The fiber-reinforced composite materials have been advanced for various applications because of their excellent mechanical and electromagnetic properties. On their manufacturing processes, however, thermo-curing inherently produces the undesired thermal deformation mainly from temperature drop from the process temperature to the room temperature, so called spring-back. The spring-back must be understood especially in the hybrid composites in order to design and fabricate desired shape. In this research, (glass fiber / epoxy) + (carbon fiber / epoxy) unsymmetric hybrid composites were fabricated under various conditions such as cure cycle, laminate thickness, stacking sequence and curing sequence. Coupons were made and spring-back were measured using coordinate measuring machine (CMM). Using the Classical Lamination Theory (CLT) and finite element analysis (ANSYS), the behavior of spring-back were predicted and compared with the experimental data. The results from CLT and FEA agreed well with the experimental data. Although, the spring-back could be reduced by lowering curing temperature, at any case, the spring-back could not be removed completely.
The general formulation for free vibration and stability analysis of unsymmetric thin-wared space frames is presented in case where the shear deformation effects are neglected. The kinetic and total potential energies are derived by applying the extended virtual work principle, introducing displacement parameters defined at the arbitrarily chosen axis and including warping deformation and second order terms of finite semitangential rotations. In formulating the finite element procedure, cubic Hermitian polynomials are utilized as shape functions of the two node space frame element. Mass, elastic stiffness, and geometric stiffness matrices for the unsymmetric thin-walled section are evaluated, and load-correction stiffness matrices for off-axis distributed loadings are considered. In order to illustrate the accuracy and practical usefulness of this formulation, finite element solutions for the free vibration and stability problems of thin-walled beam-columns and space frames are presented and compared with available solutions.

The unsymmetrically layered artificial material model is consistently introduced to find the optimum topologies of the plate structures. Reissner-Mindlin (RM) plate theory is adopted to formulate the present 9-node plate element considering the first-order shear deformation of the plates. In the topology optimization process, the strain energy to be minimized is employed as the objective function and the initial volume of structures is adopted as the constraint function. In addition, the resizing algorithm based on the optimality criteria is used to update the hole size introduced in the proposed artificial material model. Several numerical examples are rallied out to investigate the performance of the proposed technique. From numerical results, the proposed topology optimization techniques are found to be very effective to produce the optimum topology of plate structures. In particular, the proposed unsymmetric stiffening layer model make it possible to produce more realistic stiffener design of the plate structures.
Recently reclamation land is largely developed to utilize the land according to economic growth. The soil of landfill is soft, low shear strength, which makes it difficult to use the equipment. A large movement is occurred on the utility tunnel under construction. The inclined land with high water level and underground facilities are widely distributed and the excess pore water pressure may occur under construction similarly to this study. Some different conditions are made to design result, such as 4m of soil piling near the construction area, heavy rainfall during 2nd excavation that may cause flow liquefaction. To analyze the cause of transverse lateral movement, Three dimensional analysis are performed to four load cases, which is original design condition, flow liquefaction by heavy rainfall, unsymmetric lateral soil pressure, and both of them simultaneously. Ten steps of full construction stage, 1st excavation for utility tunnel, construction of utility tunnel, 1st refill, piling soil from 1m to 4 m, 2nd excavation for drainage culvert, liquefaction around the utility tunnel, construction of drainage culvert and 2nd refill, are take into account to investigate the cause of movement.

The differential equations governing free vibrations of the elastic arches with unsymmetric axis are derived in rectangular coordinates rather than in polar coordinates, in which the effect of rotatory inertia is included. Frequencies and mode shapes are computed numerically for parabolic arches with both clamped ends and both hinged ends. Comparisons of natural frequencies between this study and SAP 2000 are made to validate theories and numerical methods developed herein. The convergent efficiency is highly improved under the newly derived differential equations in Rectangular coordinates. The lowest four natural frequency parameters are reported, with and without the rotatory inertia, as functions of three non-dimensional system parameters: the rise to chord length ratio, the span length to chord length ratio, and the slenderness ratio. Also typical mode shapes of vibrating arches are presented.

An efficient vehicle routing heuristic for different vehicle moving times for forward and backward between two points is studied in this research. Symmetric distance or moving times are assumed to move back and forth between two points in general, but it is not true in reality. Also, various moving speeds along time zones are considered such as the moving time differences between rush hours or not busy daytimes. To solve this type of extremely complicated combinatorial optimization problems, delivery zones are specified and delivery orders are determined for promising results on the first stage. Then delivery orders in each zone are determined to be connected with other zones for a tentative complete delivery route. Improvement steps are followed to get an effective delivery route for unsymmetric-time-varing vehicle moving speed problems. Performance evaluations are done to show the effectiveness of the suggested heuristic using computer programs specially designed and developed using C++.

In this paper, electromagnetic forces acting on the rotor surface of a BLDC motor for hard disk drive are calculated by the finite element field analysis. The frequency characteristics of torque ripple, local force and unbalanced magnetic force as a source of mechanical vibration area analyzed. Ring-type permanent magnets for the brushless DC motor are apt to have different magnetization levels at each pole because of the unbalanced air gap between the magnet surface and the magnetizer fixture during the multi-poles magnetizing process. This paper discusses the effect of the unsymmetric magnetization distribution in the permanent magnet on the brushless DC motor performances. As a result, the unbalanced magnetic force acting on the rotor surface and the torque ripple are examined for the motor with an unsymmetric magnetization distribution, and compared with those of an ideally symmetric motor.

Most of hard disk drives currently employ fluid dynamic bearing (FDB) for their rotor support. Stiffness of the FDB is affected by many design factors such as bearing clearance, fluid viscosity, and rotational speed. For the high rotating speed HDDs stiffness of the rotor is normally high enough to accomodate load disturbances. However small form factor HDDs that are to be operated in low power consumption are often designed with low stiffness rotors. Although the low stiffness rotor clearly benefits low power operation, it could damage the entire motor structure or head disk interface even by a light mechanical load disturbance such as shock or vibration. In addition, since a single channel HDD does not provide gram load equilibrium in axial direction the rotor could be tilted and make a hard contact to stator. A non-symmetric groove pattern could successfully compensate the tilted rotor angle during operation.
The use of metric trial functions to represent the real stress field in what is called the unsymmetric finite element formulation is an effective way to improve predictions from distorted finite elements. This approach works surprisingly well because the use of parametric functions for the test functions satisfies the continuity conditions while the use of metric (Cartesian) shape functions for the trial functions attempts to ensure that the stress representation during finite element computation can retrieve in a best-fit manner, the actual variation of stress in the metric space. However, the issue of how to handle situations where there is locking along with mesh distortion has never been addressed. In this paper, we show that the use of a consistent definition of the constrained strain field in the metric space can ensure a lock-free solution even when there is mesh distortion. The three-noded Timoshenko beam element is used to illustrate the principles. Some significant conclusions are drawn regarding the optimal strategy for finite element modelling where distortion effects and field-consistency requirements have to be reconciled simultaneously.
