  • This study compared a number of related variables according to children's stress types using the data mining method. The sample population was taken from the Korean Youth Panel Survey (KYPS) data (2688, sixth-grade elementary students). The results of the decision tree model revealed that : (1) Parental expectations in terms of study, life satisfaction, self-esteem, parental attachment, aggression, the spousal relationship, other cognition (one's own misdeeds), and study related worries were all related to parent stress. (2) Life satisfaction, study related worries, admitting one's own misdeeds, gender, other cognition (one's own misdeeds), aggression, the spousal relationship, and a sense of alienation in the school were all related to appearance stress. (3) Study related worries, parental expectations in terms of study, aggression, life satisfaction, self-esteem, parental attachment, satisfying parental expectations, parental attachment, and teacher attachment were all related to academic stress. (4) A sense of alienation in the school, mixing with peers in the school, aggression, self-esteem, other cognition (one's own misdeeds), study related worries, parental abuse, and life satisfaction were all significantly related to friend stress. These results suggested that children's diverse conditions should be considered according to the stress types if we are to understand and cope with these stress types more efficiently.

On the other hand, preschoolers' exclusion by peers was negatively correlated with preschoolers' social skills. (2) The most influential factor on preschoolers' exclusion by peers was preschoolers' cooperative behaviors, and the next influential factor on preschoolers' exclusion by peers was maternal rejective parenting behaviors. In conclusion, maternal rejective parenting behaviors and preschoolers' social skills influence preschoolers' exclusion by peers.

  • This study examined the relationships between children's perceptions of mothers' psychological control, and children's behavior problems(depression, anxiety, withdrawal, and aggression). In order to expand the study on the relationships, special attention was given to the possible moderator effects of children's sex and peer acceptance on the relationships. The subjects were 272 6th graders residing in Seoul. It was found that children's perceptions of mothers' psychological control was significantly related with the levels of children's depression, anxiety, withdrawal, and aggression. The results indicated that mothers' higher psychological control was related to higher levels of children's depression, anxiety, withdrawal, and aggression. No significant sex difference was found in the relationship between children's perceptions of mothers' psychological control and children's behavior problems although all of the correlations between mothers' psychological control and each of the behavior problem variables were somewhat higher among boys than among girls. Children's perceptions of peer acceptance were found to be a significant moderator of the relationship between mothers' psychological control and children's depression, and of the relationship between mothers' psychological control and children's aggression. These findings indicated that peer acceptance could function as a protecting factor for children who perceive their mothers to be psychologically controlling.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to construct a structural model that explains the factors affecting aggression among elementary school students and to verify their suitability. Methods: The study period was from June to August 2018. The study subjects were fifth- and sixth-graders at an elementary school. In total, 291 surveys were collected, of which 259 were analyzed. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 24.0 and AMOS version 24.0. Results: The fit of the final model was acceptable ($x^2=160.08$ [p<.001], GFI=.921, AGFI=.869, CFI=.919, SRMR=.057, and RMSEA=.086). Thus, eight of the 10 hypotheses were shown to be statistically significant. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that positive and open parenting behaviors and training children to engage in self-control are needed to reduce their aggression. In addition, considerable attention and education are required in the home, school, and society so that children can learn to properly recognize and express their emotions and establish suitable beliefs regarding aggressive behavior.

  • Objective: This study examined the influence of maternal attachment on adjustment in adolescence and investigated whether paternal attachment had any moderating effects on the relationship between maternal attachment and adjustment in adolescence. Methods: The participants of this study were 300 second graders from two middle schools in Seoul. We measured paternal and maternal attachment as perceived by the participants, adjustment in adolescence through school life adjustment, depression, and relational aggression. The study applied correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis suggested by Baron and Kenny (1986). Results: First, participants with high parental attachment showed high levels of school life adjustment, low level of depression, and low levels of relational aggression, demonstrating healthy psycho-social adjustment in adolescence. Second, paternal attachment played a facilitating role in the process of high maternal attachment's positive influence on school life adjustment. Third, paternal attachment mitigated the process of low maternal attachment's negative influence on depression. Conclusion: Our findings highlight the importance of emotional communication, support, and intimacy between parents and children in middle school. Furthermore, it emphasized the importance of the paternal role and involvement in the mother-child relationship.

  • This study examined the mediating effect of maternal abuse and neglect on the relationship between socioeconomic status and preschoolers' social behavior. A total of 702 mothers with 3-year-olds(353 boys and 349 girls) and the children's teachers, all of whom reside in Seoul, participated in the study. Socioeconomic status was measured by maternal educational level and monthly household income. Maternal abuse and neglect were assessed by asking mothers to complete the Parent-to-Child Version of the Conflict Tactics Scales. Both mothers and teachers completed the Preschool Social Behavior Scale in order to evaluate prosocial behavior and aggression. The results indicated that both socioeconomic status and maternal abuse and neglect were significantly associated with preschool children's prosocial behavior, and socioeconomic status was significantly and negatively related to aggression. Furthermore, a structural equation model confirmed the mediating effect of maternal abuse and neglect on the relationship between socioeconomic status and preschool children's prosocial behavior, suggesting the need for interventions focusing on improving positive parenting and decreasing negative parenting to promote prosocial behavior.

For boys, nonvictimized aggressors were more sociable/active than both aggressive and passive victims. Aggressive victims were more shy/emotional than nonvictimized aggressors and normative contrasts, and were exposed to the highest parental marital conflict. For girls, passive victims were the least sociable/active among the four groups, and showed lower attachment to fathers than normative contrasts. Both aggressive and passive victims were more shy/emotional than nonvictimized aggressors and normative contrasts, and normative contrasts were exposed to the lowest parental marital conflict.

  • This study examined the relations among toddlers' temperament, maternal parenting, and toddlers' social withdrawal and aggression. One hundred and two mothers of two-year-old children (49 boys and 53 girls) completed questionnaires and Q-sort. Data were analyzed by correlation analyses and regression analyses. First, toddlers' pleasure was negatively related to social withdrawal, while social fearfulness was positively related to social withdrawal. Also, toddlers' activity level and anger proneness were positively related to aggression. Second, the encouragement of independence in maternal parenting was negatively linked to toddlers' social withdrawal, and maternal rejection was positively linked to toddlers' aggression. Third, toddlers' pleasure and interest/persistence were positively associated with mothers' encouragement of independence, and toddlers' activity level and anger proneness were positively associated with mothers' rejection. Finally, mothers' encouragement of independence acted as a mediator between toddlers' pleasure and social withdrawal. Also, toddlers' activity level and anger proneness influenced aggression through maternal rejection. These results indicate that toddlers' temperament and maternal parenting play crucial roles in the development of toddlers' maladaptive behaviors such as social withdrawal and aggression.
