Discretization errors are extremely challenging conundrums of discrete ordinates calculations for radiation transport problems with void regions. In previous work, we have presented a multi-collision source method (MCS) to overcome discretization errors, but the efficiency needs to be improved. This paper proposes a goal-oriented algorithm for the MCS method to adaptively determine the partitioning of the geometry and dynamically change the angular quadrature in remaining iterations. The importance factor based on the adjoint transport calculation obtains the response function to get a problem-dependent, goal-oriented spatial decomposition. The difference in the scalar fluxes from one high-order quadrature set to a lower one provides the error estimation as a driving force behind the dynamic quadrature. The goal-oriented algorithm allows optimizing by using ray-tracing technology or high-order quadrature sets in the first few iterations and arranging the integration order of the remaining iterations from high to low. The algorithm has been implemented in the 3D transport code ARES and was tested on the Kobayashi benchmarks. The numerical results show a reduction in computation time on these problems for the same desired level of accuracy as compared to the standard ARES code, and it has clear advantages over the traditional MCS method in solving radiation transport problems with reflective boundary conditions.

The BEM for linear elastic stress analysis is applied to the highly rotating axisymmetric body problem which also involves the thermoelastic effects due to steady-state thermal conduction. The axisymmetric BEM formulation is briefly summarized and an alternative approach for transforming the volume integrals associated with such body force kernels into equivalent boundary integrals is described in a way of using the concept of inner product and vector identity. A discretization scheme for higher order BE is outlined for numerical treatment of the resulting boundary integral equations, and it is consequently illustrated by determining the stress distributions of the turbine rotor disk of the small turbojet engine(ADD 500) for which a FEM stress solution has been furnished by author.

A structural-acoustic coupling problem involving fluid in a cavity divided with flexible walls and porous materials is investigated in this paper. In many practical problems, the use of finite elements to discretize the fluid region leads to large stiffness and mass matrices. But, since the acoustic boundary element discretization requires to put elements only on the surface of structure, the size of matrices is reduced considerably. Here, we developed a numerical analysis program for the structural-acoustic coupling problems of the multi-region cavity, using boundary elements for the fluid regions and finite elements for the structure. By considering sound transmission through layered systems placed in a cavity, the accuracy of the coupled acoustical-structural finite element model has been verified by comparing its transmission loss predictions with analytical sloutions. Example problems are included to investigate the characteristics of the multi-region structural-acoustic coupling system with porous material.
A computer code has been developed for the computation of the viscous flow around a ship model with the free surface. In this code, the incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved numerically by a finite difference method which employes second-order finite differences for the spatial discretization and a four-stage Runge-Kutta scheme for the temporal integration of the governing equations. For the turbulence closure, a modified version of the Baldwin-Lomax model is exploited. The location of the free surface is determined by solving the equation of the kinematic free-surface condition using the Lax-Wendroff scheme and the boundary-fitted grid is generated at each time step so that one of the grid surfaces always coincides with the free surface. An inviscid approximation of the dynamic free-surface boundary condition is applied as the boundary conditions for the velocity and pressure on the free surface. To validate the computational method and the computer code developed in the present study, the numerical computations are carried out for both Wigley parabolic hull and Series 60 $C_B=0.6$ ship model and the computational results are compared with the experimental data.

A general procedure for the numerical solution of coupled, nonlinear, differential two-point boundary-value problems, solutions of which are crucial to the controller design, has been developed and demonstrated. A fixed-end-points, free-terminal-time, optimal-control problem, which is derived from Pontryagin's Maximum Principle, is solved by an extension of Davidenko's method, a differential form of Newton's method, for algebraic root finding. By a discretization process like finite differences, the differential equations are converted to a nonlinear algebraic system. Davidenko's method reconverts this into a pseudo-time-dependent set of implicitly coupled ODEs suitable for solution by modern, high-performance solvers. Another important advantage of Davidenko's method related to the time-optimal problem is that the terminal time can be computed by treating this unkown as an additional variable and sup- plying the Hamiltonian at the terminal time as an additional equation. Davidenko's method uas used to produce optimal trajectories of a single-degree-of-freedom problem. This numerical method provides switching times for open-loop control, minimized terminal time and optimal input torque sequences. This numerical technique could easily be adapted to the multi-point boundary-value problems.

A dynamic analysis method that freezes a time domain by discretization and solves the spatial propagation equation has a unique feature that provides a degree of freedom on spatial domain compared with the space discretization or space-time discretization finite element method. Using this feature, the time finite element analysis can be effectively applied to optimize the spatial characteristics of distributed type actuators. In this research, the time domain finite element method was used to discretize the model. A state variable vector was used in the discretization to include arbitrary initial conditions. A performance index was proposed on spatial domain to consider both potential and vibrational energy, so that the resulting shape of the distributed actuator was optimized for dynamic control of the structure. It is assumed that the structure satisfies the final rest condition using the realizable control scheme although the initial disturbance can affect the system response. Both equations on states and costates were derived based on the selected performance index and structural model. Ricatti matrix differential equations on state and costate variables were derived by the reconfiguration of the sub-matrices and application of time/space boundary conditions, and finally optimal actuator distribution was obtained. Numerical simulation results validated the proposed actuator shape optimization scheme.
The numerical model of the flow analysis by finite element technique is described. The Galerkin method is employed for spatial discretization Two step explicit finite element scheme is used to discretize the time function, which has advantage in problems treating large numbers of elements and unsteady state. Two dimensional hydrodynamic model considering moving boundary condition is developed. Also it applied flow model which develop on flow portion of ideal fluid in the model flume and verified, and the results of this study confirm the efficiency of moving boundary treatment in Jeju harbor. The computed results have shown the good adaptability of moving boundary condition From these studies, it can be concluded that the present method is a useful and effective tool in tidal flow analysis.

The wave-propagation phenomenon in an infinite medium has been used to describe the physics in many fields of engineering and natural science. Analytical or numerical methods have been developed to obtain solutions to problems related to the wave-propagation phenomenon. Energy radiation into infinite regions must be accurately considered for accurate solutions to these problems; hence, various numerical and mechanical models as well as boundary conditions have been developed. This paper proposes a new boundary condition that can be applied to scalar-wave or horizontally-polarized shear-wave (or SH-wave) propagation problems in layered waveguides. A governing equation is obtained for the SH waves by applying finite-element discretization in the vertical direction of the waveguide and subsequently modified to derive the boundary condition for the infinite region of the waveguide. Using the orthogonality of the eigenmodes for the SH waves in a layered waveguide, the new boundary condition is shown to be equivalent to the existing root-finding absorbing boundary condition; further, the accuracy is shown to increase with the degree of the new boundary condition, and its stability can be proven. The accuracy and stability are then demonstrated by applying the proposed boundary condition to wave-propagation problems in layered waveguides.

A Mixed Volume and Boundary Integral Equation Method is applied for the effective analysis of elastic wave scattering problems and plane elastostatic problems in unbounded solids containing general anisotropic inclusions and voids or isotropic inclusions. It should be noted that this newly developed numerical method does not require the Green's function for anisotropic inclusions to solve this class of problems since only Green's function for the unbounded isotropic matrix is involved in their formulation for the analysis. This new method can also be applied to general two-dimensional elastodynamic and elastostatic problems with arbitrary shapes and number of anisotropic inclusions and voids or isotropic inclusions. In the formulation of this method, the continuity condition at each interface is automatically satisfied, and in contrast to finite element methods, where the full domain needs to be discretized, this method requires discretization of the inclusions only. Finally, this method takes full advantage of the pre- and post-processing capabilities developed in FEM and BIEM. Through the analysis of plane elastostatic problems in unbounded isotropic matrix with orthotropic inclusions and voids or isotropic inclusions, and the analysis of plane wave scattering problems in unbounded isotropic matrix with isotropic inclusions and voids, it will be established that this new method is very accurate and effective for solving plane wave scattering problems and plane elastic problems in unbounded solids containing general anisotropic inclusions and voids/cracks or isotropic inclusions.
Here we demonstrate complex transient behavior of viscoelastic liquid described numerically with the Leonov model in straight and contraction channel flow domains. Finite element and implicit Euler time integration methods are employed for spatial discretization and time marching. In order to stabilize the computational procedure, the tensor-logarithmic formulation of the constitutive equation with SUPG and DEVSS algorithms is implemented. For completeness of numerical formulation, the so called traction boundaries are assigned for flow inlet and outlet boundaries. At the inlet, finite traction force in the flow direction with stress free condition is allocated whereas the traction free boundary is assigned at the outlet. The numerical result has illustrated severe forward-backward fluctuations of overall flow rate in inertial straight channel flow ultimately followed by steady state of forward flow. When the flow reversal occurs, the flow patterns exhibit quite complicated time variation of streamlines. In the inertialess flow, it takes much more time to reach the steady state in the contraction flow than in the straight pipe flow. Even in the inertialess case during startup contraction flow, quite distinctly altering flow patterns with the lapse of time have been observed such as appearing and vanishing of lip vortices, coexistence of multiple vortices at the contraction comer and their merging into one.
