  • LRV(Light Rail Vehicle) is one of the most useful way for urban transit. HDPIC has designed and manufactured the LRV train set for Manila Line 1 expansion. The LRV is composed of two carbody sections which are coupled by a articulated bogie. The articulated bogie and two motorized bogies have slewing rings in order to improve the curving performance and ride quality. Carbody structures are mainly made of low-carbon stainless steel (STS301L), and the carbody bolsters and draft sills are made of rolled steel for welded structures. The authority's specifications specified the design load conditions and weight limits. Design load conditions are vertical load, compressive load and diagonal jacking, and the maximum axle load is 10.7 ton. In order to meet those requirements, the stiffness and strength of carbody structure were predicted using finite element analysis during design stage. The half or full structure is modeled and analyzed with design load conditions, and critical areas are analysed in detail using sub-modeling method. The strength and strength of carbody structure was also verified by the load test. The analysis and test results show a good agreement.

  • The equivalent vehicle load factors which can consider the concentrated wheel load effect in slab design of parking garage structure are proposed. Based on the standard vehicle with total weight of 2.4 ton which is designed through the investigation of small to medium vehicle produced in Korea and the review of numerous foreign design codes for parking garage structure, the effects of moving vehicle loads on slab are analyzed using the finite element method. Besides. the relationships between the equivalent load factors and the sectional dimensions are established by regression analysis. The calculation of design forces can be easily accomplished without taking sophisticated numerical analysis for the moving vehicle load as the results obtained to the distributed load are multiplied by the proposed load factors in practice.

  • This study examined the behavior of the ground by comparing the methods using the results of the Terzaghi formula and the ground investigation data and method considering the dilatancy effect for a circular tunnel using the finite element method. In the case of the Terzaghi formula, the tunnel load can be overestimated and cause overdesign. The method using the results of the ground investigation data cannot be applied when a reasonable coefficient of earth pressure is not determined. This is because it behaves completely differently from the actual behavior, and unexpected problems can occur. In the case of the method considering the dilatancy effect, however, both the strength enhancement effect can be considered through the dilatancy angle and relative density. Therefore, the tunnel load was calculated most reasonably using the method considering dilatancy. Finite element analysis using the geotechnical survey results showed that the tensile stress acts at the top of the tunnel when the upper soil of the tunnel is shallow. On the other hand, additional verification is necessary, such as a comparison with the field measurement results. Through additional research, if normalized, the tunnel load can be calculated reasonably at the time of tunnel design, and safe and economical design is possible.

  • This study Masonry Buildings in rural areas, due to the lateral load resistance for seismic reinforcement method is proposed. Some of the proposed methods for reinforcement directly through finite element analysis to evaluate the change in frequency. The results for the following: This paper has the object of investigating natural frequencies of opening thick plates on Pasternak foundation by means of finite element method and providing Kinematic design data for mat of building structures. In this paper, vibration analysis of rectangular opening thick plate is done by use of Serendipity finite element with 8 nodes by considering shearing strain of plate. It is shown that natrural frequencies depend on not only Winkler foundation parameter but also shear foundation parameter, opening position.

  • The stress intensity factors have been widely used in numerical studies of crack growth direction. However in many cases, omissive terms of the series expansion are quantitatively significant, so we consider the computation of such terms. For this purpose, we used the finite element method with isometric quadratic quarter-point elements. For examples, infinite square plate with a slant crack subjected to a uniaxial load is analyzed. The numerical analysis were performed for the wide range of crack tip element lengths and inclined angles. The numerical results obtained are compared with the theoretical solutions. Also they were accurate and efficient.

  • The brake force of drum brakes for commercial vehicles is applied by a s-cam. First of all the influence of the s-cam load angles and elastic modulus of the pad on the contact pressure distribution between pad and drum was checked by using 3 dimensional finite element model. In the second part, temperature and thermal stress analyses were carried out by an axisymmetric model with constant heat flux and pressure-proportional heat flux. In the case of temperature analysis the heat conduction from the interface to the pad and the drum was modeled using a thin soft film element, so artificial division of the generated heat flux between pad and drum is not necessary. The analysis was performed by ABAQUS/Standard code.

  • The purpose of this paper is to apply the boundary element method to predict the crack growth path. The quarter point element with traction singularity at the crack tip is applied to compact tension type specimens and two inclined slit problems under compression load. The maximum stress criterion which was originally derived for the crack initiation is extended to the analysis of the crack propagation. The predicted crack paths with 1/4 crack growth increment of initial crack length agree quite well with experimental results. It is found that the computed crack path of the boundary element analysis is not mainly affected by the crack increment length.
