  • An analytic solution is obtained for the problem of monochromatic light scattering by optically active, concentric double cylinders. The validity of the obtained solution is indirectly checked by comparing it with solutions already reported for some special cases. The solution can be used in the optical analysis of rod-shaped biological cells which possibly have optically active nuclei containing helically wound chromosomes.

  • Wake structures behind two circular cylinders with different groove configurations(U and V-shape) have been investigated experimentally. The results were compared with those for the smooth cylinder having the same diameter D. The drag force, mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles of wake behind the cylinders were measured with varying the Reynolds number in the range of Re(sub)D=8,000∼14,000. As a result, the U-shaped groove was found to reduce the drag up to 18.6%, but the V-shaped groove reduced drag force only 2.5% compared with the smooth cylinder. As the Reynolds number increases, the vortex shedding frequency becomes a little larger than that of the smooth cylinder. The visualized flow using the smoke-wire and particle tracing methods shows the flow structure qualitatively.

  • Experimental tests are described on three ring stiffened machined circular cylinders and three ring stiffened machined circular cones, which were tested to destruction under uniform external pressure. All six vessels failed by inelastic general instability. The experiments showed that the vessels initially deformed plastically at mid-bay in the circumferential direction, and this caused the circumferential tangent modulus to become much less than the elastic Young's modulus, causing the vessels to fail through plastic general instability at pressures much less than that predicted by elastic theory. Based on a thinness ratio, two semi-empirical design charts are provided, which are intended to be used for design purposes in conjunction with the finite element method and a plastic reduction factor.

  • Hydrodynamic forces and moments produced by the swaying oscillation on the free surface were exactly calculated by Ursell-Tasai method for the cylinders with Kim's chine form sections and the sway responses of the cylinders of those chine form sections among the regular beam sea were also calculated. The results of the computation were compared with those of Lewis form sections. It is concluded that the effects of the section form on the added mass, and damping are small, if the section forms had same beam-draft ratio and sectional area coefficient in the case of sway motion. It is also known that the above little effects of section shapes on the basic hydrodynamic forces do not effect on the sway motion responses of cylinderical bodies among the regular beam sea. The sway motion responses of cylinderical bodies are varied linearly with the wave numbers.

  • In this paper, a methodology is presented for determining the optimal lamination of composite cylindrical structures subject to hydrostatic pressure. The strength criterion in association with the process of optimal design is the buckling collapse of composite cylinders under hydrostatic pressure loads. An empirical formula expressed in the form of the Merchant-Rankine equation is used to calculate the ultimate strength of filament-wound composite cylinders where genetic algorithm is applied for determining the optimized stacking sequences. It is shown that the optimized lamination provides improved collapse pressure loads. It is concluded that the developed method would be useful for the optimal lamination design of composite cylindrical structures.

  • KAERI has about 185 tons of $D-UF_6$ from 1986 and it being stored 16 48Y type cylinders inside of storage building. The $D-UF_6$ cylinders should be transported to other countries for the deconversion into stable materials such as $U_3O_8$ in order to enhance the storage safety and disposal. For the transportation to other country and loading the cylinders to the deconversion facility, the sampling process is essential. The design and procedure for the sampling are now developing, and environmental effect evaluation and risk evaluation works will be performed to acquire license for the sampling.

  • In this paper we examine the mass transport within the boundary layer near the sea bottom. The fluid domain is seperated into inner and outer region of boundary layers. In outer region, the wave field is assumed to be inviscid and irrotational. When the incident waves enter the arrays of circular cylinders, the scattering of water waves by an array of N bottom mounted vertical circular cylinders is solved using the method proposed by Linton & Evans under the potential theory. In inner region, the Navier-Stokes equation must be satisfied with boundary conditions at the boundary later and bottom is to be represented by the sum of the Eulerian mean drift and the Stokes' drift.

  • The integral equation method to solve the boundary-value problem of a 2-dimensional body oscillating in the presence of a free surface generally breaks down at and near irregular frequencies due to the hypothetical flow inside the body. In this paper singularity distributions were extended to an inner free surface to remove the irregular frequency as Ohmatsu's work in 1978, and the solution for the above problem was found by using stream function. For various bodies including Lewis form cylinders, the hydrodynamic forces were calculated numerically at various wave numbers. From the results we concluded that the irregular frequencies can be removed even for the Lewis form cylinder as Ohmatsu done for circular cylinders, and calculated hydrodynamic forces by the present method are little higher than those of Ohmatsu's when the singularities are put on the inner free surface of the body. We specially point out that the solution for heaving motion converges in an oscillatory manner but not for swaying and rolling motions.

  • The hydrodynamic flow between two eccentric cylinders is examined for small values of modified Reynolds number porosity parameter and the non-dimensional slip velocity parameter in the presence of a radial magnetic field. The stream function and the pres-sure distribution are calculated and the results are presented graph-ically.
