This study investigates the relationships of perfectionism and the affective traits(academic self-concept, learning attitude, interest, mathematical anxiety, learning habits) in mathematics between the gifted students and the regular students in Korean Middle Schools. The findings of this study can be used for the understanding of the gifted students, and as data or resources for counsellors when they advise the gifted students on enhancing study strategies and developing future courses. This study was investigated by measuring the relationships between perfectionism and the affective traits on mathematics between two groups. Here, the correlation analysis, t-test, and regression analysis of the SPSS for Window 12.0 Program were applied to measure the differences of both groups. Therefore, there were no differences in perfectionism between the gifted students and the regular students. But the self-oriented perfectionism of the gifted students appeared higher compare with regular students. The affective traits in mathematics of the gifted students appeared more positive compare with regular students. There were a few correlations between the perfectionism and the affective traits in mathematics at two group all. however the self-oriented perfectionism and the affective traits in mathematics showed to correlation. There were several suggestions based on the results of this study. First, the results showed that professional assistance is needed for the gifted students so that their perfectionism flows positively into developing their gifts. Secondly, the results suggested that specialized mathematical program reflecting on the affective traits of the gifted students in mathematics should be offered.Lastly, tthe results of this study suggested a researcher regarding relevance with perfectionism and affective traits regarding subject shall be performed more. The result of research shall be included to contents of training for the gifted students and their parents.
In this paper, in order to lay the foundation for clearly determining the scope of contents handled in elementary math textbooks in Korea, what may be issues are discussed with respect to the contents handled in the current math textbooks. First of all, handling of percent point, concave polygons, and possibilities of event that will happen are discussed, the handling of them can be a issue in the sense of inconsistencies to the curriculum. Next, handling of fractions attaching units of discrete quantities and fractions attaching 'times' are discussed, the handling of them can be a issue in the sense of gap between everyday life and definition in math textbooks. Finally, handling of representing natural numbers into fractions and the positional relationship of geometrical figures are discussed, the handling of them can be a issue in the sense of a logical jump. The following three implications obtained from these discussions are presented as conclusions. First, it is necessary to establish clearly the relationship of textbooks and curriculum. Second, it is necessary to give attention to using the way to define or deal with concepts in math textbooks mixed with the way to use them in everyday life. Third, it is necessary to identify and eliminate the logical jumps in math textbooks.
This study looked into the procedures of and the status on the implementation of the new 7th national curriculum at the secondary school level. It examined the processes taken by the local boards of education in due course of facilitating the schools with the new curriculum implementation. More specifically the study examined, 1) the degree to which the particular innovation(i.e., student-centered, flexible and autonomous school-based curriculum, etc.) is being implemented as planned; and 2) how it is being implemented. It conducted a situation-oriented analysis in cooperation with three local boards of education. Classroom observations, teacher interviews, questionnaires for teachers and supervisors were utilized and the three major criteria of interpreting the result were the three core concepts of the 7th national curriculum, that is, the degree of '(1)reorganization, (2)student-centeredness and (3)diversification/ specialization' of the curriculum. Detailed documentation on the processes of the local bureaus of education and on the classroom practices are made in order to provide schools and policy makers with relevant and practical suggestions for further improvement of curriculum implementation. Ultimately, The greater the awareness of the intention of the new curriculum on the part of both the staff at the local school boards and teachers, the greater the degree of implementation. And the higher the quality of planning to meet problems, the greater the degree of implementation. Continuous efforts are needed to involve teachers in the process of curriculum implementation. The greater the active support of the teachers, the greater the degree of implementation.
In this study, by analyzing of types and functions of questions presented in Data and Chance area of the mathematics textbooks for grades 1-6 of the 2015 revised curriculum, the characteristics of the questions presented in the textbook were identified, and implications for teaching and learning related to the questions in this textbook were obtained. Types and functions of the presented questions showed different proportions of appearance according to the grade clusters, and this seems to be related to the learning contents for each grade clusters and the characteristics of grade clusters. In addition, it can be seen that the functions of questions are related to the types of questions. Teachers should have pedagogical content knowledge about Data and Chance area as well as developmental characteristics for each grade clusters. In addition, the teacher should present an suitable question for the level of grade clusters and the nature of the content to be taught so that effective learning can be achieved based on the understanding of the characteristics and functional characteristics of each type of questions. The results of this study can contribute to statistical teaching in a progressive direction by providing a foundation for textbook writing and teaching/learning.
This study aimed at exploring how an instructor constructs meanings through content-based instruction (CBI) offered to pre-service teachers majoring in early childhood education. The course, early childhood mathematics education, was conducted during the spring semester in 2011. This study adopted a narrative inquiry, and data were collected through observations, interviews, and work samples. This study found that during the whole process from the preparation phase to the end-of-program evaluation, the instructor captured diverse challenging moments. During the preparation phase, she needed to have careful orchestration in designing lessons in order to overcome her feeling of pressure as a non-native speaker of English and design the integration of contents and English language learning to be truly powerful. In the phase of implementation, the lack of student motivation and building a good rapport between the instructor and the students were certainly challenges. The result of the student evaluations weakened her desire to implement CBI. The instructor incorporated diverse instructional strategies to overcome the obstacles. The instructor's experiences in this study will positively shape future educators' thinking and learning about meaningful and appropriate academic English instruction for content-area teaching of college students who were majoring in early childhood education.

There are two concepts of division: measurement division and partitive or fair-sharing division. Students are expected to understand comprehensively division algorithm in both contexts. Contents of textbooks and teachers' guidebooks should be suitable for helping students develop comprehensive understanding of algorithm for whole-number division in both contexts. The results of the analysis of textbooks and teachers' guidebooks shows that they fail to connect two division contexts with division algorithm comprehensively. Their expedient and improper use of two division contexts would keep students from developing comprehensive understanding of algorithm for whole-number division. Based on the results of analysis, some ways of improving textbooks and teachers' guidebooks are suggested.
This study was designed to gain insight to adopt CAS into secondary level algebra education in Korea. Most inactive usage of calculators in math and most negative effects of calculators on their achievements of Korean students were shown in International studies such as TIMSS-R. A comparative study was carried out with consideration of mathematical backgrounds and technological environments. 8 Korean students and 26 US students in Grade 11 were participated in this study. Subjects' Problem solving process and their strategies of CAS usage in classical Box-problem with CAS were analyzed. CAS helped modeling by providing symbolic manipulation commands and graphs with students' mathematical knowledge. Results indicates that CAS requires shifts focus in algebraic contents: recognition of decimal & algebraic presentations of numbers; linking various presentations, etc. The extent of instrumentation effects on the selection of problem solving strategies among Korea and US students. This study is derived from a student who can add without knowing the addition principle. To understand where the student's response come from, we came to analyse the curriculum contents of natural numbers, decimals and fractions addition principle. At the same time, we surveyed two different school of forty six sixth grade participants with questionnaires to determine whether it is a problem of the student or an universal one. As a result, we found that there is a room for improvement in the addition and connections of addition. We propose appropriate instructional method regarding connections of addition and addition principle of natural numbers, decimals and fractions. The conclude there is a close relation and differences among the principles of natural numbers, decimals and fractions in the proposed instructional method. Therefore, we need to consider and instruct the differences of the number expansion.
This study aimed to analyze the changes in the physics curriculum of elementary schools over the past years and to discuss the issues faced by the science curriculum for elementary education prior to the next curriculum revision. We analyzed changes in the elements of the contents from the 7th curriculum to the 2015 revised curriculum and reviewed studies conducted after the revision in 2015. Additionally, three professors majoring in physics education discussed the results of the curriculum analysis. The result indicates that content of the physics curriculum for elementary education was generally reduced after the 7th curriculum. Specifically, difficult concepts were omitted or designated to a higher school level. Concerns related to the science curriculum pertain to the content adequacy and difficulty of the current curriculum, its relationship with mathematics, connection between the Nuri curriculum and the integrated curriculum for the 1st and 2nd grades, and the achievement standard predicate problem.
Math education in schools have to enable students to understand the importance of math and nurture the capacity to resolve various problems in daily life with reasoning, which is therefore, always applicable to the actual world. Proportional reasoning capacity is being often used in daily life, and some kind of unit is not fixed. So students are considering it very difficult. This study looks into the difficulties that students have in proportional reasoning, what kind of problem solving strategy is being used, what the problems are in current textbooks, etc. Based on this, it tried to check the concept changes in students' proportional reasoning by developing the instruction program for 'proportional expression' unit in the 6th grade. Based on the results, this study analyzes the features of proportional reasoning instruction programs and the instruction results. Also it analyzes in-advance & after examination papers of the experimental class and comparison class to contribute to the instruction method and instruction contents improvement of 'proportional expression' unit.
