The purpose of this study was the description of general trends in feeding, weaning and toilet training in agricultural and fishing communities in Korea, where the traditions are better preserved; thereby to present useful material for improving child rearing practices. The results of this study showed that: 1) Breast-feeding is the dominant form of nursing. The mother nurses freely whenever the baby wants to be fed. The mother caresses the baby while she nurses him. The nursing period is relatively long, up to 1 and a half years. 2) Generally, the time of weaning starts late - between 9 months and 18 months. Many mothers apply a bitter tasting solution to their nipples to aid weaning. The many things give a baby foods, the recipe for which the acquire knowledge from his family and acquaintances. 3) Toilet training generally starts after 1 full year. Potties are commonly used. The infant is reminded of its error whenever it makes a mistake and cleanliness is stressed. Urination and defecation are taught to be dirty things. In summary, discipline is not strict enforced but given naturally as the infants grow: This was interpreted in terms of the traditional way of life and geographical characteristics.
Purpose: This study aimed to explore the breast feeding process of mothers and to develop a grounded theory about experiences of breast feeding women. Methods: Data was collected by means of an in-depth interview from 8 participants who were breast feeding their baby. The data was analyzed using the grounded theory methodology proposed by Strauss and Corbin. Results: The core category was discovered to be 'becoming a mother'. This process was categorized into 5 stages; 'facing difficulties of breast feeding', 'having the will to continue to breast feed', 'doing one's best to breast feed', 'feeling satisfaction with one's breast feeding', and 'retaining a lingering desire for one's breast feeding'. Mothers began breast feeding without preparation. They faced difficult problems during breast feeding such as getting a lay-person's or professional person's support. They made various efforts for continuing to breast feed and solve the problems. They got pleasure from breast feeding, their baby is fine, and they have a bond with their baby. Finally, when they finished breast feeding, they still felt attached to it and had regrets. Conclusion: This study provided the information about mothers' experiences in the breast feeding process. Therefore, nurses will be able to utilize successful adaptation skills for helping breast feeding mothers.
Purpose: This study was performed to identify the experience of becoming a father of a high risk premature infant. Methods: Grounded theory was used for this research. The participants were 12 fathers who had premature infants lighter than 2,500g of birth weight, less than 37 weeks of gestational age and having stayed 2 weeks or longer in a NICU right after birth. Theoretical sampling was done to identify participants and indepth interviews were done for the data collection. For data analysis, the process suggested by Corbin and Strauss was used. Results: For these participants the core phenomenon of the experience of becoming a father of a high risk premature infant was 'striving through with belief and patience'. The phenomenon was 'being frustrated in an unrealistic shock'. Contextual conditions were 'uncertainty in the health status of the premature baby' and 'no one to ask for help' and intervening conditions were 'possibility in the health recovery of the premature baby' and 'assistance from significant others'. Action/interaction strategies were 'withstanding with belief in the baby' and 'enduring with willpower as head of the family' and the consequence was 'becoming a guardian of the family'. Conclusion: For the participants, the process of becoming the father of a high risk premature infant was striving through the situation with belief in their babies' ability to overcome the crisis and waiting for the babies' recovery with patience.
Recently we operated on two cases of PDA in premature infant. In both cases, indomethacin therapy had failed to close the PDA. The extremely small baby(body weight 540gm) died 28hrs postoperatively by unexpe ted intrathoracic bleeding probably due to coagulopathy related to septic condition and thrombocytopenia. The clinical course of the second case(body weight 1395gm) was complicated by ileal perforation sec- ondary to necrotizing enterocolitis. The baby underwent segmental resection of ileum with ileostomy on the 8th hospital day. On the 34th hospital day surgical closure of the PDA was done and the ile'ostomy was repaired simultaneously. Ventilator weaning was possible on the postoperative 6th day. The baby discharged on the postoperative 33th day with the body weight of 2050gm.
A survey was carried out to investigate the breastfeeding knowledge, breastfeeding rates ultra related factors among women in Seoul and the Chungbuk area, in order to obtain baseline data for the development of an education program on breastfeeding. Subjects included 671 lactating mothers who visited public health or pediatric centers, between December, 1999 and February, 2000 and were interviewed using a questionnaire. The results are as follows: In the breastfeeding knowledge, most of the subjects (93.4%) know correctly that 'breastfeeding is better for a baby's emotional development than formula feeding,'whereas only half of the subjects (51.7%) answered correctly the question on whether 'formula is more nutritious than breastmilk.'The breastfeeding rates were about 57%, 40%, 33% and 12%, respectively for baby's aged 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. These results showed that the breastfeeding rate rapidly decreased with the baby's age. Lower breastfeeding rates were associated with high educational level (college graduate and above), high income, mothers'employment, no experience of attending breastfeeding education programs, and no planning on breastfeeding prior to pregnancy. There was a significant relationship between the level of knowledge and breastfeeding practice; the higher the knowledge score, the higher the breastfeeding rate. In conclusion, an education program should be developed and offered for each low breastfeeding rate group, in order to promote breastfeeding.
Using three dimensional finite element model of the human brain, vibratory characteristics of the human brain according to vibratory direction was analyzed. From this analysis 9, 14Hz and 2, 3Hz natural frequencies were calculated for adult's and baby's brain model respectively. Regardless of the vibratory direction relatively high shear stress, pressure and von Mises stress variation except acceleration were detected in the baby brain model. At each natural frequencies, adult's model showed relatively high stress level in the region of lower limb control area compared with upper limb control area at 14Hz natural frequency.
The purpose of this study was to identify the pattern and perception of food consumption, mass restaurant use, drinking style, and food purchasing factors by cohort groups i. e., World Cup(W) generation, baby boom, and silent generation. Data were collected from 412 respondents including three generations by questionnaire method in April through May 2002. Analysis of variance and chi-square results indicate that there were significant differences among three generation groups for the pattern and perception of food consumption, the use of mass restaurant, preferred drinking style, and influencing factors for food purchasing. W generation are more likely to be influenced by sensibility factor than baby boom and silent generation. Considering food preference pattern, baby boom as well as silent generation prefer green vegetables than meats, and they must have Kimche when having meals. Similarities and differences in perceptional pattern types are discussed, and future implications for food and nutrition specialists and food marketers are provided.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify patterns and trends of studies, analyze the research, and improve direction of nursing research related to the neonatal pain relief intervention in Korea. Method: The studies were selected from dissertation, nursing journals and others in Korea. Result: Until 1995, there were no studies related to the neonatal pain relief intervention. The most studies have been increased rapidly after 2005. Pure of true experimental design of research design was used 5, Quasi experimental design was 7, preexperimental design was 7. Participants were preterm baby was 8, full-term baby was 9, and preterm and full-term baby was 2. Utilization of instruments as follows: NIPS, PIPP, ABSS, NFCS, pulse oximeter, EKG monitoring, and stethoscope. Contents of the research studies were classified 4 different types, such as studies of about the effect of auditory stimulation, taste stimulation, tactile stimulation, and topical anesthetic cream. The results of 25 studies were effective for the neonatal pain relief, but the results of 5 studies weren't. Conclusion: In the future studies need to develop the various instrument which is assessment of neonatal pain. It is important to the integrated by meta analysis. Additionally, we should develop protocol nursing intervention for the effective pain release.
Purpose - This study aims to examine differences in donation behavior as surrogates of prosocial consumption behavior among three generation types. Further, it attempts to examine the moderator roles that affect donation behavior influenced by the difference in generations. Research design, data, and methodology - This study used the statistical ANOVA technique to examine generational difference. Surveys were structured differently by ages, as 20th, 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th, and 70th to classify generations into each group. A survey to measure the psychological distance was performed to identify whether the respondents intended to donate to a domestic or overseas target. Results - First, subjective judgment of psychological distance has no effect on objective donation behavior. Second, though the result of the relationship with moral identity is not statistically significant, it provides evidence that a higher moral identity level possesses more donation behavior. Further, groups with higher symbolization tend to donate more than the others. This was especially evident among the young and baby boomer generation. Conclusion - This empirical study suggests that marketers need to differentiate the market segment of the baby-boomer generation with high purchasing power of prosocial consumption.
This study is on the children's clothing in Seoul Gyeonggi-do, Chungcheong-do and Gangwon-do between the $1920s{\sim}1950s$, by comparing positive data collected from pictures and literatures, remains and interviews. A baenaet jeogori was made of soft white cotton fabrics and was used as a charm when the baby had grown and had an test or a big occasion. A dureong chima and pungcha trousers were clothes for both boys and girls from their birth to the age of $4{\sim}5$ when they could have bowel movements by themselves. Occasions for celebrating a baby's growth were the one-hundredth day and the first birthday. In general, ordinary families had their babies' one-hundredth day in a simple way without special clothes. On the first birthday, however, even ordinary families prepared new clothes for their babies, and read their fortune and prayed for their well being and long life through events such as doljabi. In the age when medicine was poor and the infant mortality was high, the meaning of such a ceremony was to congratulate on the baby's safe growth through dangerous moments.
