  • In order to evaluate the day length sensitivity of soybean lines, Korean native and other varieties were planted in different dates from May 4 to July 13. With early plantings flowering was delayed and little differences of flowering time among lines were observed with the early plantings as compared with those of late plantings. The positive relationship between number of days to flowering from plantings on May 4 and July 13 was found and screening for the day length sensitivity is recommended to plant either on the beginning of Mayor mid-July in the middle part of Korean peninsular. Among the soybean lines tested several day neutral lines were observed.

  • Characteristics of leaf unfolding and flowering of 31 chestnut varieties cultivated in southern Korea was conducted to provide basic data for chestnut varieties improvement. There were slight differences among varieties in leaf unfolding time and leaf unfolding was late in 2010 compared to 2008 and 2009. Leaf unlolding took about 8 days to complete in 2008 and 2009, but that took about two weeks to complete in 2010. In 2008 and 2009, flowering beginning and flowering end of staminate flower occurred in early May and June, those were detained by low temperature of April in 2010. Although pistallte flower in flowering characteristics showed very similar to flowering period of staminate flower, The flowering beginning for pistillate flower was earlier approximately 20 days than for staminate flower.

  • The 167 plus tree clones of Pinus koraiensis in clone bank planted in 1983 were investigated for time of flowering, rate of flowering, and number of flowering from 1986 to 1989. The results were as follows : 1) There were clones in the minority which do not cross in natural pollination between earlest flowering female clones and latest shedding male clones. 2) The rate of male flowering appeared less than rate of female flowering and received influence of genetic more than rate of female flowering. 3) The numbers of flowering in female and male flower were affected by small number of clones. 4) The flowering number for female strobili was not related to the flowering number of male flower. The 42 clones among 167 clone had not male flower. 5) The flowering number of 167clones were classified three groups in female flower and four groups in male flower by L.S.D 5% test. 6) The clones with abundant female and male flower were selected based on the component analysis. 7) As Based on flowering rate and number of female, the juvenile phase of plus tree clones appeared to be until four years after grafting ; the transition period appeared to be from five to seven years after grafting ; the adult phase appeared to begin from eight years after grafting, 8) The grafted trees of Pinus koraiensis appeared early flowerring about six years compared with seedling trees.

  • This study was carried out to obtain the basic informations on the flowering habit, pollination patterns and seed setting in Hosta plantaginea Aschers. Flowers came out in the night with white color. Almost fertilization seemed to be out by wind in early and full flowering. But bearing pods by insects and fertilization rate by wind were increased by interval of flowering and particular scent slowly decreased in after flowering. Bearing pods and seeds setting rate were $65.0\%,\;40.9\%$ per peduncle after artificial pollination, and also $33.3\%,\;24.3\%$ in natural pollination, respectively. The flowering times was all around seven to eight o'clock at night and optimum temperature for pollination was $25{\sim}28^{\circ}C$.

  • Sesame is typically a temperature- and day length-sensitive plant, as its flowering is promoted under high temperature and shorter day length conditions. The experiment carried out in the present study revealed that day length influenced sesame flowering to a much greater extent than temperature. The degree of day length influence differed depending on the sesame variety. Days from sowing to flowering was negatively correlated with yield-related characteristics such as stem length, capsule number per plant, 1,000 seed weight, and seed weight per 10a. In cases where the period from sowing to flowering was longer and flowering date was later, the reproductive growth period was shorter during maturity. Analysis of the effects of temperature and day length on seed yield production revealed that temperature was a much more influential factor than day length. However, day length was more influential than temperature under low temperatures, such as 22℃. All varieties apart from Ansan were shown to be primarily influenced by temperature. Sesame varieties were grouped in view of optimal seed sowing time through principal components analysis. The Poongsung and Sungboon varieties favored early sowing under low temperatures and short day lengths. The DT45, Poongsung, 90 days, Ansan, and Sungboon varieties favored late sowing under high temperatures and long day lengths. The Yangbaek and Arum varieties could be sown both early and late.

  • The new white calla lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica) cultivar 'White Cutie' was bred at the National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science (NIHHS) in 2011. 'Childsiana' showing the multi-flowering characteristic and 'Wedding March' resistant to soft rot disease were artificially crossed in 2004. Of the progeny, 'White Cutie' was selected specifically for use in cut flower production after investigation over seven years (2005 to 2011) of genetic and phenotypic characteristics, resistance against soft rot, and customer preference regarding the culture vigor and post-harvest quality. 'White Cutie' was early flowering (85.6 days to flowering) with white flowers (RHS W155C), although it had a mid-sized flower in which spathe height and width were 8.6 cm and 8.7 cm, respectively. It was multi-flowering (6.2 flowers per plant) and produced a very high number of cormels (13.4 per plant). Furthermore, it was resistant to soft rot disease.

Effect of Gibberellin Biosynthesis Inhibitor Ancymidol on Growth, Floral Initiation and Endogenous GA levels in Sorghum bicolor (수수의 생육과 개화 및 내생 GA 함량에 미치는 지벨렐린 생합성억제제 Ancymidol의 영향)

  • This study was conducted to correlate changes in plant growth and flowering behavior with inhibition of gibberellin synthesis following application of GA biosynthesis inhibitor. Two sorghum genotypes, wild-type and phyB-1(phytochrome B mutant) which grow fast and flowers early relative to the wild-type, were used. Both growth and floral initiation of these two genotypes were greatly affected by ancymidol concentration increased. However, these growth inhibition and delayed flowering are almost completely overcome by simultaneous applications of 31.6ppm $GA_3$. The ability of $GA_3$ to reverse the effect of the inhibition on both growth and floral initiation in sorghum suggests a role for native GAs in sorghum flowering. This result was contrast to the fact that in some long day plants GA biosynthesis inhibitors will inhibit shoot elongation but not floral initiation. In sorghum, inhibition of vegetative growth by GA biosynthesis inhibitor is accompanied by a delay in flowering. Ten ppm of ancymidol treatments drastically reduced all early-13-hydroxylation pathway GAs($GA_{12}$, $GA_{53}$, $GA_{19}$, $GA_{20}$, $GA_3$, and $GA_8$) levels.

  • This experiment was carried out to understand the effect of pre-sowing seed treatment by GA$_3$ and IAA on flowering and characteristics of yield component in peanuts. Peanut seed was treated by soaking in 10, 50, 100ppm of GA$_3$ solution, and 50, 100, 200ppm of IAA solution. Treatments of GA$_3$ and IAA resulted 7-5 days earlier emergence and 11-17days shorter of the flowering date compared with the untreated control. By soaking treatments with IAA in 100ppm and GA$_3$ in 100ppm, accumulated flowers were increased at early growing stage of 30 days after flowering compared with untreated control. By soaking treatments with IAA in 100ppm and GA$_3$ in 100ppm, main stem length, branch length and internode of main stem showed to flourish at investigation from early growing stage to 3 days before harvesting.

  • This study aimed to identify leaf sheath function through the investigation of effect of removal times and removed number of leaf sheath on growth and flowering in gladiolus. The leaf sheath influenced on the growth and flowering regardless of light condition at early growth stages. When total leaf sheath were removed in early growth stages, flower stalk length and spike length remarkably decreased. Whereas days of flowering were little different by leaf sheath removal. Also when removed numbers of leaf sheath were 1, 2 and 3, the growth and flowering were little different compared to control. But when removed numbers of leaf sheath were 4, flower stalk length decreased above 25cm compared to others treatment, spike length and number of flower decreased and stem diameter became thick abnormally.
