  • A volume capturing method using unstructured grid system for numerical analysis of multiphase flows is introduced in the present paper. This method uses an interface capturing method (CICSAM) in a volume of fluid(VOF) scheme for phase interface capturing. The novelty of CICSAM lies in the adaptive combination of high resolution discretization scheme which ensures the preservation of the sharpness and shape of the interface while retaining boundedness of the field, and no explicit interface reconstruction which is perceived to be difficult to implement on unstructured grid system. Several typical test cases for multiphase flows are presented, which are simulated by an in-house solution code(PowerCFD). This code employs an unstructured cell-centered method based on a conservative pressure-based finite-volume method with CICSAM. It is found that the present method simulates efficiently and accurately complex free surface flows such as multiphase flows.

  • The Rayleigh-Taylor instability, the bubble rising in both partially and fully filled containers and the droplet splash are simulated by an in-house solution code(PowerCFD), which are typical benchmark problems among multiphase flows with material interface due to density difference. The present method(code) employs an unstructured cell-centered method based on a conservative pressure-based finite-volume method with interface capturing method(CICSAM) in a volume of fluid(VOF) scheme for phase interface capturing. The present results are compared with other numerical solutions found in the literature. It is found that the present method simulates efficiently and accurately complex free surface flows such as multiphase flows with material interface due to both density difference and instability.

  • For the tracking of three dimensional free surface motions, a method referred to as the Volume of Fluid(VOF) algorithm is extended. In order to calculate the slope of three dimensional free surface which is the most important for the advection algorithm that decides the amount of fluid from cell to cell and for the application of free surface boundary condition, a simple method utilizing two dimensional slope informations is introduced. The extended algroithm is tested by demonstrating the simulation of a propagating sinusoidal wave through the channel whose width changes abruptly.

This code employs an unstructured cell-centered method based on a conservative pressure-based finite-volume method with interface capturing method (CICSAM) in a volume of fluid(VOF) scheme for phase interface capturing. The present results are compared with other numerical solutions found in the literature. It is found that the present code simulate complex free surface flows such as multi phase flows due to large density difference efficiently and accurately.

  • A Navier-Stokes equation solver for incompressible viscous flows with free surface is developed and tested. This is based upon a fractional time step method and a non-staggered finite volume formulation for unstructured meshes. For time advancement scheme, Adams -Bashforth method for convective term and Crank-Nicolson method for diffusive term are applied. The interface between two fluids with different fluid properties is tracked with Piecewise Linear Interface Calculation(PLIC) Volume-of-Fluid(VOF) methods. Computational results are presented for some test problems: the broken dam, the sloshing in a rectangular tank, the filling of a cylindrical tank.

  • Finite element analysis of fluid flow with moving free surface has been carried out in two and tree dimensions. The new VOF-based numerical algorithm that has been proposed by the present authors was applied to several 2-D and 3-D free surface flow problems. The proposed free surface tracking scheme is based on two numerical tools that have been newly introduced by the present authots; the orientation vector to represent the free surface orientation in each cell and the baby-cell to determine the fluid volume flux at each cell boundary. The proposed numerical algorithm has been applied to 2-D and 3-D cavity filling and sloshing problems, which demonstrated versatility and effectiveness of the new free surface tracking scheme as well as the overall solution procedure. The proposed numerical algorithm resolved successfully the interacting free surface with each other. The simulated results demonstrated the applicability of proposed numerical algorithm to the practical problems of large free surface motion. Also, it has been demonstrated that the proposed free surface tracking scheme can be easily implemented in any irregular non-uniform grid systems and can be extended to the 3-D free surface flow problem without additional efforts.

  • Numerical simulation of fluid flow with moving free surface has been carried out. For the free surface flow, a VOF(Volume of Fluid)-based algorithm utilizing a fixed grid system has been investigated. In order to reduce numerical smearing at the free surface represented on a fixed grid system, a new free surface tracking algorithm based on the donor-acceptor scheme has been presented. Novel features of the proposed algorithm are characterized as two numerical tools; the orientation vector to represent the free surface orientation in each cell and the baby-cell to determine the fluid volume flux at each cell boundary. The proposed algorithm can be easily implemented in any irregular non-uniform grid systems that are usual in finite element method (FEM). Moreover, the proposed algorithm can be extended and applied to the 3-D free surface flow problem without additional efforts. For computation of unsteady incompressible flow, a finite element approximation based on the explicit fractional step method has been adopted. In addition, the SUPG(streamline upwind/Petrov-Galerkin) method has been implemented to deal with convection dominated flows. Combination of the proposed free surface tracking scheme and explicit fractional step formulation resulted in an efficient solution algorithm. Validity of the present solution algorithm was demonstrated from its application to the broken dam and the solitary wave propagation problems.

VOF 기법을 이용한 고체로켓모터의 내탄도 해석 연구 (A Study on Internal Ballistic Analysis of Solid Rocket Motor Using VOF Method)

  • 본 연구에서는 VOF 기법을 이용하여 3D 그레인 형상의 연소표면적을 계산하는 프로그램을 개발하고 연소표면적 결과를 이용하여 내탄도 성능해석을 수행하였다. 연소표면적 계산 수행 시 격자 크기, 난류화염속도, 단위 계산시간을 기초로 한 매개변수의 의존성을 확인하고, 상용 3D 모델링 소프트웨어를 이용하여 산출한 면적 결과와 비교하였다. 개발 프로그램으로 산출한 연소표면적 결과를 바탕으로 고체로켓모터의 내탄도 해석을 수행하였다. 임의의 추진제 조성으로 화학평형을 계산하고 시간에 따른 연소표면적 및 모터 내부 압력을 예측하였다. 웹(web) 연소 동안 평균 압력은 5.34 MPa 으로 기존 연구 결과와 약 20%의 차이를 보였다.

불규칙파동장에 있어서 VOF법에 의한 투과성잠제의 파랑제어 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study of the Wave Control Characteristics of the Permeable Submerged Breakwater using VOF Method in Irregular Wave Fields)

  • 최근 입사하는 파랑으로부터 해역을 보호하기 위해 다양한 형태의 해안구조물이 건설되어 왔다. 그 중에서 잠제는 경관성, 시공성, 환경성 측면의 우수한 장점 때문에 소파 및 표사제어 구조물로 폭넓게 사용되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 불규칙파동장에 설치된 VOF법에 기초한 2차원 수치파동수로를 적용하여 투과성잠제 배후에서 파랑에너지 변화특성과 전달율에 대하여 수치적으로 검토하였다. 주파수스펙트럼 해석결과로부터 쇄파가 발생한 경우 일렬 투과성잠제는 스펙트럼 피크가 단주기 쪽으로 이동하였으며, 이열 투과성잠제는 전 주기대에 걸쳐 파랑 에너지가 고르게 분포하고 있었다. 쇄파가 발생하지 않은 경우 투과성잠제 배후에서의 스펙트럼 피크는 유의주기대에서 나타나고 있었다. 투과율의 해석결과로부터 쇄파가 발생한 경우보다 쇄파가 발생하지 않은 경우에 투과성잠제 배후로 상당량의 파랑에너지가 전달되는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
