  • AC loss is an important factor in the development of superconducting tapes and superconducting power applications. In this paper, magnetization loss in YBCO coated conductor have been measured and compared with Brandt equation. Measurements of magnetization loss were performed under various angles of external magnetic field to consider the anisotropic characteristics of YBCO coated conductors. The results show that measured values of magnetization loss agreed well with the calculated value by using Brandt equation, especially at large degrees of incidence angle. The magnetization losses were strongly influenced by the direction of external magnet field as were expected.

  • The slot-die coating & calcination process was adopted to fabricate the long YBCO precursor films on the buffered metal tape for the $2^{nd}$ generation coated conductors. To obtain the smooth and crack-free surface of long YBCO precursor films, the parameters of slot-die coating and the process variables of calcination step must be optimized simultaneously in reel-to-reel method. Among the parameter of slot-die coating process, the viscosities of the precursor solution was controlled from 60cP to 200cP to obtain the thicker films from on single coating. The slot-die gap, the injection rate of precursor solution, the moving speed of buffered metal tape etc. are controlled lot the full coverage and smooth surface of YBCO precursor films. The slot-die coated films are moved through the tube furnace with predetermined heating profiles in humid oxygen ambient The YBCO precursor films was identifed with $Y_2O_3,\;BaF_2$, and CuO phase by XRD and consisted of fine grains of about 20nm size observed by FE-SEM. The YBCO films show the critical current density over $MA/cm^2$ using the precursor films formed by the continuous slot-die coating & calcination process.

  • CeO$_2$ and NiO buffers for YBCO coated conductors were deposited on biaxially textured Ni substrate by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition(MOCVD) and the deposition behavior were investigated. The degree of texture of deposited CeO$_2$ and NiO films was strongly dependent on the deposition temperature(T$\sub$d/) and oxygen partial pressure(P$\sub$O$_2$/). ($\ell$00) textured films were well deposited at specific deposition temperatures and oxygen partial pressures. The in-plane and out of plane textures estimated form the full width half maximum of the pole figure peaks were less than 10$^{\circ}$. The surface morphology showed that the CeO$_2$ films consisted of columnar grains grown normal to the Ni substrates, while NiO films were slate and clean like a mirror. The surface roughness of both films estimated by atomic force microscopy(AFM) were as smooth as 3-10 m. The growth rate of the films is much faster than that of other physical deposition methods.

  • YBCO coated conductors have been fabricated by the reel-to-reel processing using TFA-MOD method. In this work, the fluorine-free Y & Cu precursor solution was synthesized to shorten the calcining time by reducing the evolution of HF gas, thus the meter-long YBCO precursor films can be made within few hours by the continuous slot-die coating & calcination step using the F-free Y & Cu precursor solution. The annealing step was followed to make the YBCO films by the reel-to-reel method with the vertical gas flow system onto the moving tape. To increase the growth rate of the YBCO films by enhancing the removal of HF gas, the low total pressure was adopted in the annealing processing. And the water partial pressure and the oxygen partial pressure were varied to optimize the growth conditions of the MOD-YBCO films on the buffered metal tape. FE-SEM and XRD were used to investigate the surface morphologies and the texture of the meter-long YBCO films. The end-to-end critical current $(I_c)$ of 63A/cm-width and the critical current density $(J_c)$of $0.9MA/cm^2$ with the thickness of $0.7{\mu}m$ were obtained in the 0.42m long coated conductor.

  • Low temperature scanning laser microscopy (LTSLM) can be used for a two-dimensional display of bolometric response arising from the localized excitation of a sample by the focused laser beam. In this study, the distribution of critical temperature ($T_c$) and critical current density ($J_c$) in YBCO coated conductor were analyzed using LTSLM. For improving the temperature stability, we have modified the system into a double-shielding type. Through the modification, the temperature stability was successfully improved from ${\pm}10mK\;to\;{\pm}2mK$. The superconducting properties of YBCO coated conductors were measured for the sample of a narrow bridge type using wet etching process. The spatial non-uniformity of the ac voltage response, ${\delta}V(x)$, which is proportional to ${\partial}\rho(x,J_B)/{\partial}T$ in the transition temperature region could be observed and displayed in a two-dimensional image.

  • Since a stabilizer of YBCO coated conductor (CC) plays a very important role of bypassing over-current and transferring heat generated in the moment of fault, it is one of big issues to determine the material of the stabilizer and its dimension for the high performance of the HTS power application system. Especially, in the case of a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL), which requires it to react immediately to the occurrence of fault, characteristics of stabilizer are decisive in limiting fault current and recovering superconducting properties during and after quenching. In this paper, the quench / recovery characteristics of YBCO CCs with various thickness of stabilizer were analyzed. The quench/recovery test carried out at 20 $V_{rms}$, 5 cycles (60 Hz) and results showed that as the thickness of the stabilizer decreased, both the final approach temperature and the recovery time decreased.

  • We report the results of MOD-processed YBCO coated conductors on the IBAD-MgO template. The precursor solution was coated on the $CeO_2-buffered$ IBAD-MgO template using a slot-die coating method, calcined at a temperature of $550^{\circ}C$, and fired at high temperatures for 2.5 h in a reduced oxygen atmosphere. The $J_C$ value of YBCO coated conductors was found to be very sensitive to the microstructure, and thus higher $J_C$ value could be achieved when the in-plane texture was higher and the difference in $T_{C,zero}$. was negligible. Optimally processed YBCO coated conductor exhibited $J_C$ value of $0.75MA/cm^2$ at 77 K in self-field, which might be due to somewhat depressed $T_{C,zero}$ of 87.3 K caused by possible $Sm^{3+}$ substitution on the $Ba^{2+}$ site.
