  • In mathematical statistics education, we can use mutual information as a tool for evaluating the degree of dependency between two random variables. The ordinary correlation coefficient provides information only on linear dependency, not on nonlinear relationship between two random variables if any. In this paper as a measure of the degree of dependency between random variables, we suggest the use of symmetric uncertainty and ${\lambda}$ which are defined in terms of mutual information. They can be also considered as generalized correlation coefficients for both linear and non-linear dependence of random variables.

  • A study was made on the change of vegetation in Yungil area after the erosion control works. The area was divided into three major areas, the devastated land area, the afforested area and the subclimax area. Two groups of plant, i.e., the common species in all area and the different species confined in the subclimax area, were identified by the interspecific correlation analysis based on the positive correlation value at 5% significance level. High similarity among the sites in the afforested region was indicated by the DIF (difference measure) value, lower than 0.33. However, the devastated area and the subclimax area were distinguished completely. The change in species diversity has been extremely low since the erosion control works. Robinia pseudo-acacia was the dominant species in the afforested region and showed an adequate growth status.

  • The single-pass perfusion experiments were performed in anesthetized rats to investigate the effects of perfusates and their osmolality on the water transport and to determine the correlation between the extent of water transport and the volume change of perfusate. Phenol red was used as a nonabsorbable marker. In normal rats, when perfused at a flow rate of 0.5 ml/min, 2-(N-rnorpholino) ethanesulfonic acid (MES) and S$\phi$rensen's phosphate buffers showed minimal net water transport as 0.125 and 0.173 %/cm of intestinal length, respectively. Hypotonic perfusate of 200 mOsm/kg of water and hypertonic perfusate of 400 mOsm/kg of water generated significant water transport compared with isotonic perfusate of 300 mOsm/kg of water. There was a linear correlation between the extent of water transport and the volume change of perfusate, suggesting that the volume change can be used as a measure of water transport.

  • A stereo matching has been an important tool for reconstructing three dimensional terrain. By using stereo matching technique, DEM(Digital Elevaton Map) can be generated by the disparity from a reference image to a target image. Generally disparity map can be evaluated by matching the reference image to the target image and if the role of the reference and the target are interchanged, a different DEM can be obtained. In this paper, we propose a new fusion technique to estimate the optimal DEM by eliminating the false DEM due to occlusion. To detect the false DEM, we utilize two measure of accuracy: self-consistency and cross-correlation score. We test the effectiveness of the proposed methods with a quantitative analysis using simulated images. Experimental result indicate that the proposed methods show 24.4% and 33.1% improvement over either DEM.

  • In this paper, we first propose new texture features, BVLC (block variation of local correlation coefficients) moments, for content-based image retrieval (CBIR) and then present an image retrieval method based on the fusion of BDIP and BVLC moments. BDIP uses the local probabilities in image blocks to extract valley and edges well. BVLC uses the variations of local correlation coefficients in images blocks to measure texture smoothness well. In order not to be affected with the movement, rotation, and size of an object, the first and second moments of BDIP and BVLC are used for CBIR. Corel DB and Vistex DB are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed retrieval method. Experimental results show that the presented retrieval method yields average 12% better performance than the method using only BDIP or BVLC moments and average 13% better performance than the method using wavelet moments.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between children's playfulness, the degree of preschool adjustment and behavior problems. The subjects were 118 children from 3 child care centers and 5 kindergartens in Kyungbuk province. Children's playfulness was measured through the children's playfulness scale (CPS) and the level of preschool adjustment was measured through the preschool adjustment questionnaire (PAQ). The modified version of Kim's (2000) Preschool Behavior Questionnaire (PBQ), created by Behar and Stringfield (1974) was used to measure the acceptability of children's behaviors. The regression and correlation analysis was performed through the use of SPSS 12, and the findings are as follows. First, there exists a meaningful correlation between the children's playfulness, the degree of preschool adjustment, and the acceptability of behavior problems. Second, the degree of preschool adjustment appears to be a reliable predictor of children's playfulness.

  • This study is the second study which was aimed to validate the Infant/ Toddler Environment Rating Scale(ITERS). The test-retest reliability included 10 infant/toddler classes among 30 national/public and private child care centers in Inchon city which had been observed in the first validation study. The Spearman's correlation coefficient for test-retest reliability was ranged from .52 to .84. In addition, two raters observed 10 family day care centers in Inchon city, where two observers independently rated each centers on the ITERS during a single visit. The Spearman's correlation coefficient for interrater reliability was ranged from.72 to .99 For the second measure of content validity, experts who were working in day care centers and who were graduate students, lecturers, or professors majoring child studies rated the appropriateness of each ITERS items for the provision of high-quality programs for infants and toddlers, using a 1(low) to 5(high) scale. The mean rating was ranged from 2.52 to 4.52. In sum, when the rating scores were analyzed by the type of child care centers, national/public child care centers have better quality than private or family child care centers.

  • This study investigated the difference in adopting strategies and goals and the relations in strategies, goals and peer acceptance in term of gender and ages under peer conflict situation. The 625 subjects were selected from the fifth and sixth graders of elementary schools and the first and second graders middle schools. The instruments of measurement were Conflict Resolution Measure, Sociometric Scale. The main findings of this study are as follows: 1) Children's strategies in peer conflict situation has significant difference according to gender and grade. 2) Children's goals in peer conflict situation has significant difference according to gender and grade. 3) There were signigicant correlation between strategies and goals. 4) There were significant correlation in strategies and peer acceptance.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the correlation among uncertainty, mastery and appraisal of uncertainty in hospitalized children's mothers. Method: Self report questionnaires were used to measure the variables Variables were uncertainty, mastery and appraisal of uncertainty. In data analysis, the SPSSWIN 12.0 program was utilized for descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and regression analysis. Result: Reliability of the instruments was cronbach's $alpha=.84{\sim}.94$. Mastery negatively correlated with uncertainty(r=-.444, p=.000) and danger appraisal of uncertainty(r=-.514, p=.000). In regression of danger appraisal of uncertainty, uncertainty and mastery were significant predictors explaining 39.9%. Conclusion: Mastery was a significant mediating factor between uncertainty and danger appraisal of uncertainty in hospitalized children's mothers. Therefore, nursing interventions which improve mastery must be developed for hospitalized children's mothers.

  • In this paper, we propose a heuristic method to select features using a Two-Phase Markov Blanket-based (TPMB) algorithm. The first phase, filtering phase, of TPMB algorithm works by filtering the obviously redundant features. A non-linear correlation method based on Information theory is used as a metric to measure the redundancy of a feature [1]. In second phase, approximating phase, the Markov Blanket (MB) of a system is estimated by employing the concept of cross entropy to identify the MB. We perform experiments on microarray data and report two popular dataset, AML-ALL [3] and colon tumor [4], in this paper. The experimental results show that the TPMB algorithm can significantly reduce the number of features while maintaining the accuracy of the classifiers.
