin films by radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering from a single quaternary $CuIn_{0.75}Ga_{0.25}Se_2$ target. The effects of the substrate temperatures on the structural and electrical properties of the CIGS layers were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and Hall effect measurements. All the deposited films showed a preferential orientation along the (112) direction. The films deposited at $300^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$ revealed that chalcopyrite main (112) peak and weak prominent peaks of (220)/(204) and (312)/(116), indicating polycrystalline structures. The element ratio of the deposited film at $300^{\circ}C$ were almost the same as the near-optimum value. The carrier concentration of the films decreased with increasing substrate temperatures.

  • Ferroelectric ceramics are broadly used for various industrial applications. In this research, the lead-free ferroelectric ceramics of $(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})NbO_3$ was fabricated by using the solid state synthesis. The $(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})NbO_3$ pellets were sintered at 1200, 1150 and $1100^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours in air atmosphere. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) characterization of the sintered KNN ceramics revealed surface morphology and grain size. And we used the X-ray diffraction (XRD) for measuring the sample crystal phase. Temperature dependence of the dielectric constant was measured by using an LCR meter. The sintered at $1150^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours sample has a highest dielectric constant 6011 at Curie temperature ($T_C$) and dense structure with $2.33{\mu}m$ grain size.

  • $SnO_{2}$-doped anatase type $TiO_{2}$ powder was prepared by the polymerization complex route from tin(IV) bis (acetylacetonate) dichloride, titanium diisopropoxide bis (acetylacetonate) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a complexing agent. The structural changes of reaction mixture were monitored by fourier transform infarared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The microstructure and morphology of gel powder were studied by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The photocatalytic activity of these powders with the anatase structure was investigated by using indigo carmine solution.

  • Martensitic stainless steel STS 431 has been nitrided by active screen ion nitriding under the various temperature and time. The thickness of diffusion layer, case depth, hardness and composition phases were investigated using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), micro-Vickers hardness tester, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and glow discharge spectroscopy (GDS). It was observed that the thickness of diffusion layer depends strongly on the treatment temperature and time. A sample, which was nitrided at $450^{\circ}C$ for 8hours, was a maximum hardness of Hv0.01 1558 and nitride layer of $70{\mu}m$. As shown in XRD patterns, $\varepsilon(Fe_{2-3}N)$ and expanded martensite (${\alpha}_N$) phases which was saturated with nitrogen solid solution were in the nitrided layer treated at $450^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. Composition phases of $\varepsilon$ $(Fe_{2-3}N)$ and ${\gamma}'$ ($Fe_4N$) were observed after active screen nitriding at $450^{\circ}C$ for 8 hours.

  • We have investigated the sensing properties of ethanol gas sensor with pure ZnO and Ga-doped ZnO nanowires on Au coated (0001) sapphire substrates grown by hot walled pulsed laser deposition. Randomly aligned ZnO nanowires arrays were grown on a Au-electrode patterned under ambient conditions. ZnO nanowires have various sizes and shapes with a different substrate position inside a furnace. The average of length and diameter of the ZnO nanowires were $8\;{\mu}m$ and 100 nm respectively, and confirmed by field emission scanning electron microscopy. Sensitivity chanege characterization of the gas sensor was found that measured sensitivities of the ethanol gas sensors were 83.3% and 68.3% at $300^{\circ}C$ respectively.

  • Recently, Platypus koryoensis has been reported as a major pest of oak trees in Korea which can introduce the pathogenic fungus(Raffaelea sp.) by making galleries into the heartwood of the tree. As the beetle has developed its effective drilling mouthpart enough to make tunnels, we have analyzed the fine structural aspects of the mouthpart using the field emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM) to reveal its mechano-dynamic characteristics. The mouthparts of this ambrosia beetle which consist of a labrum, a pair of mandibles, a pair of maxillae and the labium exhibit typical morphology of mycophagous coleopteran beetles and have those characteristics of chewing mouthparts that can excavate galleries in the hardwood. Both of maxillary and labial palpi have the functions of direct the food to the mouth and hold it while the mandibles chew the food. The distal ends of these palpi are flattened and have shovel-like setae. Females have larger maxillary palpi and a larger gular region than males in general.

  • Li-incorporated ZnO thin films were deposited by using ultrasonic-assisted spray pyrolysis deposition (SPD) system. To investigate the effect of Li-incorporation on the performance of ZnO thin films, the structural, electrical, and optical properites of the ZnO thin films were analyzed by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emssion scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Hall effect measurement, and UV-Vis spectrophotometry with variation of the Li concentraion in the ZnO sources. Without incorporation of Li element, the ZnO surface showed large spiral domains. As the Li content increases, the size of spiral domains decreased gradually, and finally formed mixed small grain and one-dimensional nanorod-like structures on the surface. This morphological evolution was explained based on an anti-surfactant effect of Li atoms on the ZnO growth surface. In addition, the Li-incorporation changed the optical and electrical properties of the ZnO thin films by modifying the crystalline defect structures by doping effects.

  • A simple method to deposit carbon nanotube films uniformly on large area substrates using an arc discharge method is reported in this paper. The arc discharge method was modified to deposit carbon nanotube films in situ on the substrates. The substrates were scanned several times over the arcing point for a uniform film thickness. Deposition was carried out under variable dc bias conditions at 600 torr of $H_2$ gas. The thickness uniformity of the single-wall carbon nanotube films as characterized by a four-point probe was within 30% deviation. The morphology and crystal quality of the single-wall carbon nanotube film were also characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy.

  • $Fe_2O_3/TiO_2$ nanocomposite were successfully synthesized by co-precipitation method using $Fe(NO_3)_3{\cdot}9H_2O$ and $Ti(SO_4)_2$ as raw materials. Structural and textural features of the mixed oxide samples were characterized by X-ray diffractometer, field emission scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray. The effects of initial concentration of oxytetracycline (OTC), different competitive ions and organics on the photocatalytic degradation rate of OTC by the $Fe_2O_3/TiO_2$ nanocomposite were analyzed under UV and visible light irradiation. The results indicate that the optimized initial concentration of OTC was 50 mg/L to achieve the best photocatalytic efficiency. $Cu^{2+}$, $NH_4{^+}$, $C_3H_8O$ and EDTA in the aqueous suspension were found to suppress the degradation rate of OTC, whereas the effect of $NO_3{^-}$ and $H_2C_2O_4$ can be ignored.
