  • This study evaluated the toxicity of the burning gas from the synthetic wood products used in housings or warehouses. The combustion products of five materials, viz. impregnated laminated board, MDF, Douglas fir plywood, core plywood, and Lauan retardant, were analyzed using SEM, FTIR and a Cone Calorimeter. For the Lauan retardant, 256,965 ppm of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) and 1,475 ppm of sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) were measured, which are 2.5 times and 3.6 times as high as their lethal concentrations of 100,000 ppm and 400 ppm, respectively. For the impregnated laminated board, 1,569 ppm of nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) was measured, which is 6 times as high as its lethal concentration of 250 ppm. For MDF, 795 ppm of ammonia ($NH_3$) was measured, which is higher than its lethal concentration of 750 ppm. As a result, most internal-finishes generated toxic combustion products at levels higher than their lethal concentrations, which underlines the importance of the selection and manufacturing of internal-finish materials.

  • It is important to adopt an operation system to operate the Automated warehouses using limited resources such as space, mobile racks, and forklift. The main purpose from the operation system is to reduce the length of moving and time for both mobile racks and forklift. The complexity of the warehouse will be higher because the racks and vehicles are moving at the same time. This complexity influences badly so the operation system has to control it well. Not only layout or receipt or issue, but also conflict between mobile racks and vehicles give more complexity to the warehouse. This paper aims to fine the proper operation method related to the layout and the cargo assignment.

  • In a data warehouse, users typically search for trends, patterns, or unusual data behaviors by issuing queries interactively. The OLAP range-sum query is widely used in finding trends and in discovering relationships among attributes in the data warehouse. In a recent environment of enterprises, data elements in a data cube are frequently changed. The problem is that the cost of updating a prefix sum cube is very high. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm which reduces the update cost significantly by an index structure called the Δ-tree. Also, we propose a hybrid method to provide either approximate or precise results to reduce the overall cost of queries. It is highly beneficial for various applications that need quick approximate answers rather than time consuming accurate ones, such as decision support systems. An extensive experiment shows that our method performs very efficiently on diverse dimensionalities, compared to other methods.

  • Silo is a warehouse for storing granular materials such as grain, cement, petroleum compound and coal. When compared to other warehouses, the silo can use space efficiently. The coal silo are consists of silo, tunnel and extractor. Of these, there are not sufficient study and design data on tunnel. It depends heavily upon trial and error method by field engineers with several years of experience. Recently, silos are constructed with a large size, and tunnel becomes to be in danger of severe cracking and collapse by a huge load of coal. So it is necessary to analyze structural safety for tunnel. In this study, the problems of the tunnel are analyzed by field data, and reinforcement of structural weak area using FE analysis has been carried out to design the tunnel satisfying structural safety. From FE Analysis, the reinforced model which does not exceed the yield strength of the material has been proposed.

  • Since 1970's, the rivers in industrial cities and metropolitan cities in Korea have been severely contaminated and the riverfronts have been to garbage yard, warehouses and sanitary facilities that produce low efficiency in urban land-use. As a result, riverfront in most cities became lost space and artificial area which composed of asphalt road, concrete riverbank and parking lot. However, Sustainable management is the main concept of riverfront development in 21st century. Also, in contemporary riverfront space, it is the pivotal paradigm that the development of eco-space and mixture of cultural space. Citizen require greener, more ecological and water-friendly space in riverfront of city. So, the purpose of this paper lies in suggestion for building sustainable development and management for riverfront in Korean city. For this purpose, this paper has reviewed the developmental trend of recent riverfront, has analyzed locational environment and land use of riverfront in city, has set policy and the strategy for sustainable riverfront.

  • A data warehouse is an integrated and summarized collection of data that can efficiently support decision making process. The summarized data at the data warehouse is often stored in materialized views. These materialized views need to be updated when source data change. Since the propagation of updates to the views may impose a significant overhead, it is very important to update the warehouse views efficiently. Though various strategies have been proposed to maintain views in the past, they typically require too much accesses to the data sources when the changes of multiple data sources have to be reflected in the view. In this paper we propose an efficient view update strategy that uses relatively small number of accesses to the data sources. We also show the performance advantage of our method over other existing methods through experiments using TPC-D data and queries.

  • The temporal aggregate in temporal databases is an extension of the conventional aggregate to include the time on the range condition of aggregation. It is a useful operation for Historical Data Warehouses, Call Data Records, and so on. In this paper, we propose a structure for the temporal aggregation with multiple selection predicates, called the ITA-tree, and an aggregate processing method based on the structure. In the ITA-tree, we transform the time interval of a record into a single value, called the T-value. Then, we index records according to their T-values like a $B^+$-tree style. For possible hot-spot situations, we also propose an improvement of the ITA-tree, called the eITA-tree. Through analyses and experiments, we evaluate the performance of the proposed method.

  • The ITS(Intelligent Transport System) enables us to provide solutions on traffic problems, while maximizing safety and efficiency of road and transportation systems, by combining technologies from information and communication, electrical engineering, electronics, mechanics, control and instrumentation with transportation systems. The issues that an integration system for massive traffic data sources must face are due to several factors such as the variety and amount of data available, the representational heterogeneity of the data in the different sources, and the autonomy and differing capabilities of the sources. In this paper, we describe how to extract and load of the heterogeneous massive traffic data from the operational databases, such as FTMS and ARTIS using commercial tools. Also, we experiment on traffic data warehouses with integrated quality management techniques for providing high quality data.

  • The objectives of this study are to analyze emitted components and concentrations of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) from the inside of vehicles that were experimented with sedans and RVs (Recreational Vehicles) delivered from warehouses after 15, 30, 45 and 60 days. The value of TVOC (Total Volatile Organic Compounds) was twice to eight times over than the standard value. However, TVOC of vehicles was more detected than RVs. Especially, the value of toluene was rapidly decreased after 45 days. But after 60 days, it was more detected than the standard value. After 45 days, the xylene value was confirmed to be lower than the standard value. As a result, it was found that development of alternative technologies such as non-solvent and systems for automobile interior parts may be imminent. Using test method standard, although it is not yet International Standard, to analyze and replace components, concentrations, human-noxious, it will contribute to producing environmental-friendly vehicles.

  • Singapore government is strongly promoting the development and utilization of underground space in national level due to the nature of the city state which lacks the land. As well as conventional underground utilization in shallow depth such as metro and underground roads, large rock cavern utilization has been started after the successful completion of the underground ammunition depot in the rock, and Jurong Rock Cavern, the second large underground cavern project has just been completed. In this paper, after evaluating the conditions of the underground development in rock mass through the analysis of the geology of Singapore, the history and current status of underground development are examined. Several creative development plans from Singapore government such as underground reservoirs, underground automation logistics systems and underground warehouses storage etc. are introduced with technical issues. This paper also discusses the problems and issues related to the development of large underground space in rock mass in Singapore. It is expected that such active development of underground space in Singapore can give many opportunities and also challenges for rock engineering and industry in the future.
