  • We proposed a probabilistic approach of using syllable bigrams to the word-spacing problem. Syllable bigrams are extracted and the frequencies are calculated for the large corpus of 12 million words. Based on the syllable bigrams, we performed three experiments: (1) automatic word-spacing, (2) detection and correction of word-spacing errors for spelling checker, and (3) automatic insertion of a space at the end of line in the character recognition system. Experimental results show that the accuracy ratios are 97.7 percent, 82.1 percent, and 90.5%, respectively.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine what errors students made in solving word problems with figures and to compare the problem-solving abilities of boys and girls for each type of word problems with figures. It's basically meant to provide information on effective teaching-learning methods about world problems with figures that were given the greatest weight among different sorts of word problems. The findings of the study were as fellows: First, there was no difference between the boys and girls in the types of error they made. Both groups made the most errors due to a poor understanding of sentences, and they made the least errors of making the wrong expression. And the students who gave no answers outnumbered those who made errors. Second, as for problem-solving ability, the boys outperformed the girls in problem solving except variable problems. There was the greatest gap between the two in solving combining problems. Third, they made the average or higher achievement in solving the types of problems that were included much in the textbooks, and made the least achievement in relation to the types of problems that were handled least often in the textbooks.

  • Many students feel the word problems are very difficult. This study analyzes the linguistic and cognitive factors that affect word problem solving so that we help students bring through the difficulty. There are a text base, a situation model, and a real world in the linguistic aspects. Students have a difficulty at the transition from text base to situation model(equation), and make lots of errors at the situation model. In the cognitive aspects, I investigated problem solving schemes, strategies, and complexity level. Students are likely to choose strategy by the contents which teacher instructed, but not by low complexity level, and mix up the amount of sugar and sugar water, and concentration. We can recognize how complex the types of word problems are to solve, which strategies students choose largely, and what errors that students make in the problem solving are.

  • Fraction division is the content that is important but difficult to learn because it includes the process of finding a numerical expression in the real-world context, the process of making a context that matches a numerical expression, how to solve division, and the justification of standard algorithm. This study analyzes the word problems and problem solving methods about fraction division which elementary pre-service teachers represented. Pre-service teachers have more difficulty in making word problem where the dividend is less than the divisor and they also show typical errors in making the word problems. There were differences in the methods presented according to the contexts of division in problem solving. Through this study, it is necessary to rethink the teaching methods for fraction division instruction in the curriculum for pre-service teachers and analyze the formation process of 'knowledge for content and teaching' because of the differences in responses between grades.

  • Recent research has documented that there is a close relationship between problem posing and problem solving in arithmetic. However, most studies investigated the relationship between problem posing and problem solving only by means of standard problem situations. In order to overcome that shortcoming, a pilot study with Chinese fourth-graders was done to investigate this relationship using a non-standard, realistic problem situation. The results revealed a significant positive relationship between students' problem posing and solving abilities. Based on that pilot study, a more extensive and systematic ascertaining study was carried out to confirm the observed relationship between problem posing and problem solving among Chinese elementary school children. Results confirmed that there was indeed a close relationship between both skills.

  • The purpose of this study is to see possibility of Char2Vec as alternative of Word2Vec that most famous word embedding model in Sentence Similarity Measure Problem by Deep-Learning. In experiment, we used the Siamese Ma-LSTM recurrent neural network architecture for measure similarity two random sentences. Siamese Ma-LSTM model was implemented with tensorflow. We train each model with 200 epoch on gpu environment and it took about 20 hours. Then we compared Word2Vec based model training result with Char2Vec based model training result. as a result, model of based with Char2Vec that initialized random weight record 75.1% validation dataset accuracy and model of based with Word2Vec that pretrained with 3 million words and phrase record 71.6% validation dataset accuracy. so Char2Vec is suitable alternate of Word2Vec to optimize high system memory requirements problem.

  • Natural texts are analyzed to obtain their intended meaning to be classified depending on the problem under study. One way to represent words is by generating vectors of real values to encode the meaning; this is called word embedding. Similarities between word representations are measured to identify text class. Word embeddings can be created using word2vec technique. However, recently fastText was implemented to provide better results when it is used with classifiers. In this paper, we will study the performance of well-known classifiers when using both techniques for word embedding with Arabic dataset. We applied them to real data collected from Wikipedia, and we found that both word2vec and fastText had similar accuracy with all used classifiers.

  • In this paper, we analyze strategies and error patterns in solving word problems of linear equation for middle school students. From a test conducted to the sampled 106 second grade middle school students, we obtain the following results: (1)The most difficult types of word problem are velosity and density related problems. The second one is length related problems and the easist one is number related problems. (2)Regardless of the types of word problem, the most familiar strategy is the constructing algebraic equations. However, the most successful strategy is the trial and error. (3)Most likely error patterns are the use of inadequate formulas and wrong trial and errors. Based on these results, a teaching program with various schema is developed and shown to be effective for mid level students in classroom.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how fifth and sixth graders recognize average and to find out suggestions for teaching/learning methods of average by examining which difference there is depending on the way of the word problem presentation. To solve these study questions, With the way of the word problem presentation set up as experimental treatment experiment was conducted to analyze these. In conclusion, since students who did not learn the regular course of average values had various informal concepts already, it is needed to consider handling more various concepts of average in order to enable students to expand flexible thoughts. And informal concepts of average students showed were the same or similar to types of formalized concepts and had logicality and propriety in their own way. Compared with fifth graders, sixth graders showed a wide difference in informal concepts of average depending on the way of the word problem presentation.
