  • We propose an algorithm for almost unsupervised detection of linear structures, in particular, axes in road network and river, as seen in synthetics aperture radar (SAR) images. The first is local step and used to extract linear features from the speckle radar image, which are treated as road segment candidates. We present two local line detectors as well as a method for fusing Information from these detectors. The second is hybrid step, we Identify the real roads among the segment candidates by defining a Markov random field (MRF) on a set of segments, which introduces contextual knowledge about the shape of road objects.

  • The performances of two commonly used feature detectors for wireless energy-harvesting cognitive radio systems are compared with the energy detector under energy causality and collision constraints. The optimal sensing duration is obtained by analyzing the effect of the detection threshold on the average throughput and collision probability. Numerical examples show that the covariance detector has the optimal sensing duration depending on an appropriate choice of the detection threshold, but no optimal sensing duration exists for the ratio of average energy to minimum eigenvalue detector.

  • On the assumption that the spectral distribution of prompt fission neutrons released from supercritical accidents can be expressed by the generalized Cranberg form with two spectral parameters, which is then transformed into the single parameter form, a variation of the fission spectrum-averaged cross-sections for some threshold reactions with varying the spectral parameter has teen calculated using an electronic computer. It appears that the average cross-sections are very sensitive to the spectral deformation, especially those for the detectors having the threshold at high neutron energy are high compared to those for the detectors of which the threshold energies are comparatively low.

  • This study presents a new dead-time measurement method using the gamma attenuation law and generalized dead-time models for nuclear gamma-ray detectors. The dead-time of the NaI(Tl) detection system was obtained to validate the new dead-time determination method using very thin lead and polyethylene absorbers. Non-paralyzing dead-time was found to be 8.39 ㎲, and paralyzing dead-time was found to be 8.35 ㎲ using lead absorber for NaI(Tl) scintillator detection system. These dead-time values are consistent with the previously reported dead-time values for scintillator detection systems. The gamma build-up factor's contribution to the dead-time was neglected because a very thin material was used.

  • We present a simulation method to design antireflection coating (ARCs) for fiber-coupled superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors. Using a finite-element method, the absorptance of the nanowire is calculated for a defined unit-cell structure consisting of a fiber, ARC layer, nanowire absorber, distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) mirror, and air gap. We develop a method to evaluate the uncertainty in absorptance due to the uncontrollable parameter of air-gap distance. The validity of the simulation method is tested by comparison to an experimental realization for a case of single-layer ARC, which results in good agreement. We show finally a double-layer ARC design optimized for a system detection efficiency of higher than 95%, with a reduced uncertainty due to the air-gap distance.

  • Among the different techniques available, nuclear methods, including gamma-gamma logging tools, are of special importance. Though the real environment which surrounds the drilled borehole is a complex fractured medium which the fluid can flow through the porosities, simulation studies generally use the traditional model of a homogeneous mixture of formation and the liquid. Considering a previously published study, which shows that modeling of fluid flow in fractured reservoirs and simulating the formation as an inhomogeneous fractured medium leads to different results compared with those of homogeneous mixture, here we study the effect of the presence of drilling fluid (mudcake) on the response of the detectors in both the models. To study this effect, a typical gamma-gamma logging tool was modeled by using the MCNPX Monte Carlo code. The results show that the responses of the detectors in the mixture model in the presence of various thicknesses of mudcake are sensitive to the density of the formation material. However, this effect is not notable in the inhomogeneous fractured medium. These results emphasize the importance of the model employed for simulation of the medium in gamma-gamma well-logging.

  • A bubble-damage polymer detector, which operation principles are based on vaporization of superheated liquid drops by interaction with radiations, is developed for neutron dosimetry. The detectors are fabricated by dispersing the superheated liquid drops of Freon12 into transparent and elastic polymer made of acylamide and glycerine. The bubbles formed by neutron irradiation are immediately visible. The neutron sensitivity of the detectors is 4-7 bubbles/10$\mu$ Sv for Am-Be neutrons.

  • X-ray detection has widely been applied in medical diagnostics, security screening, nondestructive testing in the industry, etc. Medical X-ray imaging procedures require digital flat detectors operating with low doses to reduce radiation health risks. Recently, metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have shown great potential in high-performance X-ray detection because of their attractive properties, such as strong X-ray absorption, high mobility-lifetime product, tunable bandgap, low-temperature fabrication, near-unity photoluminescence quantum yields, and fast photoresponse. In this paper, we review and introduce the development status of new perovskite X-ray detectors and imaging, which have emerged as a new promising high-sensitivity X-ray detection technology. We discuss the latest progress and future perspective of MHP-based X-ray detection in medical imaging. Finally, we compare the conventional detection methods with quantum-enhanced detection, pointing out the challenges and perspectives for future research directions toward perovskite-based X-ray applications.

  • According to the National Fire Agency, there are 1,810 waste recycling facilities, 2,094 waste treatment facilities, and 223 waste minimization facilities in Korea. Waste fires are characterized by high severity and are prone to reignition, and it is difficult to timely detect them. Waste fires consequently demand many firefighters, equipment, and time to extinguish. Notwithstanding this reality, waste is excluded from the category of special combustible materials in the Act on Installation and Management of Firefighting Systems, 2021 (the Act). Therefore, this study proposes that special combustible materials, including waste, should be incorporated into the Act, that fire detectors and photoelectric smoke detectors should be installed to enable early detection of fires, and that the use of water and foaming agents as firefighting equipment should be enforced.
