  • Focusing on the communication effects of fast fashion visual merchandising (VM), this paper examines the effects of a fast fashion store's VM attributes on consumer's perceptions of store image towards newness and prestige that influence the time spent at stores as well as the frequency of visits. This study was conducted by collecting data online using males and females in their twenties to forties; subsequently, a total of 382 samples were analyzed. The VM communication effect model utilized in fast fashion stores was developed and tested on structural equation modeling. The findings of the study were as follows. First, the show window presentation and ancillary facilities of VM elements have a positive effect on the perception of newness, while merchandise display, layout, and signage have a positive influence on the perception of prestige. Therefore, the VM elements in the fast fashion stores that affect the perception of newness and prestige are unique. Second, the perceptions of newness and prestige have a positive impact on time spent in fast fashion stores; however, only the perception of store's newness has a significant effect on the frequency of visits. Third, show window presentation and facilities are VM elements that directly influence the time spent and frequency of visits. Finally, we confirm that store image partially mediate between VM elements and shopping behavior at a fast fashion store.

  • This paper proposes a real-time foreground segmentation and background substitution method for protecting the privacy on visual communication. Previous works on this topic have some problems with the color and shape of foreground and the capture device such as stereo camera. we provide a solution which can segment the foreground in real-time using fixed mono camera. For improving the performance of a foreground extraction, we propose the Temporal Foreground Probability Model (TFPM) by modeling temporal information of a video. Also we provide an boundary processing method for natural and smooth synthesizing that using alpha matte and simple post-processing method.

  • The high-tech computer technology developments have greatly affected the area of design education. Starting from the mid 80s, innovations in visual presentation methods have heightened with 2D computer graphic programs, CAD & 3D modeling, and Rapid Prototype that allows dimensional generation. The specialty and quality in design studio education have advanced due to the development in presentation methods such as Power Point and Keynote. But there are many problems with the current method of presenting the visual outcome in a data format using beam projectors, which is a vertical presenting method compared to the old studio study method of conducting discussions and reviews based on the substantial outcome. The essence of studio study that allows for comparisons and analysis by horizontally opening up the various work outcomes is being offset. Also the requirement for manual idea sketching work that plays an important role in the initial design phase continuing to decrease due to the digital working process dependence and cumbersome procedures in the presentation. In order to resolve this problem, the CALM system (Class Applied LCD Modular System) has been developed that replaces the method of attaching the sketches or renderings on the wall with a digital multi-display system. In a nutshell, individuals will upload the outcomes online and display them on the CALM system studio that is composed of 32 LCD (Columns: 4 $\times$ Rows: 8) monitors that are 19 inches in size so that various personnel can openly study the design outcomes. Also the central 42 inch PDP monitor that offers touch pad capability allows each design outcome to be described and examined by expanding. The concept phase of this development process has elevated to the production of an operating prototype that is being reviewed of its practicality. It is considered that the development of this system will decrease the extreme tendency of depending on digital operation but achieve revitalization of a more realistic and opened studio study environment compared to the individual consulting method of the old study approach.

  • This study summarizes advantages and disadvantages of numerical methods and compares ELLAM and LEZOOMPC to develop an efficient numerical modeling technique on contaminant transport. Eulerian-Lagrangian method and Eulerian method are commonly used numerical techniques. However Eulerian-Lagrangian method does not conserve mass globally and fails to treat boundary in a straightforward manner. Also, Eulerian method has restrictions on the size of Courant number and mesh Peclet number because of time truncation error. ELLAM (Eulerian Lagrangian Localized Adjoint Method) which has been popularly used for past 10 years in numerical modeling, is known for overcoming these numerical problems of Eulerian-Lagrangian method and Eulerian method. However, this study investigates advantages and disadvantages of ELLAM and suggests a change for the better. To figure out the disadvantages of ELLAM, the results of ELLAM, LEZOOMPC (Lagrangian-Eulerian ZOOMing Peak and valley Capturing), and visual MODFLOW are compared for four examples having different mesh Peclet numbers. The result of ELLAM generates numerical oscillation at infinite of mesh Peclet number, but that of LEZOOMPC yields accurate simulations. The simulation results suggest that the numerical error of ELLAM could be alleviated by adopting some schemes in LEZOOMPC. In other words, the numerical model which combines ELLAM with backward particle tracking, forward particle tracking, adaptively local zooming, and peak/valley capturing of LEZOOMPC can be developed for not only overcoming the numerical error of ELLAM, but also keeping the numerical advantage of ELLAM.

  • The discovery of the Interfacial Transition Zone (ITZ) by Farran in 1956 initiated a new era in the study of the behaviour of concrete. Acknowledged as the weak link, this ITZ was studied extensively, numerically as well as experimentally. While the complementary experimental tests illustrated the visual behaviour of this specimen under increasing monotonic compression loading, a perfect bond within the ITZ has also been studied by using finite element analysis for comparison purposes. Finite element analysis was used to evaluate the degree of correctness and precision of the proposed ITZ model. This paper discusses the use of the cutoff bar in finite element modeling, representing the ITZ of a single aggregate (inclusion) in a mortar matrix. Experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of the ITZ model on the single inclusion specimen's strength. The model was tested for some inclusions that varied in dimension and shape. The effect of inclusion shape on the stress concentrations of the specimens was examined. The aim of this research work is to propose a simple yet accurate ITZ model to be used in the commercially available finite element software packages.

  • SEAWAT, a linked modeling program of Visual MODFLOW was used to analyze the change in groundwater levels and salinity related groundwater dam construction in Cheongsan island, Wando-Gun, Jeollanam-Do. The steady-state model results show the groundwater flow and salinity distribution of the studied area. The groundwater flows from north-west and south-east highlands into the river, located in the middle part of the basin, and is eventually discharged to the ocean. Part of the sea water infiltrates into the river; and through the estuary's alluvium aquifer, the sea water intrusion takes place spreading to about 830 m from the ocean. The transient model results show that after the groundwater dam construction, groundwater levels will rise to a maximum of 2.0 m upstream, and the groundwater storage will increase 21,000 after 10 years. Meanwhile 31% of the total area affected by sea water intrusion will decrease. To conclude, the groundwater dam is a very useful method for a secure water resource in preparation for drought and water shortages in the island regions.

  • This paper presents a simple method for relieving the ambiguity problems within the sub-voxel based surface-fitting approach for the surface construction. ECB algorithm is proposed to avoid the ambiguity problem which is the root of the holes within the resulting polygon based approximation. The basic idea of our disambiguation strategy is the use of a set of predefined modeling primitives (we call SMP) which guarantees the topological consistency of resulted surface polygons. 20 SMPs are derived from the extension of the concept of the elementary modeling primitives in the CB algorithm [3], and fit one to five faces of them to the iso-surface crossing a cell with no further processing. A look-up table which has a surface triangle list is pre-calculated using these 20 SMPs. All of surface triangles in the table are from the faces of SMPs and are stored in the form of edge list on which vertices of each surface triangle are located. The resulted polygon based approximation is unique at every threshold value and its validity is guaranteed without considering the complicated problems such as average of density and postprocessing. ECB algorithm could be free from the need for the time consuming post-processing, which eliminates holes by revisiting every boundary cell. Through three experiments of surface construction from volume data, its capability of hole avoidance is showed.

  • According to rapid growth of a web environment, usage-centered design is being highlighted. This paper suggests the development step and algorithm to generate a user interface prototype automatically on the basis of usage-centered design. For this purpose, The transition object of the user interface is modeled from requirement analysis, and an modeling rule as well as algorithms of business events are made for the creation of the user interface. Through these processes, visual cohesions of business events become strong and unskilled designers can develop the qualified user interface prototypes. A user's understanding of business tasks can also be improved and prototype iterations reduced.

  • We propose a new method to visualize 3D models for FDM (Fused Deposition. Modeling) printing that appearance of the printed results can be predicted more realistically as that the efficiency of the modeling-printing process can be improved. The layered nature of horizontal slicing and the vibratory nozzle movements of customer-level FDM 3D printers leaving the characteristic patterns of noisy stripes on the surfaces of printed objects make difficulties in prediction of printed result in company with the thermal contraction of filament material. First, our method analyses the G-codes generated by common slicers to obtain proper outlines and take advantages of a modified version of Perlin noise based texturing method for rendering efficiency and enough number of control parameters on the visual details. The results show improved rendering details of pre-visualization of FDM printing.
