  • When new services are introduced, interaction among existing and new services has to be considered. The interaction can be characterized by the substitution or complementary effect among services. This paper analyzes how the interaction among services affects the customers' subscription decision in telecommunication services industry. Based on a face-to-face in-depth survey from a sample of 1,200 respondents, a new wireless internet access service or WiBro is analyzed to identify the substitution/complementary effect in relation to the existing other telecommunication services. Additionally, the important factors explaining both customers' subscription and substitution decisions are identified. The analysis results indicate that males and students are more likely to subscribe WIBro service. Interestingly, family size positively affects the subscription decision. However, heavy users of on-line game are reluctant to subscribe WiBro service. Among the potential WiBro subscribers, the customers who are less satisfied with the existing fixed line broadband internet access service are more likely to stop subscribing the fixed line service, which implies substitution by a new service. We believe that the consideration of the interactions among services is essential to devise a winning strategy for the new services in the highly uncertain telecommunications business environment.

  • Different from general operating policies applied for various waiting line situations, two complementary dyadic operating policies are applied alternatingly to a single server maintenance service center model. That is, either of the two dyadic Min (N, T) or Max (N, T) policy is applied to operate such center first and the other operating policy should be applied later, and then the same sequence of both operating policies is followed repeatedly. This operating policy is denoted by the Minimax (N, T) policy. Purpose: Because of the newly introduced operating policy, important system characteristics of the considered service center model such as the expected busy and idle periods, the expected number of customers in the service center and so on should be derived to provide necessary information for determination of the optimal operating policy. Methods: Based on concepts of the newly introduced Minimax (N, T) policy, all necessary system characteristics should be redefined and then derived by constructing appropriate relations between complementary two dyadic operating policies. Results: Desired system characteristics are obtained successfully using simple procedures developed by utilizing peculiar structure of the Minimax (N, T) policy. Conclusion: Applying Minimax (N, T) operating policy is equivalent to applying the simple N and T operating policies alternatingly.

  • The purpose of this study is to predict the degree of taking the complementary & alternative therapy in the home care nursing service and provide basic data for the application of it. To accomplish this, degree of general recognition of the complementary & alternative therapy, experiences, degree of concern, applicability of the therapy, and educational need should be studied. This study is a descriptive research survey on the home care nurses working at 73 medical centers out of 125 nationwide who provide hospital based home nursing care. The data was collected from Sep. 20, to Oct. 20, 2004 by ChoiHeyran's questionaries (2002). The data was analyzed by the frequency and the percentage. The results of this study are as follows ; 1. The degree of pre-cognition on the complementary & alternative therapy is very high. Information about the therapy was mostly obtained through medias. Home care nurses understand that he desirable treatment is to practice medical treatment and complementary & alternative therapy simultaneously. While 50% of them have already practiced complementary & alternative therapy among their patients. The most commonly used therapy is Acupressure. And Home care nurses have open and positive attitudes about the complementary & alternative therapy as to answer they aye ready to recommend it to their patients. 2. Over half of the Home care nurses met patients taking complementary & alternative therapy. 94.5% of them think scientific diagnosis on the effect of the therapy. advice from the doctor. and the special working staff is required to apply it on to the home care nursing. 3. 68.5% of the Home care nurses have taken education on the therapy through general comprehensive instructions and supplementary. Most of them want to have a opportunity education on the therapy because they want to provide comprehensive nursing and diversified nursing service. The preferred educations are Hand acupuncture, Acupressure & Massage and Aromatherapy, in that order. Based on the above results, the followings are recommended. 1. A study that stipulates the types, applications, and efficiency assessment of the complementary & alternative therapy practiced by Home care nurses in the home care nursing care procedure. • Traditional, complementary, and alternative medicine(CAM) constitutes a major source of health care in developing countries. Its therapies, products and practices are increasing used in industrialized countries, typically by around 50% of the population. However, controls on the provider of CAM services and supply and promotion of complementary medicines are weak in these countries. These trends evoke important public health questions relating to benefits and detriments, safety and quality from medical, financial, and social perspectives. In the western counties, investment in research is increasing, and some guideline is now available for ensuring their quality, efficacy, and safety according to the criteria of evidence-based medicine as legally demanded. National policies and legislation are being developed in many countries and often include partnerships between biomedical and traditional health practitioners. The purposes of the study were to review the policies on CAM, to examine the responses of the government to cope with use of CAM in industrialized countries. Lastly, some implications and recommendation are suggested.

  • Congestion occurs whenever users interfere with each other, while competing for scarce resources. In a congested market, such as a telecommunication service market, users of telecommunication services incur costs in using the service in addition to the price. The user's own time costs involved in learning to use the service, waiting for the service, and making use of the service are typically greater than the price of telecommunication services. A market equilibrium analysis is performed in which a method for user demand aggregation is developed. The effects of price changes on user demands and market demands for congested services are examined. It is found that total market demands may increase as the price for less-congested services increase under certain demand conditions. This suggests that a nonuniform pricing scheme for a congested service may improve the utilization of the congested system. The sign of price cross-elasticity for congested services is show to vary with demand conditions. A possible complementary property of congested services is found and the implication of such a property is discussed. It is argued that such a complementary property may lead to a cross subsidy in a market with congestion. Finally, comparisons between uniform pricing and nonuniform pricing policies are made. A specific numerical example is given to show that a nonuniform pricing policy may be Pareto superior to a uniform pricing policy.

  • Archival descriptions are significant in utilizing archives, as they are important tools for archival research and use. Meanwhile, content services are key services in modern society, where the use of archives and the importance of content are increasing. In this study, archival descriptions and content services were not viewed as different areas but as a relationship that could advance complementarily. This is because if archival descriptions are rich and well-prepared, high-quality content can be produced based on them, and archival descriptions can be enriched if well-made content is supplemented or linked to the descriptions again. This study intends to reveal the complementary relationship between archival descriptions and content services and propose an advancement plan based on this relationship. As such, the current status and problems of the archival descriptions and content services of the National Archives of Korea and the Presidential Archives website were analyzed, and the UK's National Archives (TNA), the USA's National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), the Seoul Metropolitan Archives, and the Korea Democracy Foundation's Open Archives were selected as exemplary cases for comparison. Based on the implications of the six analyzed institutions, an advancement plan for archival descriptions and content services, as well as a complementary development plan, was proposed. Through this study, it is expected that archival descriptions and content services will develop in a mutually complementary direction.

  • Securing the appropriability strategy of R&D funding for technology innovation is very important because R&D needs a lot of time and money. Appropriability means the environmental factors that govern an innovator's ability to capture profits generated by an innovation. Generally appropriability mechanism has five kinds, including patent, secrecy, lead time advantage, complementary sales & service, complementary manufacturing. In this paper, we surveyed domestic software industry professionals about appropriability mechanism strategy, and presented a result of priority of each factor and difference between previous research and this study, using the pair-wise comparison method. The result of study showed that domestic IT manufacturing companies prefer patent better than other appropriability mechanism.
