Many sources of uncertainty exist in geotechnical analysis ranging from the material parameters to the sampling and testing techniques. The conventional deterministic stability analysis of a plane failure in rock slope produce a safety factor but not a probability of failure or reliability index. In the conventional slope stability analysis by evaluating the ground uncertainty as an overall safety factor, it is difficult to evaluate the stability of the realistic rock slope in detail. This paper reviews some established probabilistic analysis techniques, such as the MCS, FOSM, PEM, Taylor Series as applied to plane failure of rock slopes in detail. While the Monte - Carlo methods leads to the most accurate calculation of the probability of safety, this method is too time consuming. Therefore, the simplified probability methods could be alternatives to the MCS. In this study, using these simple probability methods, the failure probability estimation of a plane failure in rock slope is presented.
Two data-based bandwidth selectors which are optimal in the sense that they achieve n$\^$-$\frac{1}{2}$/ rate of convergence in kernel density estimation are proposed. The proposed bandwidth selectors are constructed by modifying Park and Marron's plug-in method. The first modification is taking Taylor expansion of the mean integrated squared error to two more terms than in the case of plug-in method. The second is estimating more accurately the functionals of the unknown density appeared in the minimizer of the expansion by using higher order kernels. The proposed bandwidth selectors were proved to be optimal in terms of convergence rate. According to small-sample Monte Carlo studies, the proposed bandwidth selectors showed better performance than all the other bandwidth selectors considered in the simulation.
The purpose of this paper was to identify and compare the underlying design theory of contemporary European and Japanese fashion designers by using the qualitative research method of grounded theory developed by Glaser and Strauss (1967) and Glaser (1978). In this research, four fashion sites-Paris, Milan, London and Tokyo-were selected. The researcher stayed in each site for a period of two to three weeks for the purpose of data collection. A total of 60 fashion designers, educators, students and journalists were interviewed. 53 open-ended design questionnaires were returned by fashion designers and students. 19 on-site observations of fashion designers and educators were done. Grounded theories of fashion designers were synthesized from in-depth interviews, participant observations and questionnaire surveys of fashion designers, students and educators. The results of theory-building research suggested that there were significant differences between the grounded design theories of European and Japanese fashion designers due to their various cultural contexts.
In this paper, we present an initial value technique for solving singularly perturbed differential difference equations with a boundary layer at one end point. Taylor's series is used to tackle the terms containing shift provided the shift is of small order of singular perturbation parameter and obtained a singularly perturbed boundary value problem. This singularly perturbed boundary value problem is replaced by a pair of initial value problems. Classical fourth order Runge-Kutta method is used to solve these initial value problems. The effect of small shift on the boundary layer solution in both the cases, i.e., the boundary layer on the left side as well as the right side is discussed by considering numerical experiments. Several numerical examples are solved to demonstate the applicability of the method.

Generally, component and FR-4 board are connected by solder joint. Because material properties of components and FR-4 board are different, component and FR-4 board show different coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) and thus strains in component and board are different when they are heated. That is, the differences in CTE of component and FR-4 board cause the dissimilarity in shear strain and BGA solder joint s failure. The first order Taylor series expansion of the limit state function incorporating with thermal fatigue models is used in order to estimate the failure probability of solder joints under heated condition. A model based on plastic-strain rate such as the Coffin-Manson Fatigue Model is utilized in this study. The effects of random variables such as frequency, maximum temperature, and temperature variations on the failure probability of the BGA solder joint are systematically investigated by using a failure probability model with the first order reliability method(FORM).
A method of width adaptation in the radial basis function network (RBFN) using stochastic gradient (SG) algorithm is introduced. Using Taylor's expansion of error signal and differentiating the error with respect to the step-size, the optimal time-varying step-size of the width in RBFN is derived. The proposed approach to adjusting widths in RBFN achieves superior learning speed and the steady-state mean square error (MSE) performance in nonlinear channel environment. The proposed method has shown enhanced steady-state MSE performance by more than 3 dB in both nonlinear channel environments. The results confirm that controlling over step-size of the width in RBFN by the proposed algorithm can be an effective approach to enhancement of convergence speed and the steady-state value of MSE.
In this paper, the authors developed a multidimensional interpolation method inside a finite volume cell in the computation of high-order accurate numerical flux such as the fifth order WEND (weighted essentially non-oscillatory) scheme. This numerical method starts from a simple Taylor series expansion in a proper spatial order of accuracy, and the WEND filter is used for the reconstruction of sharp nonlinear waves like shocks in the compressible flow. Two kinds of interpolations are developed: one is for the cell-averaged values of conservative variables divided in one mother cell (Type 1), and the other is for the vertex values in the individual cells (Type 2). The result of the present study can be directly used to the cell refinement as well as the convective flux between finer and coarser cells in the Cartesian adaptive grid system (Type 1) and to the post-processing as well as the viscous flux in the Navier-Stokes equations on any types of structured and unstructured grids (Type 2).
An arc model based on the N-S equations modified by adding an energy source term to take account of the arc is developed and solved using Taylor-Garlerkin FEM in the present paper. The numerical method is applied to the simulation of the opening procedure of a puffer type GCB. Moving boundary conditions of the arc chamber during operation is taken into account. Numerical predictions of the temperature profiles at different strokes are presented.
Recent, problems on the voltage-instability have been paid attention in power system and methods to find the limit of voltage-stability, concerned with these problems, were developed. However, these methods are short of precision on the limit of voltage-instability. Here, using the second-order load flow, constraint equation(d Pi/d Vi=0) and its patial differentiations are precisely formulated. Also, since the taylor series expansion of power flow equations terminates at the second-order terms, partial differentiations of constraint equation, that is Hessian, are constant. Then, Hessian matrix are calculated once during iteration process.
This paper designs a looper-tension controller for strip top-tail parts in hot strip finishing mills. A three-degree linear model of the looper-tension system is derived by a Taylor's linearization method, where the actuator's dynamics are ignored because of their fast responses. A feedforward shaping controller for the strip top part and a feedforward model reference controller for the strip tail part are respectively designed, they are combined with an ILQ(Inverse Linear Quadratic optimal control) feedback controller for the strip middle part. It is shown from by a computer simulation that the proposed controller is very effective to the strip top-tail parts including the middle part.
