  • The purpose of this study was to examine whether senior simulation would bring any positive change to the attitude of dental hygiene students toward the elderly. The experimental group consisted of 58 dental hygiene students at a college. The experimental procedure was to do activities for 40 minutes wearing aging simulation suit. Self administered questionnaires were used to ask the attitude toward the elderly after senior simulation. The data were analyzed with SPSS program. General and aging related characteristics of subjects were analyzed through descriptive statistics. To testify the differences of the attitude after senior simulation, paired t-test was used. An experiment was conducted from May 27 to June 14, 2012, and the findings of the study were as follows: 1. There wasn't any perfect positive change in the overall attitude of the students toward elderly people after senior simulation, but their attitude got a little more positive whereas they took a neutral attitude in the past; 2. The students who had ever lived with elderly people under the same roof and who had ever received education related to the elderly underwent a more positive change in their attitude toward the elderly; 3. To what extent senior simulation was helpful for the understanding of the elderly was checked, and the majority replied that it was very useful or useful for the understanding of their physical aspects. The findings of the study confirmed that senior simulation didn't change the overall attitude of the students toward the elderly in a positive way yet brought about some positive changes in part. Therefore senior simulation is expected to be one of significant educational programs that could encourage students to have a better physical understanding of the elderly, to take a more positive attitude to them and to provide them with quality dental service.

The attitudes toward the elderly was scored by the use of mean and standard deviation. The relations between attitudes toward the elderly and six independent vairables were analysed by T-test. The results which were obtained are as follows : 1. The attitude score of nursing students was M=71.67 S.D= 16.18. Nursing students agreed with 54.8% of the stereotypic statements, and they had stereotypic attitudes toward the elderly relatively. (P<0.01). 2. There was a significant difference between the attitudes of nursing students toward the elderly, and sophomores had a less stereotypic attitudes than juniors and seniors (P<0.01). 3. There was significant difference between the attitudes toward the elderly and the preferences for various fields of specialization in nursing after graduation, and nursing students those who wanted maternity fields had a more stereotypic attitudes than others (P<0.05, p<0.01). 4. There was no significant difference between the attitudes toward the elderly and the clinical experience with the geriatric patients (P>0.05). 5. There was no significant difference between the attitude3 toward the elderly and the personal experience with elderly family members (F>0.05). 6. There was no significant difference between the attitudes toward the elderly and the educational experience of the elderly's health problems and geriatric nursing (P>0.05). 7. • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between nursing students' level of knowledge of and attitude toward the elderly and their behavior towards the elderly. Methods: For this study, 223 nursing students participated. The data was analyzed with PASW statistics program version 18.0 using descriptive statistics, a t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis. Results: The findings of the study displayed a score of 14.5 out of 25 for the level of knowledge of the elderly, a score of 3.9 out of 7 on the attitude toward the elderly, and 1.3 points on a 4-point scale on behavior towards the elderly. There was a positive correlation (r=.410, p<.001) between attitude and behavior towards the elderly, thus confirming that attitude towards the elderly influences behavior towards them. Conclusion: The most influential variable on the behavior towards the elderly emerged to be attitude. Thus, although knowledge and attitude cannot be neglected in manifesting positive behaviors in nursing students when they care for the elderly, knowledge training and elderly nursing practical sessions need to take place in order to strengthen attitude, which displayed a positive correlation with behavior.
