  • Finding promising wind farm sites in islands of Korea is performed in this study. Total ten islands that have been measuring wind speed and direction using automatic weather stations for at least ten years were subjects of this study. Conditions for finding suitable wind farm sites including wind resource and various exclusion factors were applied and two islands that were found not to be suitable for wind farms were excluded. Micositing of a single wind turbine for the remaining eight islands was performed to estimate the annual energy production and the capacity factor.. Based on the simulation results, the wind farm sites selected within the eight islands were found to be suitable for wind power. The capacity factors were varied between 22.3% and 33.0% for a 100 kW wind turbine having a hub height of 30 m.

  • Large wind turbine generators with high temperature superconductors (HTS) are in incessant development because of their advantages such as weight and volume reduction and the increased efficiency compared with conventional technologies. In addition, nowadays the wind turbine market is growing in a function of time, increasing the capacity and energy production of the wind farms installed and increasing the electrical power for the electrical generators installed. As a consequence, it is raising the wind power energy contribution for the global electricity demand. In this study, a forecast of wind energy development will be firstly emphasized, then it continue presenting a recent status of the technology development of large scale HTSG for wind power followed by an explanation of HTS wire trend, cryogenics cooling systems concept, HTS magnets field coil stability and other technological parts for optimization of HTS generator design - operating temperature, design topology, field coil shape and level cost of energy, as well. Finally, the most relevant projects and designs of HTS generators specifically for offshore wind power systems are also mentioned in this study.

  • Wind turbine generators were designed on general regulations of wind condition. At real situations, it could be different from the design conditions. There are many control methods and definitions of transient region, because an efficient wind turbine generator control logic is the important matter in generator performance and annual energy production at real conditions. In this document, the power generation sensitivity for wind speed and turbulence intensities was defined to know the sensitive transient region. Wind conditions are applied for the ranges of 7~10m/s mean wind speed and 14~20% turbulence intensity. The sensibility of HR-D86 wind generator was increased in transient region(8~10m/s) on power curve diagram through a torque control to a pitch control. And then GH-bladed simulations was performed for performance analysis of the torque mode switching in transient region on 2MW direct drive wind generator(HR-D86) which is designed IEC class II for onshore. Through the sensitivity and performance analysis, the sensitivity for real wind condition could be the performance index for an wind generator. And the torque mode switching in transient region can increase the mean power generation on HR-D86 wind turbine generator.

  • In this paper, wind data at 20 locations are collected and analyzed in order to review optimal candidate site for offshore wind farm around Korean marginal seas. Observed wind data is fitted to Rayleigh and Weibull distribution and annual energy production is estimated according to wind frequency. As the model of wind turbine generator, seven kinds of output of 1.5~5 MW were selected and their performance curves were used. As a result, Repower-5 MW turbines showed high energy production at wind speeds of 7.15 m/s or higher, but G128-4.5 MW turbines were found to be favorable at lower wind speeds. In the case of Marado, Geojedo and Pohang, where the rate of occurrence of wind speeds over 10 m/s was high, the capacity factor of REpower's 5 MW offshore wind turbine was 56.49%, 50.92% and 50.08%, respectively.

  • This study is to propose ways to improve the system for rational procedures for offshore wind power generation projects. The results of this study are summarized as follows. In order to quickly distribute and develop offshore wind power projects, the permitting period should be shortened through special laws, the government actively intervenes to support the formation and operation of privat-public councils to ensure residents' acceptance. In this way, it can be competitive in the future energy market. Above all, a special law (proposal) related to offshore wind power currently pending in the National Assembly should be passed as soon as possible. Finally, the government and local governments that manage public waters should provide active administrative support based on system improvement measures in consideration of these permits, and the project's main body should minimize damage to the marine environment and ecosystem. Through these subject-specific roles, offshore wind power generation will be able to reduce carbon emissions and help establish a sustainable energy production system.

  • The production of electricity from wind energy is noticed as economic power generation system in the natural resource. Lately, since lots of wind turbine have installed globally, the accidents have increased gradually. In this paper, we classified domestic information for 10 years, information of new energy and industrial technology development organization(NEDO) for 4years and caithness windfarms information forum(CWIF) for 15 years according to part and cause of wind turbine accident. We found that the main causes of accidents are storm, lightening and carelessness. The results of classifying and analyzing the informations, should be used to take measures on the accident prevention of wind turbine.

  • AWS (Automated Weather Station) wind data was used to predict the annual energy production of Gangwon wind farm having a total capacity of 98 MW in Korea. Two common wind energy prediction programs, WAsP and WindSim were used. Predictions were made for three consecutive years of 2007, 2008 and 2009 and the results were compared with the actual annual energy prediction presented in the CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) monitoring report of the wind farm. The results from both prediction programs were close to the actual energy productions and the errors were within 10%.

  • Rapid population growth with high living standards and high electronics use for personal comfort has raised the electricity demand exponentially. To fulfill this elevated demand, conventional energy sources are shifting towards low production cost and long term usable alternative energy sources. Hybrid renewable energy systems (HRES) are becoming popular as stand-alone power systems for providing electricity in remote areas due to advancement in renewable energy technologies and subsequent rise in prices of petroleum products. Wind and solar power are considered feasible replacement to fossil fuels as the prediction of the fuel shortage in the near future, forced all operators involved in energy production to explore this new and clean source of power. Presented paper proposes fuzzy logic based Energy Management System (EMS) for Wind Turbine (WT), Photo Voltaic (PV) and Diesel Generator (DG) hybrid micro-grid configuration. Battery backup system is introduced for worst environmental conditions or high load demands. Dump load along with dump load controller is implemented for over voltage and over speed protection. Fuzzy logic based supervisory control system performs the power flow control between different scenarios such as battery charging, battery backup, dump load activation and DG backup in most intellectual way.
