A multiscale method is presented for analysis of thin slab structures in which the microstructures can not be reduced to two-dimensional plane stress models and thus three dimensional treatment of microstructures is necessary. This method is based on the classical asymptotic expansion multiscale approach but with consideration of the special geometric characteristics of the slab structures. This is achieved via a special form of multiscale asymptotic expansion of displacement field. The expanded three dimensional displacement field only exhibits in-plane periodicity and the thickness dimension is in the global scale. Consequently by employing the multiscale asymptotic expansion approach the global macroscopic structural problem and the local microscopic unit cell problem are rationally set up. It is noted that the unit cell is subjected to the in-plane periodic boundary conditions as well as the traction free conditions on the out of plane surfaces of the unit cell. The variational formulation and finite element implementation of the unit cell problem are discussed in details. Thereafter the in-plane material response is systematically characterized via homogenization analysis of the proposed special unit cell problem for different microstructures and the reasoning of the present method is justified. Moreover the present multiscale analysis procedure is illustrated through a plane stress beam example.

The three dimensional analysis of Framed-Tube structures is neither easy nor efficient because of longer computational time, large memory requirement, tedious input preparation and bulky output. An efficient analysis model for framed-tube structure is proposed in this study. The proposed model can save the computational effort by using the assumption of the rigid floor diaphragm effect and matrix condensation technique. Moreover, it is develpoed by assembling two dimensional frames using the link degrees of freedom which are temporary used to satisfy the vertical displacement compatibility at the corners of a framed-tube. The accuracy and the efficiency of this analytical model is established by comparing with the results using the computer code SAPIV which is based on the three dimensional finite element model.

Proximity-coupled open-end microstrip interconnections in bilevel planar structures are investigated through three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain(3D-FDTD) method. Three types of EMC (electromagnetically coupled) microstriplines are considered, collinear lines, transverse lines and modified EMC structure. From the analyzed results, it is found that these EMC interconnections have the coupling coefficient enough to interconnect lines in bilevel structures over a broad-band. The computed results of the modified EMC structure was compared with measurement from physical model and the computed results of via hole interconnection.
The current paper presents the numerical blind prediction of nonlinear seismic response of two full-scale, three dimensional, one-story reinforced concrete structures subjected to bidirectional earthquake simulations on shaking table. Simulations were carried out at the laboratories of LNEC (Laboratorio Nacional de Engenharia Civil) in Lisbon, Portugal. The study was motivated by participation in the blind prediction contest of shaking table tests, organized by the challenge committee of the 15th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering. The test specimens, geometrically identical, designed for low and high ductility levels, were subjected to subsequent earthquake motions of increasing intensity. Three dimensional nonlinear analytical models were implemented and subjected to the input base motions. Reasonably accurate reproduction of the measured displacement response was obtained through appropriate modeling. The goodness of fit between analytical and measured results depended on the details of the analytical models.
This paper adopts autoregressive (AR) model to simulate the wind velocity of spatial three-dimensional fields in accordance with the time and space dependent characteristics of the 3-D fields. Based on the built MATLAB programming, this paper discusses in detail the issues of the AR model deduced by matrix form in the simulation and proposes the corresponding solving methods: the over-relaxation iteration to solve the large sparse matrix equations produced by large number of degrees of freedom of structures; the improved Gauss formula to calculate the numerical integral equations which integral functions contain oscillating functions; the mixed congruence and central limit theorem of Lindberg-Levy to generate random numbers. This paper also develops a method of ascertaining the rank of the AR model. The numerical examples show that all those methods are stable and reliable, which can be used to simulate the wind velocity of all large span structures in civil engineering.
This paper describes the development of a reliability-based optimum design technique for such three dimensional tubular frames as off shore structures. The objective function is formulated for the structural weight. Constraints that probability of failure for the critical sections does not exceed the allowable probability of failure are set up. In the evaluation of the probability of failure, fatigue as well as buckling and plasticity failure are taken into account and the mean-value first-order second-moment method(MVFOSM) is applied for its calculation. In order to reduce the computing time required for the repeated structural analysis in the optimization process, reanalysis method is also applied. Application to two and three dimensional simple frame structures is performed. The influence of material properties, external forces, allowable failure probabilities and interaction between external forces on the optimum design is investigated.

The device simulator (BANDIS) which can analyze efficiently the electrical characteristics of the semiconductor devices under the three dimensional stationary conditions on the IBM PC was developed. Poisson, electon and hole continuity equations are discretized y te galerkin method using a tetrahedron as af finite element. The frontal solver which has exquisite data structures and advanced input/output functions is dused for the matrix solver which needs the highest cost in the three dimensional device simulation. The discretization method of the continuity equations used in BANDIS are compared with that of the scharfetter-gummel method used in the commercial three-dimensional device. To verify an accuracy and the efficiency of the discretization method, the simulation results of the PN junction diode and the BJT from BANDIS are compared with those of the commercial three-dimensiional device simulator such as DAVINCI. The maximum relative error within 2% and the average number of iterations needed for the convergence is decreased by more than 20%. The total simulation time of the BJT with 25542 nodes is decreased to about 60% compared with that of DAVINCI.
Computer aided molecular modeling can help to predict the three dimensional structure of the polypeptide without the sample. The study on soybean Bowman-Birk protease inhibitor (SBI) is valuable, because it has been recently known that SBI possesses anticarcinogenic activities and immune-stimulating properties. SBI has several isoinhibitors, whose isolation and characterization were reported in 1990. Among these, DII inhibits trypsin only. The different inhibitory specificities cannot be explained only by their different primary sequences, but is possible with further assistance by the study on their different three dimensional structures. The study on the three dimensional structure of DII using homology method is reported in this paper.

This paper describes an automatic finite element mesh generation for finite element analysis of three-dimensional structures. It is consisting of fuzzy knowledge processing, bubble meshing and solid geometry modeler. This novel mesh generation process consists of three subprocesses: (a) definition of geometric model, i.e. analysis model, (b) generation of bubbles, and (c) generation of elements. One of commercial solid modelers is employed for three-dimensional solid structures. Bubble is generated if its distance from existing bubble points is similar to the bubble spacing function at the point. The bubble spacing function is well controlled by the fuzzy knowledge processing. The Delaunay method is introduced as a basic tool for element generation. Automatic generation of finite element for three-dimensional solid structures holds great benefits for analyses. Practical performances of the present system are demonstrated through several mesh generations for 3D geometry.

At the initial design stage, for rapid evaluation of strength of ship structures, finite element analysis using beam elements is carried out in general. In beam modeling of ship structures, brackets are usually represented by rigid elements to simplify the analysis. Extent of rigid ends, which is called as a span point, can be determined from the three kinds of view points, i.e., bending, shearing and axial deformation. In this paper, a 2-dimensional novel beam element is developed and a method to replace the 3-dimensional analysis with 2-dimensional analysis is proposed. The developed novel beam element named rigid-ended beam element can consider the effect of three kinds of span points within one element, which was impossible in modeling with the ordinary beam element. Calculated results for the portal frame using the rigid-ended beam element agree with the results using membrane elements. And also, the proposed semi 3-dimensional analysis method which includes two step analysis using influence coefficients shows good accuracy. Structural analysis using the rigid-ended beam element and the semi 3-dimensional method is revealed to have good computing efficiency due to unnecessity of elements corresponding to the brackets and simplification of 3-dimensional analysis.
