This study was carried out to suggest the best statistical test which may be used to quantify the change of water quality between two groups. Traditional t-test may not be used in cases where the normality of underlying population distribution is not assured. Three non-parametric tests which are based on the relative order of the measurements, were studied to find out the applicability in water quality data analysis. The sign test is based on the sign of the deviation of the measurement from the median value, and the binomial distribution table is used. The signed rank test utilizes not only the sign but also the magnitude of the deviation. The Wilcoxon rank-sum test which is basically same as Mann-Whitney test, tests the mean difference between two independent samples which may have missing data. Among the three non-parametric tests studied, the singed rank test was found out to be applicable in the quantification of the change of water quality between two samples.
Min-max stochastic optimization is an approach to address the distribution ambiguity of the underlying random variable. We present a unified approach to the problem which utilizes the theory of convex order on the random variables. First, we consider a general framework for the problem and give a condition under which the convex order can be utilized to transform the min-max optimization problem into a simple minimization problem. Then extremal distributions are presented for some interesting classes of distributions. Finally, applications to the single-period inventory control problems are given.

Burn-in is a widely used method to improve the quality of products or systems after they have been produced. In this paper, the problem of determining optimal burn-in time for a system which performs given mission is considered. It is assumed that the given mission time is not a fixed constant but a random variable which follows an exponential distribution. Assuming that the underlying lifetime distribution of a system has an eventually increasing failure rate function, an upper bound for the optimal burn-in time which maximizes the probability of performing given mission is derived. The obtained result is also applied to an illustrative example.
A significant influence of the particle size distribution on the resilient behaviour of granular aggregates was usually observed in laboratory tests. However, the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon were rarely reached. In this study, a mechanistic model considering particle breakage is proposed. It is found to be the combined effects of the coefficient of uniformity and the size range between maximum and minimum particle sizes that influences the resilient modulus of granular aggregates. The resilient modulus is found to undergo reduction with evolution of particle breakage by shifting the initial particle size distribution to a broader one.

A climate change-driven increased hydrological variability has been widely acknowledged over the past decades. In this regards, rainfall simulation techniques are being applied in many countries to consider the increased variability. This study proposed a Homogeneous Hidden Markov Chain(HMM) designed to recognize rather complex patterns of rainfall with discrete hidden states and underlying distribution characteristics via mixture probability density function. The proposed approach was applied to Seoul and Jeonju station to verify model's performance. Statistical moments(e.g. mean, variance, skewness and kurtosis) derived by daily and seasonal rainfall were compared with observation. It was found that the proposed HMM showed better performance in terms of reproducing underlying distribution characteristics. Especially, the HMM was much better than the existing Markov Chain model in reproducing extremes. In this regard, the proposed HMM could be used to evaluate a long-term runoff and design flood as inputs.
Background: As herpes zoster progresses via postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) to well-established PHN, it presents its recalcitrant nature to the treatment. At this point, the well-established PHN is fixed as a non-treatable, but manageable chronic painful neuropathic disorder. This study evaluated the incidence of complete relief from PHN according to PHN duration at their first visit, and the other factors influencing it. Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed on patients with PHN at a university-based pain clinic over 7 years. The responders were defined as patients who had complete relief from pain after 1 year of active treatment. Age, sex, PHN duration at their first visit, dermatomal distribution, and underlying disorders were compared in the responder and non-responder groups. Responders were also compared according to these factors. Results: Among 117 PHN patients (M/F = 48/69), 35 patients (29.9%) had complete relief from PHN. Mean ages were $64.3{\pm}10.6$ and $66.9{\pm}10.7$ years, numbers of male to female patients were 11/24 and 37/45, and mean durations of PHN at their first visit were $8.5{\pm}6.3$ and $15.3{\pm}10.7$ months in the responder and non- responder groups, respectively. In addition, PHN patients who visited the clinic before 9 months showed a better result. Dermatomal distribution and underlying disorders did not show significant differences. Conclusions: Almost 30% of PHN patients received complete relief. Those who sought treatment in a pain clinic before 9 months received a better result.

By changing the bulky monolithic services architecture to a microservices-based architecture, industries are managing the rising complexity of Autonomous Vehicles. However, the underlying communication mechanisms for the utilization and distribution of these microservices are incapable of fulfilling the requirements of the futuristic AV, because of the stringent latency requirements along with intermittent and short-lived connectivity issues. This paper proposes to tackle these challenges by employing the revolutionary information-centric networking (ICN) paradigm as an underlying communication architecture. This paper argues that a microservice approach to building autonomous vehicle systems should utilize ICN to achieve effective service utilization, efficient distribution, and uniform service discovery. This research claims that the vision of an information-centric microservices will help to focus on research that can fill in current communication gaps preventing more effective, and lightweight autonomous vehicle services and communication protocols.
When the centers of mass and stiffness of a building do not coincide, the structure experiences torsional responses. Such systems can consist of the underlying soil and the super-structure. The underlying soil may modify the earthquake input motion and change structural responses. Specific effects of the input motion shall also not be ignored. In this study, seismic demands of asymmetric buildings considering soil-structure interaction (SSI) under near-fault ground motions are evaluated. The building is modeled as an idealized single-story structure. The soil beneath the building is modeled by non-linear finite elements in the two states of loose and dense sands both compared with the fixed-base state. The infinite boundary conditions are modelled using viscous boundary elements. The effects of traditional and yield displacement-based (YDB) approaches of strength and stiffness distributions are considered on seismic demands. In the YDB approach, the stiffness considered in seismic design depends on the strength. The results show that the decrease in the base shear considering soft soil induced SSI when the YDB approach is assumed results only in the center of rigidity to control torsional responses. However, for fixed-base structures and those on dense soils both centers of strength and rigidity are controlling.
The record of 137 patients with spontaneous pneumothorax seen at Busan National University Hospital during past 3years were reviewed to study the possible pathogenesis and its effective management. and the results obtained as follows; 1] The incidence of the "spontaneous" pneumothorax which developed without underlying pathology was 13-1%. The majority of those cases was considered as the result of rupture of subpleural blebs. 2] The incidence of secondary pneumothorax which developed with underlying pathology was 50.0%, in which 42.3% was combined with pulmonary tuberculosis and 8, 0% was combined with pulmonary infection. The traumatic pneumothorax was developed in 36-5% of total series. 3] In age distribution, there was pronounced difference between spontaneous and secondary pneumothorax. The majority of spontaneous pneumothorax cases was 20-30 decade and tall and tall and thin in body structure. In secondary pneumothorax, however, the incidence was relatively high in age group more than 50 years old. 4] The incidence of pneumothorax combined with pulmonary tuberculosis was particularly high in our country, and the cause of pneumothorax was seemed due to the rupture of subpleural caseous foci in some cases, but the majority was seen due to the rupture of emphysematous blebs which were formed with a pathological process of chronic tuberculosis. 5]Closed [tube] thoracotomy was the main therapeutic approach of choice in the great majority ,of pneumothorax in our series with the relapse rate of 19.6%. However, open thoracotomy and adequate surgical procedures should be undertaken in patients with continuous air leakage over 7 days and recurrent attack of pneumothorax.

Reliability and performance in metal gate/high-k device with multiple gate dielectrics were investigated. MOSFETs with a thin $HfSiO_x$ layer on a thermal Si02 dielectric as gate dielectrics exhibit excellent mobility and low interface trap density. However, the distribution of threshold voltages of $HfSiO_x/SiO_2$ stack devices were wider than those of $SiO_2$ and $HfSiO_x$ single layer devices due to the penetration of Hf and/or intermixing of $HfSiO_x$ with underlying $SiO_2$. The results of TZDB and SILC characteristics suggested that a certain portion of $HfSiO_x$ layer reacted with the underlying thick $SiO_2$ layer, which in turn affected the reliability characteristics.
