  • Effective beam width models are commonly used to obtain the lateral stiffness of flat plate structures. In these models, an effective beam width is defined as the width when the flexural stiffness of the beam element equals the slab stiffness. In this present study, a method to obtain effective beam widths that considers the effects of connection geometry and slab cracking is analytically proposed. The rectangularity of the vertical member for the connection geometry and the combined effects of creep and shrinkage for the slab cracking are considered. The results from the proposed method are compared with experimental results from a test structure having nine slab-column connections.

  • The evaluation of habitability to building vibration is conducted by the values of natural frequency, amplitude displacement, damping ratio. These values can be obtained from test or analytical results. Data acquisition through test may be possible in existing building, however, to estimate the serviceability of the building, it is necessary to evaluate those values at the stage of design. The natural frequency is important and basic factor for the evaluation of the serviceability. Calculation method of the effective stiffness in RC slab is proposed. To prove the efficiency of the proposed method, sample results of the analysis and the test are compared. These results proved that the effective width proposed to calculate the effective stiffness is proper to evaluate the natural frequency.

  • It would be much effective that single column type pier is used in concrete slab bridges rather than gravity type pier is used. To determine the longitudinal bonging moment in concrete slab bridges supported by single column type piers, the concept of effective width is applied. By elastic plate theory cooperated with finite element method, the distribution of the longitudinal moment of the slab supported by single column type piers is studied. The main variables are span, width, and thickness of the slab and column section size. Then the analytical results obtained are summarized and analysed to evaluate the maximum longitudinal negative moment by simple beam analysis.

  • We calculate the facet reflectivity as a function of the waveguide width of buried channel waveguides using the angular spectrum method and the field profiles obtained by the effective index method, the variational method and the modified variational method, respectively and discuss the results. As the waveguide width increases, the facet reflectivity of buried channel waveguides approaches to that of slab waveguides. As the waveguide width decreases, the facet reflectivity of quasi-TE mode decreases from that of slab waveguides, while that of quasi-TE mode increases from that of slab waveguides. The variation of the facet reflectivity of quasi-TE mode as a function of waveguide width is much larger than that of quasi-TM mode. When the aspect ratio is one, the difference between the facet reflectivity of quasi-TE mode and that of quasi-TM mode using the variational method and the modified variational method is negligible, while the difference between the facet reflectivity of quasi-TE mode and that of quasi-TM mode using the effective index method is large. In the case of quasi-TE mode, the facet reflectivity using the angular spectrum method and the field profiles obtained by the modified variational method could be more accurate than that obtained by the effective method. In the case of quasi-TM mode, the facet reflectivities obtained by the various methods are almost the same.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose the stiffness reduction factor for flat plate slabs under lateral loads. Current design code (e.g., ACI 318-05) requires considering the effects of cracks for calculating slab stiffness under lateral loads. This study collected the test results of 20 interior slab-column connections, from which stiffness reduction in each test was estimated with respect to the ratio of applied moment to cracking moment ($M_a/M_{cr}$). Based on collected data, this study proposed equations for calculating stiffness reduction with respect to $M_a/M_{cr}$. To verify the proposed equations, this study conducted the experimental test of interior slab-column connections under quasi-static cyclic loading. From the test, load-deformation curve is compared to that obtained from effective beam width method with the proposed equation for the stiffness reduction. It is shown that the effective beam width method with the proposed equation for stiffness reduction predicts accurately the test results.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose frame analysis method for flat plate slabs having edge beam under lateral loads. Flat plate system is defined as the system only with slab of uniform thickness and column. However, the slab system generally incorporate edge beams at exterior connection in actual design. ACI 318 (2005) allows three methods for conducting flat plate system analysis subjected to lateral loads. There are the finite element method (FEM), the equivalent frame method (EFM), and the effective beam width method (EBWM). Among methods, the EBWM enables us to analyze practically by substituting the actual slab to beam element. In this model, the beam element has a thickness equal to that of the slab, and effective beam width equal to some fraction of the slab transverse width. However, the established EBWM was generally proposed for variables of geometry or stiffness reduction factor and seldom proposed for the effect of edge beams. This study verifies that, in the case of flat plate system having edge beams at exterior connections, the lateral stiffness is considerably larger than without edge beams. Therefore it need to analysis method for considered the effect of edge beams. In this study, an analysis model is proposed for the flat plate system having edge beams under lateral loads by considering the effect of edge beams. To verify the accuracy of proposed model, this study compared results of the proposed EBWM with results of FEM of flat plate systems having edge beams under lateral loads. Also, the proposed approach is compared with experimental results of former research.

  • The paper presents a model for analysing the shear-lag effect on the slab of twin-girder composite decks subjected to static actions, support settlements and concrete shrinkage, which are the main actions of interest in composite bridge design. The proposed model includes concrete creep behaviour and shear connection flexibility. The shear-lag in the slab is accounted for by means of a new warping function. The considered actions are then applied to a realistic bridge deck and their effects are discussed. The proposed method is utilised to determine the slab effective widths for three different width-length ratios of the deck. Finally, a comparison between the results obtained with the Eurocode EC4-2 and those obtained with the proposed model is performed.

  • To reasonably predict the behaviors for RC flat-plate structures, analysis model considering the flexural stiffness of slabs is required. FEMA 273 and ACI 318-99 refer to theoretical analysis models of two-way slab systems under lateral loading but the actual application method is not suggested. In this study, the modeling and application methods of the flat-plates using effective beam concept are suggested. The results of this study are as follows. 1) The effective beam width model suggested in this study is very useful to model flat-Plate structures subjected to seismic loading for three dimensional analysis 2) The result of analysis for idealized flat-plate example using the effective beam widths considering the effect of the slab crack is shown upper value for displacements. Whereas the model considering effective beam width coefficients only is shown upper value for unbalanced moments

  • Stiffness reduction factor of slab in flat-plate structure is proposed in comparison with UCB test result. Then analysis of structural system of flat-plate apartment buildings is carried out by using effective beam width method and finite element method. Effective beam width method overestimates the lateral stiffness of the system where columns are arranged atypically and overestimates the stiffness of slab-wall joint.
