Copper pipes have been widely used as components of System Air-Conditioner due to high thermal conductivity. This system consists of 150 pipes, which are approximately 10m long in total. Dimensional changes occur during pipe processing such as expansion, reduction and bending. This processing induces changes in length of pipes and makes dimensional differences from original pipes. The summation of the differences of pipes components leads to make huge cumulative dimensional differences. The cumulative differences can cause serious problems such as crack, refrigerant leakage. However the differences have not been considered so far. To satisfy target quality of the system, it is essential to predict and calibrate the differences. In this paper, the changes in dimension were predicted using FEM and it was found that cumulative differences could cause indesirable stress during assembly process. As a result, dimensional differences or indesirable stress could be reduced using the proposed method.

When a high-energy ultrasound propagates through a solid body that contains a crack or a delamination, the two faces of the defect do not ordinarily vibrate in unison, and dissipative phenomena such as friction, rubbing and clapping between the faces will convert some of the vibrational energy to heat. By combining this heating effect with infrared imaging, one can detect a subsurface defect in material efficiently. In this paper a detection of the welding defect of thin SUS 304 plates using the UIR (ultrasonic infrared imaging) technology is described. A low frequency (20kHz) ultrasonic transducer was used to infuse the welded thin SUS 304 plates with a short pulse of sound for 280ms. The ultrasonic source has a maximum power of 2kW. The surface temperature of the area under inspection is imaged by a thermal infrared camera that is coupled to a fast frame grabber in a computer. The hot spots, which are a small area around the defect tip and heated up highly, are observed. From the sequence of the thermosonic images, the location of defective or inhomogeneous regions in the welded thin SUS 304 plates can be detected easily.

During the past few years, several incidents of freight car wheel failure during operation have occurred due to fatigue crack and overheating from braking. Tensile residual stress on the wheel tread creates an environment conducive to the formation of thermal cracks that may threaten the safety of train operations. It is important to investigate the residual stress on wheels in order to prevent derailment. In the present paper, the residual stress on wheels is measured using the x-ray diffraction system and the residual stress is analyzed using FEM. The result shows that the residual stress on the wheel rim is lower than that on the wheel tread center and the stress on over-braked wheels changes from compression residual stress to tensile residual stress.
The temperature variation of concrete pavement at early-age significantly affects the initiation and movement of joint cracks. For this analysis, we have built on IIA(Incheon International Airport) concrete pavement construction zone, and we measured the temperature and movement of the concrete slabs by using thermocouples, moisture sensors, V/W strain gages, and Demac discs. The analysis results showed that pavement's temperature significantly affected the joint movement. The widths of the joint cracks increased at evening and early in the morning when the temperature dropped but, those decreased in the day time when the temperature rose because of the effect of thermal expansion of the concrete slabs. The movements of the joints where the cracks never developed showed opposite trend to the cracked joints.

SOI (Silicon-On-Insulator) substrates were fabricated with varying annealing temperature of $25-660^{\circ}C$ by a linear annealing method, which was modified RTA process using a linear shape heat source. The annealing method was applied to Si ∥ $SiO_2$/Si pair pre-contacted at room temperature after wet cleaning process. The bonding strength of SOI substrates was measured by two methods of Razor-blade crack opening and direct tensile test. The fractured surfaces after direct tensile test were also investigated by the optical microscope as well as $\alpha$-STEP gauge. The interface bonding energy was 1140mJ/m$^2$ at the annealing temperature of $430^{\circ}C$. The fracture strength was about 21MPa at the temperature of $430^{\circ}C$. These mechanical properties were not reported with the conventional furnace annealing or rapid thermal annealing method at the temperature below $500^{\circ}C$. Our results imply that the bonded wafer pair could endure CMP (Chemo-Mechanical Polishing) or Lapping process without debonding, fracture or dopant redistribution.
Silica wet gels were prepared ken water glass ($29\;wt%\;SiO_{2}$) by using Amberlite as a ion exchange resin. After washing in distilled water, the wet gels were further aged in a solution of TEOS/EtOH to strengthen of 3-dimensional network structure. As increase TEOS content in aging solution, BET surface area and porosity of the ambient dried silica aerogels were significantly decreased, and average pore diameter was also decreased 30 nm to -10 nm. Also, higher density and compressive strength were obtained in case of higher TEOS content. This is due to precipitation of $SiO_{2}$ nano particles by TEOS. Hence, TEOS addition plays an important role of both strengthening and stiffness of silica wet gel network. By adding over 30 vol% TEOS, a crack-free monolithic silica aerogel tiles were obtained and its density, compressive strength, and thermal conductivity were shown $0.232g/cm^{3}$, 7.3 MPa, and 0.029 W/mk, respectivly.

Partial penetration welding joint is defined as groove welds welded from one side, without steel backing or groove welds welded from both sides but without back gouging. So it has an unwelded portion at the root of the weld. Study of partial penetration weldment fracture behavior includes residual stress analysis and fracture analysis. The J-integral loses its path independency in residual stress field. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce a new J-integral, J, which is defined including the effect of plastic deformation and thermal strain. In this study, theoretical formulation and program were developed for the evaluation of J-integral for the crack tip located in the weldment. Evaluations of fracture behavior were performed for partial penetration multi-pass weldment of 25.4mm thick plate by J-integral. From a point of fracture in partial penetration multi-pass welding, it seemed to be better to control root face smaller than 6.35mm.

The fire damage of building wouid effect on the safety of structure. When the reinforced concrete structure is heated by high temperature due to the fire, the structural resisting-force will be decreased. In a way, it is a requirement to use high strength concrete for high rise building. Particularly, fire resistance properties of high-strength concrete is more important than normal strength concretes. The fire outbreak of a high strength concrete by sudden temperature rise is a main problem, and causes crack by thermal stress, loading to the deterioration of the durability. In this study, normal and high strength mortar were exposed to a high temperature environment. And than fundamental data for the character change of concrete heated highly were presented by measuring compressive strength of concrete with polypropylene and vinylon fiber, before and after heating. As the results, it is proven that high strength mortar with polypropylene and vinylon fiber for prevents deterioration of durability by fiber.

Cross-drilling on the brake disc is generally known as a way of improving cooling efficiency. In other theories, cross-drilled holes act like a path of gas or water and are also known that they can reduce fading and wetting of brake rotors. However, in disc rotors with cross-drilling, thermal crack phenomena have been reported more frequently and more manufacturing cost should be paid than non cross-drilled disc rotors. In this study, to examine various effects of cross-drilling on the brake disc, two kinds of brake disc rotors, cross-drilled and non cross-drilled, were used in computational fluid dynamic analyses and dynamometer tests.

Heat-resistance of W/$Y_2O_3$ as throat insert material was evaluated to develop rocket motor keeping thrust uniformly under condition of high-temperature, high-pressure and long-burn time. Test was conducted with varying burn time, and test results were compared with CIT. Test showed that ablation rate was decreased according as burn time was increased, and that ablation rate of W/$Y_2O_3$ was about 55 % of CIT. Macro/micro structures of throat insert did not show a peculiar phenomenon by increased burn time. In addition, the vacuum heat treatment is effective for the prevention of crack in throat insert.
