  • The present longitudinal study examined reciprocal influence between self-esteem and academic achievement using cross-lagged autoregressive model. This study employed data(four wave) from Korea Youth Panel Survey. Participants were 300 students(143 boys, 157 girls) who were 4th graders in 2004 and 7th graders in 2007. The results of this study indicated that 4th graders' self-esteem influenced 5th graders' academic achievement, in turn, 5th graders' academic achievement influenced 6th graders' self-esteem. However, students' self-esteem in 6th grade did not influence their academic achievement during 7th grade. Conversely, 6th graders' academic achievement influenced 7th graders' self-esteem.

  • The purpose of the present study was to test the impact of depression on mobile phone dependency among elementary school students, to test the mediating effect of self-esteem between depression and mobile phone dependency, and to draw out theoretical and practical implications in terms of preventing or reducing mobile phone dependency. Based on previous studies, a longitudinal research model between the aforementioned three variables has been identified. The present study analyzed the 4th, 5th, and 6th wave data from Korea Children and Youth Panel Study 2010 (KCYPS 2010). The major results were as follows. First, depression could have a significant negative effect on self-esteem. Second, self-esteem could have a significant negative effect on mobile phone dependency. Third, the influence of depression on mobile phone dependency was not significant. Fourth, gender could be a significant moderating variable between depression and self-esteem. Finally, a number of implications of these findings were also discussed.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify the longitudinal relationship between child maltreatment and adolescent suicidal ideation. Several studies suggest that child maltreatment is associated with adolescent suicidal ideation. However, these studies have not focused on the duration of child maltreatment. Methods: Participants were 420 adolescents (52.6% male; 47.4% female) involved in the Korea Welfare Panel Study. Data were collected via youth self-report in 2006, 2009, and 2012. A self-report assessment of children and youths' experiences of physical, emotional, or neglect had been surveyed longitudinally. Questionnaires on adolescent suicidal ideation were answered in 2012. A growth mixture model and multiple regression were conducted using Mplus 5.21. Results: The study results showed that 93.5% of the children had experienced no maltreatment; 6.5% had experienced increasing maltreatment longitudinally. The trajectory of increasing maltreatment was positively associated with adolescent suicidal ideation. Conclusion: These results show that children suffering from chronic maltreatment are subject to a high risk of suicide and therefore require continuous supervision and management.

  • This thesis attempts to provide a foundation for effective preventative education of middle school students regarding school violence after identifying the level of perception of school violence as well as analyzing perception of preventive education among students. The study compiled data on 474 middle school students from middle schools in Jeollanamdo. The findings of the study are as follows. First, most of the students were aware of the necessity for preventive education regarding school violence. By gender, girls and those of lower grades showed great class participation and satisfaction. Second, research on the preventive education found differences in the seriousness of school violence according to school location. Fourth, preventive education conducted once or twice a month was the most desirable condition for middle school students. As a result, schools should consider gender differences and grade level when, developing an education program in order to prevent school violence.

  • Modern society has become an aging society, and the National Statistics Office(NSO) expects that Korea will be also an aging society by 2019, that is, people over the age of 65 will account for 14 percent from the total population. In addition, the increase of labor flexibility is also one of the dramatic features in modern society. However, this social shift have unpredictable results, that is, the advent and increase of grandparent and grandchildren family. Modern medical technology has given Koreans longer expectancies, and structural and economic changes in society have brought early retirement. One of the main reasons that grandparent and grandchildren family increase is below an average of two children per family. There are various services available such as Health support center, Dream start center, Youth support center, Community child center, and Community welfare center. Besides, schools operates various programs for grandparent and grandchildren family with social workers and school counselors. But, most of all, what is necessary is a change of perspective on them. Basically, we need to develop a clear perspective on grandparent and grandchildren family as a not dismantling family type but alternative family type with creating a separate program or service

  • This study was based on the 'Escape Theory' model suggested by Baumeister(1990). Based on this analysis framework, this study attempted to examine that complicated direct and indirect effect of school risk factors(risk of academic scores, risk of relation with teacher and risk of peer relation) on suicide ideation in adolescence, through negative self-esteem, depression and withdrawal coping. To this end, this study used the data from the '2008 Gyeongsangbuk-Do youth crisis survey' conducted by the Youth service center in province of Gyeongsangbuk-Do. The target number of this study was 2,335 students in the age group of middle school and high school. The result of the Analysis indicate that risk of relation with teacher among school risk factors was only one which affected directly and indirectly on suicide ideation. The other side, risk of academic scores and risk of peer relation had indirect effects, via negative self-esteem, depression and withdrawal coping. In conclusion, this study confirmed that school risk factors had effects on suicide ideation directly or indirectly, they were complicatedly connected, through negative self-esteem, depression and withdrawal coping. Therefore, Prevention program for adolescence' suicide ideation or suicide risk require integrated strategies and tactics.

  • This paper designed a mediating pathways model on how parental abuse and peer victimization lead to the development of suicidal ideation through the mediating variables of interpersonal needs and a hopelessness. The development is sure to help reduce adolescent suicidal ideation and, in turn, seek for distinct mediating methods to help teens with suicidal ideas. To validate the suggested model, this paper administered a questionnaire to 768 students in their 10th, 11th and 12th grades of high schools in Incheon, and then analyzed the structural equation model before confirming the research hypothesis by adopting the tools of SPSS 17.0 and AMOS 18.0. The result clearly demonstrates that parental abuse is one of the most influential factors in developing suicidal ideation. Peer victimization, however, had no direct bearing on suicide ideation, only indirectly affecting through the mediating variable of interpersonal needs. In addition, peer victimization had indirect effects on suicidal ideation through a sequential intervention of variables from interpersonal needs to a hopelessness. Based on the above results, this research has following implications: First, this paper analyzed the mediating pathways of youth suicidal ideation resulting from parental abuse and peer victimization. The result could possibly help find preventive measures and effective mediating approaches to save the lives of young people at risk of committing suicide. Secondly, this study proved that the interpersonal needs, a relatively new concept hardly introduced in previous studies, is a significant predictive factor for suicide ideation, serving as an intervening variable of developing suicidal ideation among young people who have suffered parental abuse and peer victimization.

  • School adjustment has been a popular topic among scholars in multicultural family studies, and they commonly report poor adjustment of children from multicultural families. However, without subjects for comparison, these findings may be considered premature. This study investigated school adjustment of children from multicultural families by comparing their adjustment level to that of children from families with Korean parents. By using the matching procedure, this study examined whether children's multicultural family background attributes to their school adjustment with children's observable characteristics paired and matched. For the analyses, the first and fourth wave of Korean Children and Youth Panel Study data were used. When the school adjustment level was examined before the matching procedure, the school adjustment level was indeed lower among children of multicultural families, and their family status was a significant predictor of school adjustment. However, when two groups were paired and matched using matching, the family background had no significant effect, indicating that school adjustment is not predicted by their multicultural family status. Implications for research and practice are also discussed in the paper.
