There are currently about 6000 bacterial species with validly published names, but scientists assume that these may be less than 1% of bacterial species present on the earth. Microbial resource is one of the most important bioresources in bioinderstry and provides us with high economic values. To find missing ones, the studies of metagenome, metabolome, and proteome about microbes have started recently in developed countries. We construct the information system that integrates information on microbial genome resources and manages the information to support efficient research of microbial genome application, and name this system 'Bio-Meta Information System (Bio-MIS)'. Bio-MIS consists of integrated microbial genome resources database, microbial genome resources input system, integrated microbial genome resources search engine, microbial resources on-line distribution system, portal service and management via internet. In the future, we will include public database connection and implement useful bioinformatics software for analyzing microbial genome resources. The web-site is accessible at http://biomis.probionic.com
The bio-Sensors, which are sensing the vital signs of human bodies, are largely used by the medical equipment. Recently, the sensor network technology, which composes of the sensor interface for small-seize hardware, processor, the wireless communication module and battery in small sized hardware, has been extended to the area of bio-senor network systems due to the advances of the MEMS technology. In this paper we have suggested a design and implementation of a health care information system(called u-EMS) using a bio-sensor network technology that is a combination of the bio-sensor and the sensor network technology. In proposed system, we have used the following vital body sensors such as EKG sensor, the blood pressure sensor, the heart rate sensor, the pulse oximeter sensor and the glucose sensor. We have collected various vital sign data through the sensor network module and processed the data to implement a health care measurement system. Such measured data can be displayed by the wireless terminal(PDA, Cell phone) and the digital-frame display device. Finally, we have conducted a series of tests which considered both patient's vital sign and context-awared information in order to improve the effectiveness of the u-EMS.
In February 2022, the EU announced a draft of the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive requiring due diligence and disclosure of information on environmental and human rights risks in corporate supply chains. This study evaluated the ability of 13 Korean pharmaceutical/bio companies to respond to the EU's demand for due diligence in the supply chain and compared it to 13 globally leading pharmaceutical/bio companies which are considered good in environmental and human rights risk management. For comparative analysis, text mining analysis was performed using R. Basic word frequency and concurrent words were analyzed and topic modeling was performed by applying Latent Dirichlet Allocation. As a result of the analysis, it was found that compared to advanced companies, domestic pharmaceutical and bio companies lack negative issue reporting and identification systems and supply chain due diligence implementation processes, and require advancement of data management for environmental and human rights information disclosure. Accordingly, domestic pharmaceutical and bio companies need to prepare differentiated support measures to systematically identify and reduce risks in the supply chain of small and medium-sized businesses beyond simply providing financial support. It is also desirable for the government to provide policy support by mandating Korea's own supply chain environment and human rights due diligence system, along with support for strengthening the ability to respond to due diligence of domestic pharmaceutical and bio companies, such as expert consulting and financial support.
The prefix 'bio' with the meaning of 'life,' has been used for biotechnology, biochemistry, bioengineering, biomedicine, bioethics, bio-information as well as 'bio art' since 1990s. Bio art is an art as life itself and a kind of new direction in contemporary art that manipulates the processes of life. Bio artists use the properties of life and materials as scientists in laboratory of biology, and change organisms within their own species, of invents life with new characteristics. Technologically and socio-culturally, bio art has been connected with bioengineering. This essay is on the bio art that use vegetables, and on the specified gaze of so-called 'Sci-Artists.' Not only the genetically modified vegetables like works of George Gessert, Ackroyd & Harvey, and Eduardo Kac, but also the works made from the critical viewpoint like those of Paul Vanouse, Natalie Jeremijenko, and Amy Youngs, have 'the molecular gaze'(Suzanne Anker and Dorothy Nelkin's concept) of the genetic age in their art works. As the art history have showed, artists' gazes have insights about social problems that surround us. Bioartists' gazes reveal their insights about social and ethical problems, possibly concealed by science itself. Those problems are about results from practical discoveries of the sequencing of the genome, genetic engineering, cloning and reproduction of human and animals, body transformation, and the commercialization of cell and genes etc. We can find the significance of bioart in the molecular gaze about those problems, and we can rethink the identity of human, the reception of social influences from bio-technology and medicine.
With development of wearable devices, there is an increased interest in bio-signal monitoring techniques that can measure the user's health condition. However, embedding several bio-signal sensors in one wearable device has some inherent problems in terms of limited resources such as its size. Furthermore, such problem also arise when new bio-signal sensors are added. In this paper, we introduced the Bio-Cradle, which is a Plug-in module that can transfer the biological signals in real time from the accelerometer, ECG, or PPG sensor to other wearable devices at the request from the user of wearable devices. When the Bio-Cradle plugged in to the other device, it can transfer several synchronized bio-signals regardless of the type of device.

Colletotrichum acutatum is a species complex responsible for anthracnose disease in a wide range of host plants. Strain C. acutatum KC05, which was previously isolated from an infected pepper in Gangwon Province of South Korea, was reidentified as C. scovillei using combined sequence analyses of multiple genes. As a prerequisite for understanding the pathogenic development of the pepper anthracnose pathogen, we optimized the transformation system of C. scovillei KC05. Protoplast generation from young hyphae of KC05 was optimal in an enzymatic digestion using a combined treatment of 2% lysing enzyme and 0.8% driselase in 1 M NH4Cl for 3 h incubation. Prolonged incubation for more than 3 h decreased protoplast yields. Protoplast growth of KC05 was completely inhibited for 4 days on regeneration media containing 200 ㎍/ml hygromycin B, indicating the viability of this antibiotic as a selection marker. To evaluate transformation efficiency, we tested polyethylene glycol-mediated protoplast transformation of KC05 using 19 different loci found throughout 10 (of 27) scaffolds, covering approximately 84.1% of the entire genome. PCR screening showed that the average transformation efficiency was about 17.1% per 100 colonies. Southern blot analyses revealed that at least one transformant per locus had single copy integration of PCR-screened positive transformants. Our results provide valuable information for a functional genomics approach to the pepper anthracnose pathogen C. scovillei.

Since human genome project finished, the cost for human genome analysis has decreased very rapidly. This results in the sharp increase of human genome data to be analyzed. As the need for fast analysis of very large bio data such as human genome increases, non IT researchers such as biologists should be able to execute fast and effectively many kinds of bio applications, which have a variety of characteristics, under HPC environment. To accomplish this purpose, a biologist need to define a sequence of bio applications as workflow easily because generally bio applications should be combined and executed in some order. This bio workflow should be executed in the form of distributed and parallel computing by allocating computing resources efficiently under HPC cluster system. Through this kind of job, we can expect better performance and fast response time of very large bio data analysis. This paper proposes a workflow-based data analysis system specialized for bio applications. Using this system, non-IT scientists and researchers can analyze very large bio data easily under HPC environment.

Fisheries' biological resources were considered public resources before the 1990s. Every country could access and use these resources without regulation. However, the United Nations adopted the Convention on Biological Diversity and the privileges and rights to these resources were attributed to countries. This research starts with the research background and social and academic value of "The Jasan Eobo (or Report on Marine Organisms in the Coastal Waters near Heuksan Island)" by Jeong Yak-Jeon, who pioneered the new field of Fisheries Science and Marine Biology in Korea in the early 1800s. We also searched for recent results from the Marine Bio-Diversity Research Activities of the Korean National Council for Conservation of Nature (KNCCN) and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MOMAF). KNCCN reported that marine bio-diversity comprised approximately 6,500 species in 1996, and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries reported there were about 10,000 species in 2007. Among these marine species, plankton account for about 25%, seaweeds 11%, invertebrates 52%, and vertebrates 12% in Korean Coastal Areas. The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MIFAFF) enacted a law for Agriculture and Fisheries Resources Management in 2012; this law includes the preservation of marine ecosystems, the conservation of wetlands and the preservation of fisheries resources, and describes the boundary of taxonomy for new species and unknown species that could be identified in the near future. To follow the new regulation for Access to General Resources and Benefit-Sharing, this research suggests (1) the importance of taxonomy for new species and unknown species as a goal of "No Name = No Information", (2) integrated research on bio-diversity, species distributions and the abundance of fisheries resources, both in local areas and in Korean Coastal Areas, and (3) the observance of international regulations or agreements for benefit-sharing without additional damage in the future.

In this paper, the bio-signals, such as EEG, ECG were measured with a sensor and their characters were drawn out and analyzed. With results from the analysis, four emotion of rest, concentration, tension and depression were inferred. In order to assess one's emotion, the characteristic vectors were drawn out by applying various ways, including the frequency analysis of the bio-signals like the measured EEG and HRV. RBFN, a neural network of the complex structure of unsupervised and supervised learning, was applied to classify and infer the deducted information. Through experiments, the system suggested in this thesis showed better capability to classify and infer than other systems using a different neural network. As follow-up research tasks, the recognizance rate of the measured bio-signals should be improved. Also, the technology which can be applied to the wired or wireless sensor measuring the bio-signals more easily and to wearable computing should be developed.
Community-based precision farming is a new concept of agricultural systems, which leads to organize groups of wise farmers and technology platforms in Japan. The wisdom farmers create a rational farming system to manage hierarchical variability: variability in farmers' community as well as variability of within-field and between-field. The technology platform develops and provides three key-technologies: mapping technology, variable-rate technology, and decision support systems available for rural constraints. Advancement of bio-production robots leads precision farming to the next level, where two technological innovations: how to produce and manage information-oriented fields and information-added products, can be attained.
