  • This study investigated the relationships between the child-rearing involvement of fathers and their children's social-emotional competence. The subjects were 257 kindergarten children and their fathers. Data on the children's social and emotional competence were provided by their mothers, kindergarten teachers and five trained observers. The observers tested the social-emotional problem solving ability of the children. The data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe post test, and Pearson's correlations. Results showed child rearing involvement differences between fathers based on (1) age and educational level of fathers, and (2) sex of child. Father's child-rearing involvement and child's social-emotional competence were correlated, especially in children whose fathers participated positively in child-rearing and had effective cognitive strategies for solving social and emotional problems.

Data are collected from 323 married men with the oldest child under 12 years old, using the structured questionnaire survey method. The major findings of the study are as follows: First, the fathering activities are composed of four factors, which are affective involvement, caretaking, social involvement and discipling. The respondents tend to exhibit the level of fathering activities higher than middle point. Second, using cluster analysis, three types of fathers are categorized: The affective type fathers scored significantly high on dimensions of affective involvement. Whereas the engaged fathers scored the highest on all domains of fathering, the disengaged fathers demonstrated significantly limited involvement. Third, the characteristics which are associated with fathering activities patterns are father's age, job type, work hour, frequency of meetings after work hour, job satisfaction and child rearing attitude. The results of this study suggest several implications to develop parent education program for fathers and their children.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the main and interaction effects of fathers' parenting and their play participation on emotional regulation of preschoolers. The participants of this study consisted of 269 preschoolers (M: 61.4 months, SD: 15.3) located in Seoul and Gyeong-gi province. The results of regression analysis revealed that; 1) Father's parenting (such as rational instruction, friendly attitude) positively predicted child's emotion regulations. 2) The interaction effects of fathers' parenting (such as parenting participation, reaction, rational instruction, friendly attitude) with their constructive play participation predicted children's emotion regulations. Namely, fathers with higher constructive play participation showed higher emotion regulations of preschoolers under father's parenting participation, reaction, rational instruction and friendly attitude. 3) The interaction effects between fathers' functional play participation and father's parenting participation predicted children's emotion regulations. Findings indicate that fathers play a role in improving children's emotion regulation by parenting. Moreover, its effects appeared more apparently when fathers participated with constructive and functional play methods. In conclusion, it is suggested that fathering and the level of play involvement may be key variables for developing young children's emotion regulation.

  • This study analyzed the trend of researches regarding parenting involvement of fathers with early childhood children in terms of research period, research content and research method. Forty master's thesis and doctoral dissertation and 22 articles were selected for final analysis. Collected data were analyzed using frequency and percentage ratio. The results of this study showed that research on the parenting involvement of fathers has been rapidly increased since 2005. From the perspective of research content, studies dealing with parenting involvement of fathers as an independent variable focused on early children and social and emotional variables. Most of studies dealing with parenting involvement of fathers as an dependent variable consistently dealt with demographic variables. From the perspective of research method, most researches were quantitative and non-experimental. No research was done using qualitative method and all researches except one were done using non-experimental method. The number of participants in most researches were over 100 and less than 400. Most researches used participants from one particular district. Research instruments validated in Korea were used in most researches. These results were discussed with suggestions for further study.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide diverse points of view to understand the low fertility issue of Korean society. For this phenomenological qualitative study, in-depth interviews were conducted with 14 married couples(28 persons) all raising three children. Participants were asked about overall family and work life, child care role performance, thoughts about child rearing, and their sociocultural context. Interview data were explored based on 6 analyzing steps offered by S, J, Talyor and R. Bogdan(1984). Most participants of this study were formed positive perceptions about having three children. Parents' positive perception was closely related with their attitude of not worrying too much about their children's future as well as child caring contexts around them. Parents' perception about having three children was also linked with their child care role construction process. In detail, parents with more positive perceptions tended to increase their level of child care involvement. This was particularly true for fathers. Mother and father's job situation emerged as an important factor to shape their child care involvement. In addition, child care attitude of people around them explained father's child care involvement. Applying these qualitative results, we first expect to provide detailed ideas about lives with three children in Korea. Second, based on our study findings, a more realistic and helpful policy to help the low fertility problem could be developed. Lastly, we also hope to provide helpful phenomenological qualitative research about low fertility issues of Korea.

  • This study investigated how latent groups depend on the longitudinal trajectories observed in fathers' involvement in parenting over a five year period, and the study also determined differences in children's behavioral problems and mother's parenting stress, marital satisfaction, and depression among these groups. By utilizing 1,316 sets of data from 1st to 5th Panel Survey of PSKC beginning in 2008, we examined the patterns of the latent groups and the differences among them. The results showed that, first, a changing pattern of fathers' involvement in parenting is classified into four groups: a low-stable group, a decreasing group. a middle-high changeable group, and a highest changeable group. According to the results of the latent groups, the fathers' involvement in parenting commonly started to decrease at the children's age of 4 years old. Second, problematic behaviors of children appeared more from the fathers in the decreasing group. Third, parenting stress, marital conflict, and depression were more often found in the low-stable group that in the decreasing group. the middle-high changeable group and the highest changeable group (in that order), while marital satisfaction showed a completely opposite pattern. Based on these results, political intervention and the future direction of research for fathers' involvement in parenting are needed in order to increase better behaviors of their children as well as the psychological well-being of their mothers.

Four factors of adolescent's delinquency derived by factor analysis : F. 1 'general position delinquency' F. 2 'school-norm delinquency' F3. 'personal delinquency' : F.4 'sexual delinquency'. 2. There were partially significant correlations between the degree of adolescent's delinquency and information search and fashion involvement. There were significant relationships between degree of delinquency and degree of clothing purchasing frequency. companion while shopping and source of clothing expenses. 3. In the case of male students fashion involvement and sexual delinquency had a direct effect on information search(R2 =.278) General position delinquency and allowance had a indirect effect on information search through Father's level of education had a direct effect on allowance. the present findings provide that in general the more allowance students received the higher the general position delinquency for both males and females, The higher the general position delinquency the higher the degree of fashion involvement and information search. Therefore it can be concluded that relatively mild delinquency acts such as drinking. smoking and going to discothque have more influence on fashion involvement and information search that serious delinquency acts such as violence and robbery.
