  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to identify the relationships between family function and successful aging of vulnerable elderly using the circumplex model. Methods: The participants were the elderly (N=401) who were over 65 years old living in H city under the National Livelihood Security Act. Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale III and Successful Aging Instrument were used. Results: The family function perceived by the study subjects was average $43.20{\pm}16.62$ out of maximum 100 points. According to the analysis on family types suggested by circumplex model, there were 183 people for balance family (45.6%) and 218 people (54.4%) for extreme family. The total points on successful aging were $1.67{\pm}0.37$ out of 3 points. When the difference in points on the Successful Aging instrument were analyzed according to the scores on the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Scale those points of the balanced family were statistically significant (t=2.087, p=.038). Conclusion: In case of the balanced family type, the level of perceiving successful aging was relatively higher. For the improvement of family function, it is advised that the successful aging perception among vulnerable elderly can be uplifted through a program that enables effective communication with other family members.

  • Various theoretical models have developed io both a family research area and family therapy field on he basis of several family theories and social theories in order to understand the family life and its function. These theoretical models have give rise to provide not only a framework for family therapy bt also opportunities for the development of family studies. Regardless of the devotion of these theoretical models to a family therapy however some family therapy professions have suggested the disvergence between these models and practice because the models tend to confuse therapists in their actual practices Other family therapists on the other hand have claimed the convergence between these models and practice. One of the reasons for the issues of convergence and disvergence in the family therapy study would be that various theoretical models have different sometimes contradicatable definitions and explanations for same concept. Therefore the purpose of this paper is to investigate the extent of similarities and differences among these theoretical models of practice in a way of examining family models to compare Olson's circumplex model to the Beavers systems model. Both models were based on the general systems theory. This paper consists of the explanation of Olson's circumplex model and Beavers systems model in general respectively. Then it will investigate similarities and differences between these two models in terms of the relationship between family functioning and family adaptability.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the types of family function and mental health in low-income middle aged women using the circumplex model. Method: A descriptive research design was used. A sample of 116 low income middle aged women participated in the study. The Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale III was used to measure the types of family function. Mental health was measured by the SCL. Results: The types of family function identified were balance family (59.4%), extreme family (25.9%), and mid-range family (14.7%). Significant differences were found in mental health by the family cohesion (F=3.44, p=.019) and family adaptability (F=3.31, p=.023). The mental health status of extreme family was better than mid-range family and balanced family, but such result was not statistically significant (F=0.25, p=.783). Conclusion: The Circumplex model's main hypothesis was not empirically supported that extreme family has more problematic than mid-range family and balance family. These findings emphasize the need for the development of a family system model for Korean family.

  • Audience observing visual media with care experience lots of emotional transition according to characteristics of media. Enjoy, sadness, surprising, etc, a variety of emotional state of audiences is often arranged by James Russell's 'A circumplex model of affect' utilized on psychology. Especially, in various emotions, 'Uncanny' mentioned by Sigmund Freud is represented a sharp medium existing in a crack of clearly emotional conception. Uncanny phenomenon is an emotional state of changing from unpleasant to pleasant on an audience observing visual media is been aware of immoral media generally, therefore, because this is a positive state on a social taboo, we need to analyze with a scientific analysis clearly. Therefore, this study will organize James Russell's 'A circumplex model of affect' and uncanny phenomenon, will be progressed to establish a hypothesis about a state of uncanny on audiences observing visual media and analyze results of the physiological signals experiment based on ECG(Electronic Cardiogram), GSR(Galvanic Skin Response) signals with distribution, distance, and moving time in a circumplex model of affect.

  • We propose a novel method for modeling emotional dimensions using expansion of Russell's (1980) emotional dimensions (Circumplex Model). The Circumplex Model represents emotional words in two axes (Arousal, Valence). However, other researchers have insisted that location of word in Russell's model which is expressed by single point could not represent exact position. Consequently, it is difficult to apply this model in engineering fields (such as Science of Emotion & Sensibility, Human-Computer-Interaction, Ergonomics, etc.). Therefore, we propose a new modeling method which expresses emotional word not as a single point but as a region. We conducted survey to obtain actual data and derived equations using ellipse formula to represent emotional region. Furthermore, we applied ANEW and IAPS which are commonly used in many studies to our emotional model using pattern recognition algorithm. Using our method, we could solve problems with Russell's model and our model is easily applicable to the field of engineering.

  • In this paper, we verify the relation between elements (active and inactive) of Russell's emotional dimension ("A Circumplex Model") to propose a new representing method. Russell's emotional dimension expresses emotional words (happy, joy, sad, nervous, etc.) as a point on the two dimensions (Arousal and Valence). It is most commonly used in many filed such as Science of Emotion & Sensibility, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), and Psychology etc. But other researchers have insisted that Russell's emotional dimension have to be modified because of its inherent problems. Such problems included the possibility of mixed feelings, the difference of emotion and sensibility, and the difference of Arousal axis and Valence axis. Therefore, we verify relationship of A Circumplex Model's elements (active and inactive) and find how to people express their Arousal feelings using survey. We finally propose new method to express emotion in Russell's emotional dimension. Using this method, we can solve Russell's problems and compensate other researches.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between children's self-concepts and (1) types of functional family systems. (2) family cohesion and adaptability levels, and (3) the satisfaction of children with their current family systems. The subjects of this study were 347 middle S. E. S. children (168 boys, 179 girls) in grade 6. Analysis of functional family systems was by The Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales III(1985) of the Circuplex Model (Olson et al., 1979). The Self-concept Inventory (Lim Jae Leun, 1987) was used to assess children's self-concepts. The data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA, $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ and Pearson correlation. It was found that there were no differences in children's self-concepts by types of functional systems. There were differences in children's self-concepts by family cohesion and adaptability levels. That is, the higher the level of cohesion and adaptability the more positive the child's self-concept. The more the child was satisfied with his/her current family system, the more positive the child's self-concept. Children whose family systems were at a high level of family cohesion and adaptability were more satisfied with their current family systems.
