This study was conducted to investigate the effect of a 3 week low calorie diet (LCD) and a 9 week of behavior modification (BM) program on the weight loss, mineral and vitamin status in 22 obese women. The subject were healthy, obese (PIBW> $120\%$) women aged 20 - 50 Yr and not taking any medications known to influence body composition, mineral or vitamin metabolism During the LCD program, subjects were provided commercial liquid formulas with 125 kcal per pack and were instructed to have a formula for replacement of one meal and at least one regular meal per day within the range of daily 800 - 1200 kcal intake. During the BM program the subjects weekly attended the group nutrition counseling session to encourage themselves to modify their eating behavior and spontaneously restrict their energy intakes. The BM program focused on stimulus control, control of portion sizes and modification of binge eating and other adverse habits. The initial mean energy intake of subjects was 2016.9 $\pm$ 129.8 kcal ($100.8\%$ of RDA) and dropped to 1276.5 $\pm$ 435.7 kcal at the end of a 3 week of LCD program and elevated to 1762 $\pm$ 329.3 kcal at the end of a 9 week of BM program. Carbohydrate, protein and fat intakes were significantly decreased at the end of the LCD but carbohydrate was the only macro nutrient that showed significant decrease (p < 0.05) at the end of the BM program compared to baseline. Calcium and iron intakes decreased significantly (p < 0.01, respectively) with no significant changes in other micronutrients at the end of the LCD. The mean weight of the subjects decreased from 73.8 $\pm$ 8.0 kg to 69.2 $\pm$ 7.7 kg with LCD and ended up with 67.7 $\pm$ 7.1 kg after 9 weeks of BM. The 3 weeks of LCD reduced most of the anthropometric indices such as BMI, PIBW, fat weight, wast-to-hip ratio and subscapular and suprailiac skinfold thickness. The 9 weeks of behavior modification showed slight change or maintenance of each anthropometric measurements. Weight loss and decreased WHR with the diet program induced significantly decreased systolic blood pressure. SGOT, SGPT and serum insulin levels with improved serum lipid profiles. Biochemical parameters related to iron status such as hemoglobin, hematocrit were significantly decreased (p < 0.01) at the end of the LCD. But their mean values were within normal range. The mean serum 25 (OH) vitamin $D_3$ level significantly increased after whole diet program. Serum folate level significantly decreased after 12 weeks of diet program. In conclusion 3 weeks of LCD brought 4.6 kg reduction in body weight without risk of iron, zinc or vitamin D deficiency and 9 weeks of the BM was effective to maintain nutritional status with slightly more weight reduction (1.5 kg). However calcium intake and serum folate should be monitored during the LCD and BM because of increased risk of deficiencies.
Objectives: Acceptability of patients towards obesity treatment program is associated with better weight loss outcomes. The purpose of this study was to review previously published study results of the predictive factors associated with patients' acceptability in obesity treatment. Methods: Authors searched for the articles related to acceptability reported as continuation, attendance and adherence, published from 2011 to 2018 found on Pubmed, Scopus, Research Information Sharing Service, and Koreanstudies Information Service System. A total of 23 articles were finally selected. From the study results, unchangeable and changeable predictors were extracted, and these predictors were examined according to detail categories. Results: Regarding the continuation of the treatment, unchangeable factors such as younger age, lower educational level, male sexuality and lower accessibility to physical activity predicted lower continuation. Furthermore, changeable factors such as early and half weight loss, better accessibility to the treatment and financial incentives for retention predicted higher continuation rate. Greater degree of attendance was predicted by unchangeable factors such as economical affordability, and changeable predictors such as half weight loss and proximity to the clinic. Main factors of adherence to the recommendation were unchangeable predictors such as weight loss experience, and changeable predictors such as more physical activity and appropriate dietary habits. Negative psychological state predicted lower continuation, attendance and adherence rate. Conclusions: Our review results suggest that unchangeable and changeable predictors of acceptability of patients should be carefully examined during treatments of obesity.
Obesity increases the risk of knee and to a lesser extent hip OA, which combined affect a large percentage of middle-aged and elderly adults and which are major source of disability, and factor of drop a lowering in the physical exercise ability. Energy expenditure from physical activity accounts for up to 30% of total energy expenditure, it can have a significant impact on energy balance. We studied a exercise therapy that improved long-term weight management and produced additional benefits - loss of joint pain, improved joint mobility, and this exercise program will enhance the weight loss and health benefits from physical activity in the treatment of obese patients with osteoarthritis.
A Spitz (5-years old, castrated male) and a Maltese (9-years old, castrated male) were presented with weight loss, polyuria/polydipsia (PU/PD) and depression. Diabetic ketosis was diagnosed based on clinical signs, physical examinations and screening tests (CBC, serum chemistry and urinalysis). The dogs were treated with NPH initially. However, NPH was inadequate to control blood glucose level due to the short duration of the action (< 5 hours). Because of the poor glycemic control with NPH, the dogs showed diabetic complications including weight loss and cataract. After change to glargine, the duration of insulin action was extended up to 11 hours. As a result, there was significant improvement in clinical signs and serum fructosamine concentrations. This study suggests that glargine is useful as a long-acting insulin in dogs which have poor glycemic control due to the short duration of NPH.
The purpose of this study was to investigate self-esteem, body image, body cathexis and body attitude of female middle school students. A total of 298 subjects were included in this study. Subjects were classified into weight control group and a non weight control group. As a result of analyzing body shapes satisfaction was higher in the non weight control group 2.83 than in the weight control group 2.28 (p<0.001). The weight control group revealed lower body satisfaction than the non weight control group. The result of the reason for weight control was the ratio of 'weight loss' 84.6%, respectively (p<0.001). Factors impacting physical image of female middle school students were analyzed as friends (3.46), internet (3.22), and TV (3.13). Results suggest that educational program should be combined with a positive emphasis on physical image and self-esteem for female middle school students. Also, there was a high correlation between body weight and self-esteem. Results indicate that female middle school students are interested in weight loss with the wrong body image. Therefore, female middle school students should be provided with an educational approach to such issues so that they have a realistic perception of their body and form realistic values about self-esteem and body.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide basic data for the development of weight control programs to maintain and promote healthy behavior in women college students by identifying their weight control behaviors and factors that influence these behaviors. Method: Data were collected from 300 women student participants and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression with the SPSS 18.0 program. Result: Weight control behavior showed a significant difference according to participants' gender role identity type. Weight control behaviors were correlated with self-efficacy, body image, objective BMI, and ideal BMI. Factors influencing weight control behavior were self-efficacy (${\beta}$= .449, $p$<.001), secret method for weight loss (${\beta}$= .181, $p$<.001), monthly allowance below 200,000 won (${\beta}$= .156, $p$= .006), weight control support from others (${\beta}$= .124, $p$= .013), eating breakfast (${\beta}$= .119, $p$= .015), and age (${\beta}$= .113, $p$= .023) with R-sq. value of 45.3%. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that development of interventions for weight control behavior and health education for college women should reflect identified factors influencing weight control behavior and gender role identity.
Context : Oriental medicine deals with mind cardinally and effectiveness of CBT on weight control is well-known. but there is no well-structured psychotherapy for weight control like CBT in Oriental medicine so far. Therefore It is necessary to develop new cognitive program based on the theory of Oriental medical. Objective: This study examined whether Yangsung program based on new cognitive weight regulation model is effective on weight loss, self esteem and self control. Design and setting: 44 women were assigned randomly to 2 groups; experimental group(n=24) and control group(n=10). experimental group had 11 sessions consisted of cognitive therapy, meditation, general diet and exercise education. Control group had personal interview with general diet and exercise education and ear acupuncture once a week for two months. All subjects were weighed and evaluated with Rosenberg self esteem scale, and three factor eating questionnaires at the beginning of the program and at the end of the program. Result: Experimental group reported significant changes of weight, self esteem, restraint eating, disinhibition and hunger(p<0.01). Compared with control group, more significant(p<0.05) Weight reduction and self-esteem enhancement were reported in experimental group than control group. There is no significant difference between two groups in changes of restraint eating, disinhibition and hunger.
Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of oriental treatment on pediatric overweight and obesity. Methods From the December 2006 to the May 2008, 19 children were treated of obesity control in J Korean Hospital, electrolipolysis, auricular acupuncture was done 2 times per week for 4 weeks with the consulting of diet and exercise. Nine children were treated for 9 weeks. We checked the change of weight at treatment time and the body composition measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis(BIA) per 2 weeks. Results After 4 weeks treatment, the weight loss was 2.67${\pm}$1.75kg. And after 9 weeks treatment, the weight loss of 9 children was 5.91${\pm}$2.73kg. Total fat mass measured by BIA significantly decreased 2.38${\pm}$1.19kg after 4 weeks. BMI and the weight loss of children were significantly correlated. After 4 weeks treatment the BMI significantly decreased 1.43${\pm}$0.89kg/m$^2$. After 8 weeks treatment the BMI of 9 children significantly decreased 3.31${\pm}$1.47kg/m$^2$. Conclusions The pediatric obesity could be effective treated by herdal medicine and electroacupuncture.
By improving body composition, such as fat, lean body mass and total body weight, an exercise program can be an effective treatment of obesity. The effects of exercise on obesity have been confirmed via various approaches such as type, intensity, duration, frequency, and combination with diet. Combined exercise and diet is the most efficient strategy for weight loss, and exercise alone could improve metabolism irrespective of weight loss. In addition, physical activity, including exercise, is emphasized to avoid a 'yo-yo' phenomenon. Exercise increases lipolysis stimulated by such factors as catecholamine, growth hormone (GH), and hormone sensitive lipase (HSL). Moreover, changes in insulin and cortisol through exercise affect adipose tissue, which is known as not only an energy storage locale, but also as an endocrine organ. Adipocytokines secreted by adipose tissue respond to signals that modulate metabolism and inflammation. Exercise has generally shown positive effects on adipocytokines, and these effects increase in conjunction with a hypocaloric diet. However, a long duration and a high intensity of exercise could induce an inflammatory response. This review summarizes the effects of exercise on obesity treatment, which contributes to the exercise and nutritional fields, particularly of community nutritionists. Objectives: The aim of study was to investigate the effect of herbal medicine on obesity and to define which seasonal factor could be utilized to make an obesity treatment program more effective. Methods: Three hundred and forty-four subjects were recruited and data were analyzed for weight, body fat, muscular volume, body fat ratio, body mass index (BMI) change and treatment duration. At first, age classification was performed for the comparisons. Moreover, starting season of treatment was categorized to determine it's influence over the treatment. Results: It was found the administration of herbal medicine could diminish every analyzed fields of entire patients. Compared among age groups, there were no significant differences of all fields. However, the categorization of start season showed significant differences of weight, BMI change and treatment duration. In addition, the analysis of assumed 10% weight loss elicited patients started treatment in spring and winter should spend 12 and 13 weeks and summer would be 9.5 weeks. Conclusions: It was found herbal medicine would be effective for female obesity and expected patients could achieve 5.91 kg weight loss for 65.88 days treatment. Summer group had significant shorter treatment duration and it was presumed summer group had more concentration for achievement. Days required for assumed 10% weight loss was calculated to be 84 days in spring, 67 days in summer, 96 days in winter. Hereafter, further controlled study with more numbers of patients should be needed to determine the goal of medical treatment for obesity.
