The interest and importance of appearance can be expanded by changes in social awareness about appearance, the extension of life expectancy, and the development of science, technology and technology and medicine. Especially, down-aging syndrome through a variety of mediums, amplifies consumer's interest in youth-pursing. This study discusses the relationship of youth-pursuing, appearance concern and appearance management behavior focused on the middle-aged. Data were collected from 300 females aged 40-65 in the areas of Seoul, Daejeon and Chungbuk areas. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, factor analysis, regression analysis, using the SPSS-WIN 20.0 program. Youth-pursuing formed social, psychological, and appearance factors. Each of these three dimensions influenced the appearance concern; consequently, appearance had the highest influence. Only appearance influenced appearance management behavior in the regression analysis of youth-pursuing and appearance management behavior. Appearance concern affected significantly appearance in the management behavior of the dimension regression analysis results for the appearance concern and appearance management behavior.
This study aims at examining how male college students' extent of mass media exposure affects their sociocultural attitude toward appearance and appearance orientation. It also investigates how these variables show difference depending on the individual's self-efficacy. For the study, data were collected from 397 male students by means of stratified random sampling. The results are as follows: 1. Male college students 'sociocultural attitude toward appearance was shown in two factors of appearance internalization and appearance awareness. Appearance orientation was shown in two factors of interest in appearance and interest in body weight. 2. Male college students were exposed to mass media in order of videos, movies, TV entertainment shows, music and movie magazines. The influence of video media was strong. 3. Male college students' extent of mass media exposure exerted indirect influence through sociocultural attitude toward appearance rather than exerting direct influence on appearance orientation. 4. Male college students' appearance orientation varied depending on the extent of self-efficacy, and higher self-efficacy showed higher appearance orientation and appearance attitude. Especially the group with higher self-efficacy showed higher appearance attitude when the extent of exposure to mass media increased.
This study examines the significant relations in clothing behavior according to perceptual body image and appearance management behavior. The sampling method was a convenient sampling of 190 male and 160 female students in Daejeon. The survey was conducted from June to July 2008. The instruments consisted of perceptual body image (Silhouette Task), appearance management behavior (need for plastic surgery and appearance management in ordinary times) and clothing behavior (interest in clothing and fashion, along with conformity and exhibition). The data were analyzed using the frequency analysis, $Cronbach'{\alpha}$, factor analysis, t-test, and variance analysis. The subjects with normal body size perceptions had a strong need for plastic surgery, revealed more appearance management behavior, and had a high interest in clothing. The subjects who were dissatisfied with body apperance showed high conformity to clothing. The subjects who dissatisfied to their too fat body had high needs for plastic surgery and the subjects dissatisfied with a too thin body type did less appearance management in ordinary times. The subjects who had a high need for plastic surgery performed more appearance management, had a high interest in clothing and fashion, showed a high conformity to clothing, and exhibited a high exhibition of clothing. The subjects who had more appearance management in ordinary times had a high interest in clothing and fashion and showed a high conformity and exhibition of clothing.
This study aims to examine the difference of body image and psychological well-being of men and women according to appearance management. The subjects of the study were 673 college students who lived in Seoul and metropolitan areas. Statistical analyses used in the study were factor analysis, Cronbach's a, cluster analysis, ANOVA, Duncan test and $\chi^2-test$. The results of this study were as follows; 1. The body image was categorized into the three factors of personal interest innce, anxiety about weight and physical attraction. Appearance management was categorized into the appearance management through clothing, strict diet therapy and daily appearance management. The psychological well-being was classified as seven factors which include the life goal, self-acceptance, positive personal relations, self-regulation, personal development, environment control and responsibility. 2. The appearance management was classified by 4 groups as below: Daily appearance management group, strict diet therapy group, appearance management through clothing group and no interest in appearance group. 3. There were significant differences among the four groups regarding body image, psychological well-being and life satisfaction. First, appearance management through clothing group had more interest in appearance than other groups. In the case of weight awareness, strict diet therapy group and the appearance management through clothing group intended to have more concerns over their weight. The strict diet therapy group seemed to have an overall lower level of psychological well-being than other groups. Lastly, the appearance management through clothing group had a higher level of life satisfaction.
The object of this study was to find out the influence of juvenile self-consciousness on the importance of unit 'clothing and self-express' in technology home economics curriculum and appearance management behavior. Questionnaires were administered to 244 middle school students living in Deagu metropolitan City. Frequency, factor analysis, reliability analysis, regression analysis, and ${\chi}^2-test$ were used for data analysis. Our findings are as follows. Self-consciousness had factors as privately and socially self-consciousness and social anxiety. The factors of the importance of unit 'Clothing and self-express' were clothing, self-express and excellence in traditional clothing. Appearance management behavior had factors as appearance management, plastic surgery interest, diet importance, health focus and eating habit. Self-consciousness was found to have significant effects on the factors of the importance of unit 'Clothing and self-express', and self-consciousness on factors of appearance management behavior. The differences by gender of middle students was examined in clothing and textile interest, clothing and textile unit interest and knowledge acquisition route.
The objectives of this study were to classify daily clothing selection motives and to group men into life style types and to examine the differences in daily clothing selection motives according to the life style types. Questionnaire comprised of three sections: 36 Likert type items of life style measure; 29 Likert type items of daily clothing selection motives measure: and 4 demographic variables. Samples were 267 salary men in gheir 20's to 30's in Seoul Korea. The data were analyzed using factor analy-sis cluster analysis one-way ANOVA Dun-can's multiple range test and t-test. 1. 'positive activity' F. 3 'economy oriented': F.4 'active-leisure';F. 5 'contemporary' Four types of life style of men were defined by cluster analysis of the five factors: T. 1'posi-tive activity'; T. 2.'economy interest'; T. 3'contemporary' : T 2'economy interest' T.3'contemporary' ; T. 4 'appearance interest' 2. Four factors of daily clothing selection motives were derived by factor analysis: F.1 'clothing harmony'; F.2 'clothing utility'; F.3 'psychological influence'; F.4 'exogenous situ-ation adaptation 3. There were significant differences in daily clothing selection motives according to the life style types. The types of positive activity economy interest and contemporary had 'clothing utility' motive more than appearance interest type. Economy interest type had 'hpsychological influence' motive more than other three types. Economy interest type and appearance interest type had 'exogenous situ-ation adaptation' motive more than other two types 4. 20's and unmarried men had'psychological influence' motive more than 30's and married. Upper class had 'clothing harmony' and 'ex-ogeneous situation adaptation' motives more than middle and low. Men with less education had ' clothing utility' and 'exogenous situation adaptation' motives more than did more edu-cation.
In the past, generally only woman have interest in appearance management, but nowadays man also have interest in beauty and appearance. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of vanity scale on the appearance management behavior and fashion orientation in male consumers. The data was collected from men in their age of 20-59, who lived in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. A total of 300 responses were analyzed. Factor analysis, frequency analysis, ANOVA and regression were used for analysis. The results of this study are as follows. First, vanity scale divided into four factors 1) a concern for physical appearance 2) a positive view of physical appearance 3) a concern for achievement and 4) a positive view of achievement. Generally concern factors are higher than positive views, and physical appearance factors are higher than achievement factors. Second, four lower vanity scale factors are related with each other. Third, various vanity scale influenced to appearance management behavior and fashion orientation. Especially positive view of achievement have more influencing power to appearance management behavior and fashion orientation. Among various demographic variables, income have more influencing power to the vanity scale.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the difference in body image and apparel fashion orientation according to gender and somatotype. And the paths for the apparel fashion orientation affected by these variables were also analyzed. The data for this research were collected from questionnaires of 210 male and 180 female college students. The results of this research are as follows: It was found that subjective somatotypes of male and female college students were different from objective somatotypes and that female college students showed high degree of somatotype distortion compared to male college students. The body image was composed of three factors, interest in appearance', concern about weight' and satisfaction in appearance'. Female college students were highly interested in appearance and weight with exhibiting high interest in appearance for the persons who have a thin somatotype and in weight for the persons who have an obesity somatotype, respectively. Female college students were more closely associated with fashion than male students. The higher interest in appearance, concern about weight and satisfaction in appearance persons have, the higher degree of leadership in fashion opinion, fashion innovativeness and confidence in apparel the persons showed. Thus, female students, thin somatotypical persons or standard somatotypical persons were highly interested in appearance. The persons who are more concerned about appearance showed the high degree of leadership in fashion opinion, fashion innovativeness and confidence in apparel. And the persons who are satisfied with their appearance exhibited high leadership in fashion opinion and confidence in apparel.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between Perception of self anp Clothing Interest, and to determine the difference of Clothing interest and Perception of self by the demographic variables. Perception of self was measured with Perception of self test from Choi's Perceptual Orientation Scale. Appearance, Clothing comfort, Fashion, Psychological dependence, Clothing economics were measured with items from Gurel's Study and Creekmore's for method of measuring clothing variables, items were drawn from preceding measures and, slightly modified. The three groups classified, by Perception of self were Positively Correlated to Appearance, Fashion and Psychological dependence. 2. There was partially significant difference between clothing interest and demographic variables. Education and socioeconomic status affected Psychological dependence. Demographic variables not affected Clothing comfort. 3. There was partially significant difference between Perception of self and demographic variables. Age, education, marital status and socioeconomic status affected Perception of Self. 4. There was partially significant relationships among subscales of the Clothing interest. Appearance was positively correlated to clothing comfort, Fashion and Psychological dependence, clothing comfort was positively correlated to Appearance, Psychological dependence. Fashion was positively correlated to Appearance, Clothing comfort and, Psychological dependence.
