  • Since textbooks for elementary school mathematics in accordance with the seventh curriculum are 'Class I' textbooks, which are used as one and only one textbooks throughout the country, the following aspects have been considered: In the legal aspect, the contents including the curriculum for mathematics asked of the Writing Committee by the Ministry of Education were reflected; in the aspect of theory of mathematics education, the textbooks are written in a way appropriate to theory of mathematics education; and in the aspect of application of reality, the textbooks are written to help improving mathematics education in classrooms. Therefore, the main frame of writing the textbooks is to make students feel proud enough to say "I have done mathematics", through helping students rationally solve problems surrounding them by themselves with their experiences and activities. In the above viewpoint the following sentence is reflected upon: "Hundred explanations are not equal to one manipulation activity."

  • The purpose of this study was to examine how the Lakatos method works in the elementary teacher education program. Elementary preservice teachers were given a task in which they examined the Pick's theorem. The finding revealed that Lakatos method was usable in the elementary teacher education. They produced initial conjecture and found counterexamples, and finally made improved conjectures. These experience encourage them to change their belief of teaching and learning mathematics and to find alternative ways of teaching mathematics.

  • The purpose of the study is to examine the effect of debate and discussion instruction in mathematics class on mathematics study achievements and attitudes in elementary school. To conduct the research, two classes were verified as the homogeneous groups by a preliminary examination on the fourth grade of J elementary school. After mathematics class, the subjects were conducted the same mathematics study achievement and attitude tests in two groups and were analyzed with descriptive statistics, independent t-test, t-test. Accordingly, debate and discussion instruction in mathematics class is more effective than regular lecture method instruction. debate and discussion instruction in mathematics classes are believed students will participate in the question and understand the mathematical principles and concepts themselves through action to solve the problem and influenced I have a positive attitude towards mathematics.

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze the textbook contents about the natural number concepts in the Korean National Elementary Mathematics Curriculum. Understanding a concept of natural number is crucial in school mathematics curriculum planning, since elementary students start their basic learning with natural number system. The concepts of natural number have various meaning from the perspectives of pedagogical research, and the philosophy of mathematics. The natural number concepts in the elementary math curriculum consist of four aspects; counting numbers, cardinal numbers, ordinal numbers, and measuring numbers. Two research questions are addressed; (1) How are the natural number concepts focusing on counting, cardinal, ordinal, measuring numbers are covered in the national math curriculum? ; (2) What suggestions can be made to enhance the teaching and learning about the natural number concepts? Findings reveal that (1) the national mathematics curriculum properly reflects four aspects of natural number concepts, as the curriculum covers 50% of the cardinal number system; (2) In the aspect of the counting number, we hope to add the meaning about 'one, two, three, ......, and so on' in the Korean Mathematics curriculum. In the ordinal number, we want to be rich the related meaning in a set. Further suggestions are made for future research to include them ensuing number in the curriculum.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the multicultural mathematics education factor shown in mathematics textbook. For this purpose, 2015 revised curriculum, mathematics textbook and teacher's guide book of first and second grade were analyzed using framework for multicultural mathematics education factor. The results of this study revealed that the general guideline of the national curriculum included 'culture identity', 'diversity of knowledge' and 'social problem solving' but the curriculum of mathematics excluded 'culture identity'. Nevertheless, mathematics textbook showed various multicultural mathematics education factor except 'social problem solving'. But there are several kinds of problem. Fist, application level of multicultural mathematics education factor was mostly low. Second, history of mathematics and culture aspects were Europocentric. Thirds, characters in mathematics text book were excessively standard. there weren't other ethnicity, the disabled, multicultural students. On the basis of these results, this paper includes several implications for the future multicultural mathematics education in elementary school.

  • The focus of the present study is to seek the ways of using popular culture for teaching mathematics. Thus, this study theoretically investigated concepts of popular culture and the meanings of using popular culture for mathematics teaching and learning. And the current study analyzed both the influence of popular culture of mathematics learning and how mathematics is represented through popular culture. Finally, this study suggested teaching models using popular culture and implications for further research in mathematics education about popular culture.

  • This study was to analyze motivations in the mathematics lessons from the perspectives of preservice elementary school teachers. The participants were three groups of 62 preservice elementary teachers who were sophomore or junior students in Seoul city in Korea. Two groups of the students were enrolled at teaching and learning mathematics courses, whereas one group of students were at mathematics problem solving course. They were randomly assigned to elementary schools for their student teaching. They were required to observe mathematics lessons focusing on motivations during their participating at the two-week student teaching period. The preservice teachers were asked to observe and submit the reports of the observation in the mathematics lesson. The researcher suggested a guideline of observation and analyzed the reports according to the categories those were suggested in the guideline. The results of the analysis on the reports are summarized as follows. First, the preservice elementary school teachers considered the purpose of motivations as attracting students' interest. Second, the major ratio of motivations were attracting students' attention in the mathematics lessons. Third, the duration average time was 5 minutes 50 seconds and only limited materials for the motivations. At last, most mathematics lessons need to stimulate students' curiosity that fits to the objectives of the lessons. The researcher suggests that we need to develop various motivations in mathematics lessons with which teachers should subtlely connected to the objectives of the lessons.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a mathematics self-efficacy test tool for elementary school students based on the sub-factors of mathematical self-efficacy derived from current studies. In this study, I verified the validity and reliability of the test tool by statistically evaluating the results of applying the test tool to the 3rd-6th grade students. In this study, Principal Component Analysis was performed on the tool for measuring the self efficacy of mathematics for elementary school students. For the validity test, the mathematics anxiety status of the participants was measured. The mathematics anxiety who were known to have a negative correlation with the mathematical self efficacy. The mathematics self efficacy tool developed in this study consists of 16 items with three subcategories: master experience, social persuasions, and emotional and physiological state. The mathematical self efficacy test tool developed in this study is expected to provide grounds for diagnosing the mathematics self-efficacy status of elementary school students and looking for ways to improve it.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a teaching/learning model for the mathematical enculturation of elementary and secondary school students. It is clear that the development of teaching and learning in the classroom is essential for the realization of global innovations in mathematics education. Research questions for this purpose are as follow: (1) What can be learned from literatures reviews of the socio-cultural perspective on mathematics education, and of ethnomathematics as a mathematics intrinsic to cultural activities? (2) What is the direction of teaching and learning from the perspective of mathematical enculturation? (3) What is the teaching /learning model for mathematical enculturation? (4) What is the instructional exemplification based on the developed model? This study promotes the establishment of mathematics education theory from the review of literatures on the socio-cultural perspective, the development of a teaching/learning model, and the instructional exemplification based on the developed model.
