A study on improper notions appeared in dealing with quotient and remainder in division for decimal numbers in Korean elementary math textbooks and its improvements (우리나라 초등학교 수학 교과서의 소수 나눗셈에서의 몫과 나머지 취급에서 나타나는 부적절한 관념과 그 개선에 관한 연구)

  • Current textbooks may provide students and teachers with three improper notions related to the quotient and the remainder in division for decimal numbers as in the following. First, only the calculated results in (natural numbers)${\div}$(natural numbers) is the quotient. Second, when the quotient and the remainder are obtained in division for decimal numbers, the quotient is natural number and the remainder is unique. Third, only when the quotient cannot be divided exactly, the quotient can be rounded off. These can affect students and teachers on their notions of division for decimal numbers, so improvements are needed for to break it. For these improvements, the following measures are required. First, in the curriculum guidebook, the meaning of the quotient and the remainder in division for decimal numbers should be presented clearly, for preventing the possibility of the construction of such improper notions. Second, examples, problems, and the like should be presented in the textbooks enough to break such improper notions. Third, the didactical intention should be presented clearly with respect to the quotient and the remainder in division for decimal numbers in teacher's manual.

  • For the instruction of units dealing with the conic section, the most important factor that we need to consider is the connections. In other words, the algebraic approach and the geometric approach should be instructed in parallel at the same time. In particular, for the students of low proficiency who are not good at algebraic operation, the geometric approach that employs visual representation, expressing the conic section's characteristic in a dynamic manner, is an important and effective method. For this, during this research, to suggest the importance of dynamic visual representation based on GeoGebra in teaching Quadratic Curve, we taught an experimental class that suggests the instruction method which maximizes the visual representation and analyzed changes in the representation of students by analyzing the part related to the unit of a parabola from units dealing with a conic section in the "Geometry and Vector" textbook and activity book.

Extraction of Learning Contexts and Analysis of Informatics Textbooks in Order to Teach The Computational Thinking in Middle School (계산적 사고 교육을 위한 중학교의 학습요소 추출과 정보 교과서 분석)

  • Computational thinking has been a powerful key recently to open a new paradigm era in the curriculum of Informatics subject and the community of computer science education. But the quality and quantity of domestic research about it has been very poor in comparison with other countries. Therefore, this study focuses on the definition, learning steps and learning contexts about computational thinking education using some professional questionnaires and analyses of related other countries' literatures. The learning contexts that were extracted by several previous works could be used as the factor to analyze the curriculum of Informatics subject and textbooks in middle school; these could be helpful to teach the ability of computational thinking in middle school. Results of these questionnaires show that the three steps and 13 learning contexts of computational thinking education are properly well-formulated. The 5 of 13 learning contexts, such as data collection, are missing in 2009 revised-Informatics curriculum in middle school as well as the seven Informatics textbooks that used in middle school contained 10 of 13 learning contexts for computational thinking education.

A Study on the Fitness of Content of Experiment and Practice of Home Economics in Middle School (중학교 가정과 실험.실습 내용의 적정성에 관한 조사연구)

  • This thesis has two objects: Firstly, the arrangement of basic data and formulating a system of experiment and practice in home economics and Secondly, the groping the way of improving the problems raised in the home economics education spot. A questinaire is used as the research tools for the fitness of content, of experiment and practice in the home economics and SPSS/PC(sup)+ and Scheffe Test are used for investigation. The results are as follows. 1. Students recognize the importance of experiment & practice more than the teacher. In the type of middle school teachers engaged in the girl’s middle school recognize the importance of experiment & practice more than those of coeducation middle school. 2. The percent of the school which executes over the 50% of experiment & practice in the contents of text book is 70%. The most numerous in the sphere of guiding is ‘seperate practice of student’. The reason of not executing the experiment & practice are ‘the concentration of the theory education’and ‘the lack of equipment and tools’3. Practice room for cooking was mostly established, but practice room of sewing was established only 5.6%. The contents of textbook for clothing sphere can be executed by using the equipment & tools of school only 9.2%. 4. 40% of the students feel that the content level of experiment & practice is difficult. Most of the students feel that the content level of experiment & practice, especially in the sphere of clothing, in unproper on the level fitness of contents by grade. 5. Most of the students assent on the positive effect for the degree and the most important cause for its not contributing to the everday life is the lack of experiment & practice in school. 6. Most of the students feels positively on the interest degree of content and the students who though much of the experment & practice feels positively on the interest degree of content.

Development of a Teaching and Learning Plan for a Communication Unit for Family Members and Its Effect on Teenagers' Functional Communications and Relational Satisfaction with Their Parents (부모자녀간 의사소통과 관계향상을 위한 교수.학습 과정안 개발 및 적용: 중학교 1학년 '가족구성원간의 의사소통' 단원을 중심으로)

  • This research explored the importance of conflict resolution in communication between adolescents and their parents. A teaching and learning plan on communication using the Active listening, I-message method and no-lose conflict resolution method was developed and applied to teaching the 'Communication among Family Members' unit in the middle school home economics and technology textbook. The experimental class of 203 students using the active listening, I message and no-lose conflict resolution method in communication was compared with a comparative class of 163 students using only the active listening and I message method, investigating the amounts of communication, conflicts, functional communication and degree of satisfaction the students perceived regarding relationships with their parents via pre and post tests. Both groups showed significant increases in their amounts of communication and functional communication. However, only the experimental class showed an increase in their degree of relationship satisfaction with their parents. Both groups evaluated the lesson positively.

Comparison of Zhusang Between as Discovered in a Medical Book Excavated in China and Other Classical Books (중국 출토의서에 보이는 '제상(諸傷)'과 전래문헌의 비교 고찰)

  • Objectives : This paper studies Zhushang, which is the name of a disease found in excavated books. Zhusang is the first disease listed in Wushierbingfang, which is a medical textbook excavated at Mawangdui, and Zhusang was followed by diseases such as Jinshang and Renshang. The paper studies what disease each of the word is refering to in terms of graphonomy, and compared the difference of their treatment from other classical texts. Methods : The scope of the study of this paper includes the excavated textbooks that seem to contain any disease related to Zhusang, and the two major text books of these are Wushierbingfang and Wuweihandaiyijian. Then Shennongbencao jing, which is the one of the earlier books on herbology, and Bencao gangmu, which was written based on the former, wer used to make comparisons. Parts in Donguibogam that seem to be related to the parts in the excavated texts were also compared. The study was done by first performing historical research on the names of the diseases in the excavated books, and compared them with the contents of the classical texts. Results : The Zhushang discovered in Wushierbingfang refers to wounds caused by metal or wood. It was interesting how they created a word for diseases depending on the cause. Only Jinshang is found in Wuweihandaiyijian, and the fact that different causes gave way to different names tells us that they had corresponding treatment. The categorization of Zhushang, Jinshang, and Renshang is corresponded better in Donguibogam than Chinese medical books.

Analysis of Inquisitive Tendency of 2009 Revised Middle School Informatics Textbooks (2009 개정 중학교 정보 교과서의 탐구적 경향 분석)

  • In this paper, we study the inquisitive tendency in informatics textbooks for middle school students. These textbooks were written in 2009, and have been adopted in 2013 as part of the curriculum. The research is based on six textbooks, which passed qualification tests, and is mainly focused on the section 'composition and movement of information equipment', which covers contents for the student's major field of study. Romey analysis was employed to analyze inquisitive tendency in four sections - text, data, activity and evaluation. The results illustrated that some textbooks were organized in a way that exhibited a low level of inquisitive tendency for students, and took an authoritative tone. The section 'activity' showed the highest level of inquisitive tendency and the 'text' showed the lowest level. Some sections in the textbooks were found to have zero Romey measures, which stress the need for improvement.

  • In 21st century, it is essential to understand Nature of Science (NOS) related to science educational curriculum. The study analyzed Earth Science components of third- through sixth-grade science textbooks in terms of incorporated NOS themes and their relative proportions. Modified analysis methods of Chiappetta et al. (1991) and Lee (2012) are devised and adapted. The results of analysis indicates that the current elementary school textbooks include and explain all the four themes of NOS, but do not include sub-areas of each theme of NOS in a balanced way. In addition, the themes of NOS in Earth Science are not treated equally among different grades. Such results warrant the efforts to include balanced themes of NOS into elementary school science textbooks with the ultimate goal of fully and properly comprehending NOS to the students.

Pre-service Elementary Teacher' Knowledge understanding and Teaching-learning type about 'stratum and rock' ('지층과 암석'에 대한 초등 예비 교사의 지식 이해와 교수유형)

  • The study aims to figure out pre-service elementary teachers' knowledge understanding on 'stratum and rock' as well as teaching-learning types on the same topic. A total of 65 seniors in an advanced science education course at B University of Education joined the research to fulfill the purpose above. With PCK classification framework, the study examined pre-service teachers' knowledge understanding on 'stratum and rock' while it analyzed how the teachers would teach the given topic to students. The results of the study are presented as follows. First, it was observed that the pre-service elementary teachers have a great understanding on 'stratum and rock' that would be taught via a science textbook for elementary fourth graders. However, regarding terms in 'shale and limestone', they appeared to have a relatively short understanding. Second, PCK elements of the pre-service teachers related to 'stratum and rock' were analyzed and according to the results, the teachers would be interested in teaching model selecting in the teaching-learning strategy field while they would be well aware of how important it is for them to perform an experiment in a teaching process. The teachers also appeared to understand that the teacher question can be mutual complementary during class. However, it turned out that the teachers would have a very much low understanding on learners' prior knowledge as they particularly believe that learning could be significantly affected by the learners' perception level as well as their learning interest and motive. Third, the pre-service elementary teachers were told to design teaching plans on 'stratum and rock' so that the study could find out what learning-teaching methods the teachers would adopt to teach the topic. It was learned that the teachers would proceed with the class basically by giving the learners a descriptive explanation on the topic and also by using pictures and drawings to enhance the learners' understanding during the class.

The Effects of Inquiry Oriented Instruction on the Learning of A rea Formulas (수학적 탐구학습이 넓이공식의 학습에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of inquiry oriented instruction on the learning of area formulas. For this purpose, current elementary mathematics textbook(2007 revised version) which deal with area formulas was reviewed and then the experimental research on inquiry oriented instruction in area formulas was conducted. The results of this study as follow; First, there was no significant effect of inquiry oriented instruction on the mathematical achievement in area formula problems. Second, there was no significant effect on the memorization of area formulas. Third, there was significant effect on the generalization of area formulas. Forth, there was significant effect on the methods of generalization of area formulas. Fifth, through inquiry activities, the students can learn mathematical ideas and develop creative mathematical ideas. Finally, implications for teaching area formulas through inquiry activity was discussed. We have to introduce new area formula through prior area formulas which had been studied, and make the students inquire the connection between each area formulas.
