Temperature and Salinity Distribution in Deukryang Bay in Summer of 1992-93 (1992-93년 하계 득량만의 수온과 염분의 분포)

  • As a part of the multidisciplinary oceanographic study for the productivity enhancement in Deukryang Bay, temperature and salinity were observed from 1992 through 1993. From the results, only the data in summer of two years are compared. Owing to the contrary meteorolgical conditions in both summers both of temperature and salinity had the patterns of horizontal distributions quite different from each other. In 1992 with low precipitation, there was a tendency of temperature increase and salinity decrease from the bay mouth towards the bay head. In 1993 when the air temperature was abnormally low, isotherms and isotherms tended to be parallel to the local u3s of the bay where the warmer and less saline water distributed along the western coast. Reduced solar radiation and increase in the relative importance of the distribution of properties along the current that was parallel to the axis of the bay could be responsible for this result. Vertical structures of both temperature and salinity were dependent on the stirring effect of tidal current. Stratification was destroyed during the spring tide while it was formed during the neap tide.

The Influence of Water Temperature and Salinity on Filtration Rates of the Hard Clam, Meretrix petechialis (말백합의 연령별 여과율에 미치는 수온과 염분의 영향)

  • This study was performed to describe the influence of water temperature and salinity on the filtration rate of the hard clam, Meretrix petechialis. The filtration rates of hard clams showed significant differences depending on both water temperature and age group (two-way ANOVA, p < 0.001). The filtration rate of all the hard clams, aged from 1 to 4 years, was generally reduced in low temperature range ( $5-15^{\circ}C$). As the water temperature increased, the filtration rate increased exponentially. The filtration rate was relatively high in $20-30^{\circ}C$ water temperature range, but rapidly decreased again at around $35^{\circ}C$. Variations in the data for filtration rates of hard clams, relative to age and changing water temperature, were used to determine the temperature coefficient $Q_{10}$ in each water temperature range. In $5-15^{\circ}C$ temperature range, every age group showed the highest $Q_{10}$ figure. It was found that on the whole, the higher the water temperature was, the lower the number of $Q_{10}$ was. Regardless of age, the number of $Q_{10}$ was higher in the lower water temperature range. In $25-35^{\circ}C$ temperature range, the number of $Q_{10}$ was less than 1.00 in all age groups, implying that this is the range in which the filtration rate decreased. Variations in the filtration rate also showed very clear differences (two-way ANOVA, p < 0.001) according to changing salinity and age. All the age groups, from 1 to 4 year olds, showed low filtration rates at both low salinity (10-15 psu) and high salinity (40 psu). The highest filtration rate was recorded at 30 psu, and relatively high filtration rates were found around 30 psu. However, the Student-Newman-Keuls post hoc multiple comparison test found that the hard clams in the 1-year group showed high filtration rates in a relatively narrower salinity range compared to those in the 2, 3, and 4 year groups. In other words, hard clams in the 2, 3, and 4 year groups showed high filtration rates at higher levels of salinity.

Effects of temperature and salinity on egg development and larval settlement of an invasive ascidian species, Herdmania momus (Savigny, 1816)

  • The effects of temperature and salinity on egg development and settlement of the ascidian Herdmania momus were investigated. Adult specimens were collected from the Dodu Yacht facility in Jeju Island, Korea(33°30'30.54"N, 126°27'55.46"E) in August 2018. Egg development and larval settlement were observed and recorded at 8 h intervals using a stereomicroscope, under nine temperature (10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, and 34℃), and four salinity regimens (28, 30, 32, and 34 psu). The highest hatching rate (82.8±7%) was observed at 32 psu and 25℃ and the lowest hatching rate (1.0±2%) was at 34 psu and 13℃. The developmental rate (0.222±0.0994) was highest at 28 psu and 28℃, and lowest (0.016±0.008) at 30 psu and 13℃. The highest settlement success rate (77.1±5%) was at 32psu and 25℃ and the lowest(0.1±1.0%) was at 30psu, and 13℃. The rate of settlement(0.080±0.000) was highest at 28psu and 28℃, and lowest(0.013±0.000) at 30psu and 13℃. Both hatching and settlement success rates increased as temperature increased and tended to decrease beyond an optimal temperature range. Herdmania momus preferred 30-34 psu salinity and 22-25℃ temperature. This study provides baseline information about the life history of H. momus, and important data to control the damage caused by the increase in number and distribution of this invasive ascidian.

Effects of Water Temperature and Salinity on the Egg Development and Larvae of Sevenband grouper, Epinephelus septemfasciatus (수온과 염분이 능성어(Epinephelus septemfasciatus)의 난 발생 및 자어에 미치는 영향)

  • We studied the effects of temperature and salinity on the egg development and larvae of sevenband grouper Epinephelus septemfasciatus under sea cage culturing condition. In regard to rearing environment, the water temperature is $21.5{\sim}23.5^{\circ}C$ (mean $22.0{\pm}0.05^{\circ}C$) and the salinity is 32.0~33.0 psu (mean $32.5{\pm}0.05psu$). The time of egg development was positively proportional to water temperature with 29 hrs, 27 hrs, 24 hrs, 17 hrs, 15 hrs after fertilization in $15^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$, $35^{\circ}C$ respectively. Each of the salinity hatching rate was 80% in the section of 15 psu, 81.8% in the section of 25 psu, 89.1% in the section of 30 psu, and 79.1% in the section of 35 psu. All things considered, the highest hatching rate appeared in the range of the section of 25~30 psu. Abnormalities of low salinity section, such as 15 psu (20.0%) and 20 psu (18.2%), was lower than the abnormalities of 35 psu that belongs to high salt section. The relation between the time of egg development (t:hour) and water temperature ($T:^{\circ}C$) was represented by the mathematical formulae. The mean biological minimum temperature was $5.4^{\circ}C$.

  • FK506BP (FK506 binding protein 12) is a small peptide with a single FK506BP domain. It is involved in suppression of immune response, oxidative stress and inflammation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the gene expression of FK506BP in red seabream (Pagrus major) exposure to low water temperature (8℃, 33 psu) and low salinity (20℃, 10 psu). Results showed that, the expression of FK506BP was significantly increased in the experiment groups, such as low water temperature (8℃, 33 psu), and low salinity (20℃, 10 psu). These results suggest that FK506BP was played roles in biomarker gene on the environmental stress such as water temperature and salinity.

Effects of Environmental Factors on Zoospore Release and Early Growth of the Green Tide Alga Cladophora albida (녹조대발생종 솜대마디말(Cladophora albida)의 유주자 방출과 초기생장에 환경요인이 미치는 영향)

  • We examined the effects of environmental factors on zoospore release and germling growth of the green tide alga Cladophora albida under various conditions of temperature${\times}$irradiance (zoospore release), temperature${\times}$irradiance${\times}$ nutrient (germling growth), and a single factor test of salinity. Zoospore release was maximized at $30^{\circ}C$ and $100{\mu}mol\;photons\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ in the temperature irradiance experiment and at 34 psu in the salinity experiment. Maximum germling growth was observed at $25^{\circ}C$ with $100{\mu}mol\;photons\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ and PES (Provasoli's Enriched Seawater) in the temperature irradiance nutrient experiment, and at 34 psu in the salinity experiment. Germlings grew faster at higher irradiances for a given temperature level, and also grew faster as salinity increased over the range of 5-34 psu. Overall, optimal environmental conditions for zoospore release were $30^{\circ}C$, $100{\mu}mol\;photons\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ and 34 psu. Maximal germling growth occurred at $25^{\circ}C$, $100{\mu}mol\;photons\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$, PES, and 34 psu. C. albida blooms are most likely to occur under these optimal environmental conditions, as plentiful zoospore release and rapid germling growth lead to population growth.

Effects of Temperature and Salinity on Hatching Rate of Fertilized Egg in Fleshy Shrimp, Penaeus chinensis (대하(Penaeus chinensis) 수정난의 부화에 미치는 수온과 염분의 영향)

  • The effects of temperature and salinity on hatching rate of fertilized egg were examined to develop the method for the efficient seed production in fleshy shrimp, Penaeus chinensis. At the temperature ranging from $20^{\circ}C\;to\;24^{\circ}C$, the hatching rate increased with temperature and the highest hatching rate $(95.5\%)$ occurred at $24^{\circ}C$. But, with the temperature above $26^{\circ}C$, the hatching rate decreased suddenly, and at $30^{\circ}C$, the egg did not hatch at all. The hatching rate increased with salinity within the range of $20\%_{\circ}\;to\;31\%_{\circ}$ and the highest hatching rate $(95.5\%)$ occurred at $31\%_{\circ}$. However, with the salinity above $31\%_{\circ}$, the rate decreased abruptly, and it was only $25.5\%\;at\;40\%_{\circ}$. The hatching speed of egg was the fastest at $24^{\circ}C$. The hatching rate at $24^{\circ}C$ with the salinity of $31\%_{\circ}\;was\;30.5\%$ within 18hrs of the hatching experiment and it attained to $95.5\%$ within 48hrs of the hatching experiment. At $24^{\circ}C$, the hatching rate with the salinity of $30\~31\%_{\circ}$ is 1,2 times higher than that of egg with the salinity of $33\~35\%_{\circ}$.

  • Morphological and positional characteristics of anchovy aggregations, confirmed by trawling, were examined in two locations of the southern part of theWest Sea (T1) and the western side of South Sea (T11) of South Korea. Morphological characteristics (mean length, height and area) of the anchovy aggregations at T1 were smaller than those at T11, however the positional characteristics (distributional depth and bottom depth) of the aggregations at T1 were larger than those at T11. Diverse dataset such as the ship's cruise track, the cruse map, and interpolated three-dimensional-like water temperature were visualized in multiple dimensions. For a comprehensive understanding of the anchovy aggregations within their surrounding circumstances, the interpolated water temperature transferred to the location of anchovy aggregations at both stations were visualized based on geospatial information. Using quantitative investigation, the overall range of change in water temperature and salinity of anchovy aggregations at stations was considerably small. However, the water temperature and salinity of anchovy aggregations at T11 were somewhat higher than those at T1.

Effect of expanding low-salinity water in the East China Sea on underwater sound propagation (동중국해 저염분수의 확장이 수중 음파 전달에 미치는 영향)

  • The salinity of sea water is known as a less influencing variable in the calculation of the sound speed of the sea water. This study investigated how the low salinity of sea water affects the vertical structure of the sound speed near the mouth of the Yangtze (Changjiang) River when the diluted fresh water extends toward the East China Sea in the summer. As a result of comparing two types of sound speeds considered measured and fixed salinity, sound speeds appeared distinguishable when the halocline formed steeper than the thermocline due to Yangtze-River Diluted Water (YRDW). In addition, unlikely with fixed salinity conditions, when measured salinity was considered, an underwater sound channel appeared in the middle of the thermocline of which the source depth is located. Accordingly, considering the salinity, this study suggests using Expendable Conductivity Temperature Depth (XCTD) and Expendable Sound Velocimeter (XSV) rather than Expandable Bathy Thermograph (XBT) when calculating sound speed because of the strong halocline due to YRDW in the summer.

Comparison of marine environment and oyster culture between in Gamak and Hiroshima Bays (가막만과 히로시마만의 해양환경과 굴양식의 비교)

  • This research compares oyster farming in Gamak Bay which Hiroshima Bay which has nearly similar marine environments. The marine environment of these two waters has similar variations of air temperature, sea surface temperature, precipitation and salinity. However Hiroshima Bay is higher than Gamak Bay in the sea surface temperature and Hiroshima Bay is also higher than Gamak Bay in the salinity. Their oyster farming method is basically similar but it is different in their facilities. We need to take some measures against high mortalities, and in addition, to enhance the rate of seed collection.
