  • In this study, a design program for ventilation requirements of a longitudinal raod tunnel were developed and investigated. The control volume method was applied to calculate the local air velocity and the local concentration distribution of pollutants, CO, $NO_x$, soot along the tunnel for various tunnel ventilation system. This program was validated by comparing with the practical design data for the road tunnel ventilation system. The calculation results were in good agreement with the practical design data.

  • Characteristics of vibration propagation of borehole blasting were analyzed with 578 borehole vibration data obtained from 23 sites which were used in tunnel and underground space design, and 221 tunnel vibration data fron 4 sites of tunnel under construction. Analysis results on the damping of vibration velocity show that site factors in borehole blasting were higher than those in tunnel blasting. And the critical charge calculated from regression equations at large scaled distance was lower in borehole blasting. Dominant frequency was in the range of 30∼60Hz for the borehole blasting and 60∼90Hz for the tunnel blasting. As a conclusion, the borehole blasting data should not be used on the tunnel blasting design without careful statistical analysis.

  • Recently, According to increased tunnel accident, a matter of concern in tunnel fire safety is on an interesting trend. In case of tunnel fire, Evacuation is a primary factor for refugee safety. Therefore safety measures should be taken to increase capability of evacuation. Evacuation walking speed and characteristics of movement in tunnel is differ from building or outdoor site so, these characteristics must be considered in tunnel safety planning. In this study has performed to evaluate the smoke movement and characteristics of evacuation by full-scale test method. and aimed for basic data establishment in characteristics of evacuation for tunnel safety system design.

  • A method of tunnel analysis for a new type of tunnel construction method (ACLCM, Automatic Concrete Lining Construction Method) is presented here. ACLCM is an unique tunnel construction method which provides concrete lining at the end of shield machine by extruding concrete into the space between the excavated ground surface and the inner form (Automatic Concrete Lining Machine). Since behaviors of tunnel and the surrounding soils are greatly influenced by the construction method, existing tunnel design methods may not be applicable to the design of ACLCM tunnel. In this study, a method of ACLCM tunnel analysis is suggested to provide the prediction of behavior of ACLCM tunnel and surrounding soils as well as to check up the safety during the construction and after the completion of ACLCM tunnel

  • This paper considers the problem of designing logical tunnels in virtual private networks considering QoS guarantee which restricts the number of tunnel hops for each traffic routing. The previous researches focused on the design of logical tunnel itself and Steiner-tree based solution algorithms were proposed. However, we show that for some objective settings it is not sufficient and is necessary to consider both physical and logical connectivity at the same time. Thereupon, the concept of the layered network is applied to the logical tunnel design problem in virtual private networks. The layered network approach considers the design of logical tunnel as well as its physical routing and we propose a modified branch-and-price algorithm which is known to solve layered network design problems effectively. To show the performance of the proposed algorithm, computational experiments have been done and the results show that the proposed algorithm solves the given problem efficiently and effectively.

  • In this study, the whole deformation conditions of domestic old tunnels and reinforcement methods for deformation tunnels were investigated and analysed, and the present conditions, occurrence cause and reinforcement methods of cavity behind the tunnel lining were investigated and analysed comprehensively. The deformation causes of domestic old tunnels could be classified in three kinds : change of earth pressure operating tunnel ground, material problem of concrete lining, mistake of design and construction. As a result of analysis, the tunnel deformation was occurred by not specific cause but various cause As a result of investigation for 455 domestic tunnel data, more than 70% of the tunnel deformation was related to leakage and the other deformation cause also accompanied leakage mostly. An applied reinforcement method was related to leakage and flood prevention measures, but application of reinforcement method for boundary area between tunnel and ground and tunnel periphery which influence on the tunnel stability was still defective. The cavity of domestic old tunnel occupied about 16% of the total tunnel length and about 68% of cavity was located in the crown of tunnel, and besides, the occurrence cause of cavity was analysed to design, construction and management cause. The filling method for cavity using filling material was comprehensively appling to cavity behind tunnel lining.

  • In this study, the concept of safety impact assessment to achieve 'Design-for-Safety' in design phase is introduced. For this purpose, safety impact assessment model was devised and a methodology using the risk-based safety impact assessment approach for NATM of tunnel projects is suggested. The suggested methodology includes safety information survey, classification of safety impact factors caused by design and construction, and quantitative estimation of magnitude and frequency of safety impact factors. A real-world case study on the safety impact assessment of a tunnel construction project is also provided in the paper.

  • Until now, NATM(New Austrian Tunneling Method) has been increasingly developed based on concept of making use of ground as support. Also, NATM in its essence is a method of risk based on monitoring behaviour of tunnel. This Monitoring is irreplaceable for the quality construction of tunnel, and safety of tunnel itself. Pre-reinforcement ahead of a tunnel face using long steel pipes in NATM, known as the RPUM(Reinforced Protective Umbrella Method), is the auxiliary method to sustain the stability of a tunnel face and reduce the ground settlements. Since design of RPUM has been dependent on the empirical design, it is necessary to develop the improved design methods. In this study, to understand behaviour of steel pipes, it is monitored displacement of tunnel crown, axial force of rock bolt, displacement and axial stress of steel pipes. Also, in order to clarify the mechanical behaviour and RPUM effects, 3-Dimensional numerical analysis is performed that various cases of different parameter combinations including original length and repeated length of steel pipes, installation width and angle, repeated length of steel. In the results of comparison monitoring with analysis, it is suggested more economical and efficient design technique than empirical design methods.

  • The spatial distribution of design parameters greatly affects tunnel behavior during and after construction, as well as in the long-term temporal responses. However, the tunnel design parameters commonly used in numerical modeling tend to be representative or average values of global-scale properties. Furthermore, the uncertainty and spatial variation of the design parameters increase as the tunnel scale increases. Consequently, the probability of failure also increases. In order to achieve structural stability in large-section tunnels, the design framework must take into consideration the quantitative effect of design parameter variations on tunnel behavior. Therefore, this paper suggests a statistical approach to numerical modeling to explore the effect of spatially distributed design parameters in a circular tunnel. Also, the effect of spatial variation in the lining strength is studied in this paper. The numerical results suggest that the deformation around the tunnel increases with an increase in the variation of the design parameters.
