  • This study aims to explore the direction of improvement that considers the talent image of science high schools in the admissions process. To this end, first, the talent image and competencies of science high schools were divided into 'publicity' and 'efficiency,' 'execution' and 'achievement' types, and 'publicity & execution' was predominant in most cases. Next, a total of 28 science high school teachers, education experts, and middle school teachers were surveyed on the degree of reflection of talent image and the direction of improvement in the admissions process of three science high schools. The results of the survey are as follows: first, the evaluation of 'publicity' was very limited in the first stage of admissions process, and selection based on 'achievement' was high. Second, there was a strong tendency to select based on 'efficiency & achievement' in the second stage of interview evaluation. Third, we need to improve the selection of students who fit the 'publicity & execution' type of talent image by introducing 'publicity & execution' type of talent image by introducing 'write a competency-oriented self-introduction letter, reflect other subjects' grades and comparative studies in the school life record, and experts' interviews' to the first-stage of admissions process. Fourth, convergence and open-ended questions that enable divergent thinking should be jointly submitted to reflect the 'publicity & execution' type of talent image in the second stage of interview evaluation. In conclusion, the direction of improvement that considers the talent image of science high schools in the admissions process should be changed to competency-oriented in the first-stage of admissions process and in the second stage of interview evaluation consisting of open-ended questions.

  • In this study, we examined the adaptive practices of science teachers in their classrooms and their perspectives on the distinguishing features of these practices within science subjects. Our analysis comprised 339 cases from 128 middle and high school science teachers nationwide, and 199 cases on the characteristics of adaptive practices in science disciplines. The primary findings were as follows: First, the most significant characteristic of adaptive practice in science disciplines pertained to experimental procedures. Within the 'suggestion of additional materials/activities' category, the most frequently cited adaptive practice, teachers incorporated demonstrations to either facilitate student comprehension or enhance motivation. Additionally, 'experimental equipment manipulation or presentation of inquiry skills' emerged as the second most common adaptive practice related to experiments. Notably, over 50% of teacher responses regarding the characteristics of adaptive practices in science pertained to experiment guidance. Second, many adaptive practices involving difficulties experienced by students in learning situations were presented, particularly in areas such as numeracy and literacy. Many cases were related to the basic ability of mathematics used as a tool in science learning and understanding scientific terms in Chinese characters. Third, beyond 'experiment guidance', the characteristic adaptive practices of science subjects were related to 'connections between scientific theory and the real world', 'misconception guidance in science', 'cultivation of scientific thinking', and 'convergence approaches'. Fourth, the cases of adaptive practice presented by the science teachers differed by school level and major; therefore, it is necessary to consider school level or major in future research related to adaptive practice. Fifth, most of the adaptive action items with a small number of cases were adaptive actions executed from a macroscopic perspective, so it is necessary to pay attention to related professionalism. Finally, based on the results of this study, the implications for science education were discussed.

  • This study was attempted in order to understand leisure phenomenon in Korea cultural area through relation of Leisure Activity, Leisure participation motivation, self -efficacy and Subjective well-being. The purpose of this study was to investigate the question that Leisure Phenomenon was studied focus on specific Leisure activity contents such as physical, tour science, though it is an important subject to explore as psychological and cultural. Also it suggested that what was the problem of established studies and what was the directions for future study. Concrete study problem was assumed three issues. (1)General state of leisure activity and leisure motivation in Korea, (2)The correlated relation between each motivation and self-efficacy and (3)The correlated relation between each motivation and Subjective well-being?. Through this, we conducted three results. Frist, the leisure motivation scale was factor analyzed and consequently 2 factors which can be considered as leisure motivation were prescribed. Also through the responded data, leisure activity of university students showed much more passive activity(e.g.,reading, listening music, movie, watching TV, Internet surfing etc.) than positive and physically activity. Second, each motivation was not significant in self-efficacy. Finally, among the motivation, especially emotion and psychological rest motivation was significant in the subjective wellbeing. These findings imply that general understanding about leisure phenomenon can different as the cultural thinking of leisure activity and leisure motivation.

  • This study examined the characteristics of scientists' writing on the laboratory reports written in the authentic open inquiry, and explored the possibility that the class discussion after the inquiries could influence the laboratory report writing. The samples were 131 10th graders in a science high school in Seoul. The control group (n=45) practiced traditional school science inquiries, the experimental group 1 (n=43) practiced the authentic open inquiries, and the experimental group 2 (n=43) practiced the authentic open inquiries and the class discussion after the laboratory activities. Their laboratory reports were analyzed into three parts - prediction (prediction with background and apposite description), data analysis (data transformation and critical analysis), and conclusion (objective description based on evidence). The frequency of the characteristics of scientist's writing in the experimental group was higher than the control group. Particularly, the differences of the prediction with background (p<.01) and the critical analysis of data (p<.05) were statistically significant. However, the frequency of writing the conclusion based on evidence was very low in all of the three groups. The result from comparing descriptions of reports showed that the writing prediction in experimental groups were more elaborate, and the data transformation in experimental groups were more correct, and the evaluation to data in experimental groups were more critical than the control group. And the descriptions of the critical evaluation to data and the finding flaw in methods were found in experimental groups 2, indicating that the class discussion can stimulate students' scientific thinking.

  • This study dealt with two case studies of the development of beginning science teachers' pedagogical content knowledge (PCK). This study was grounded on the idea that teacher thinking and classroom behavior are related to each other in a reciprocal way. Teachers' PCK influences teaching practices, while in a reverse way teaching activities influence teachers' practical knowledge. Two beginning science teachers participated in this study. Data collection consisted of classroom observation, interviews, reflective journals and lesson plans. For data analysis, we conceptualize pedagogical content knowledge for science teaching as consisting of four components: (a) knowledge about science matter, (b) knowledge about students' understanding of science topics, (c) knowledge about instructional strategies for teaching science, (d) knowledge about assessment in science. The outcomes of this study revealed that there was a large gap between beginning science teachers' intentions for teaching science and their practice. To give beginning teachers more opportunities to incorporate their knowledge base for teaching, we propose that they need to be involved in a real teaching situation at schools rather than in the university.

  • The objective of this study is to suggest improvement plan for invention gifted education based on the awareness of teachers and professionals who related to the invention gifted education for the expansion and development of invention gifted education through improvement of relevant problems. To this end, invention gifted education system and its operational status were analyzed, and questionnaire survey on the awareness of the development plan and satisfaction level was conducted, targeting professionals related to the invention gifted education and teachers in charge of invention gifted education classes or gifted education center. The research results are as follows. First, the level of satisfaction on the invention gifted education was greater than normal (M=3.0) in general, but in the field of 'educational materials', 'teacher training programs' and 'human and material support system of support agencies', the level of satisfaction was relatively low, which requires expansion of the support. Second, it is necessary for Korean Intellectual Property Office and Korea Invention Promotion Association to designate and establish specialized research institution to play a key role in enhancing development and efficiency of invention gifted education. As a result of the questionnaire survey, it turned out that expectation and necessity of the specialized research agency was highly recognized. In particular, demand for 'research and development of gifted education method and materials' and 'research and development of teacher training materials and implementation of teacher training' was high among the key areas of the specialized research institution. Third, teachers and professionals related to the invention gifted education responded that 'invention knowledge' in the areas of invention knowledge and thinking and 'entrepreneurship' in the area of invention attitude was somewhat low toward the question on the level of the 9 characteristics of gifted students with invention talents which current beneficiaries of invention gifted education have, which leads to conclusion that review on the model for the selection of gifted children with invention talents as well as research and development of invention gifted education program to enhance characteristics with low levels is required. If long-term development plans and initiatives are deduced based on this, an effective framework for the invention gifted education will be established in the near future. In addition, it is expected that the differentiated political visions and goals will be established in connection with master plan for the promotion of gifted education.

  • Objectives:The primary purpose of this study is to understand the psychopathology of the victims of school violence in terms of early psychosis. By doing this, the early detection of psychosis among the victims is possible, and early detection may lead to early intervention. Methods:Two-thousand and nine-hundred seventy two students from 16 middle schools in Seoul were asked to fill out questionnaire comprised of popularity and intellectual and school status of Piers-Harris Children's Self Concept Inventory, Symptom Check List-90-Revised, and Ostracism Scale. The subjects whose scores upon Ostracism Scale were higher than average by two standard deviation were labeled as ‘Repelled and Isolated group', and subjects whose scores on popularity were significantly lower than average and whose scores on psychoticism of SCL-90-R were higher than average were defined as 'tentative early psychosis group'. Odds ratios were calculated from the numbers of subjects with and without high psychoticism scores and high ostracism scores. On the subjects of 'tentative early psychotic group', we examined every clinical characteristic and conducted correlation analysis and regression analysis in order to find out the risk factors and to construct theoretical model that explains the psychoticism scores. Results:The results were as follows:1) Total 157(5.3%) subjects were rated significantly higher on ostracism scale, and among them, 47 subjects(29.9%) were rated significantly higher than average on psychoticism scale, while only 50 subjects among 2,135 students who were rated within normal range showed significantly higher score on psychoticism scale. Odds ratio for psychotic group of isolated group were 17.82 and it was statistically significant. 2) Forty-seven subjects(31 boys, 16 girls) who were rated as they were unpopular and rejected from peers had significantly higher psychoticism scores. They were not significantly different from simply high psychoticism subjects in anxiety, social anhedonia scale, magical thinking, obsessivecompulsive symptoms, phobic anxiety, psychoticism, somatization, but showed higher ostracism scores and paranoid tendencies. Among school violence victims, who rated themselves unpopular and showed higher psychoticism scores, the psychoticism scores were mainly explained by anxiety, depression, hostility, interpersonal sensitivity, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, paranoid tendency, somatization scales($r^2=0.93$). Conclusion:Thus, it can be concluded that the subjects with higher ostracism score have the substantially high risk for psychosis development. By these results, we propose that school violence victims with anxiety, depression, hostility, interpersonal sensitivity, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, paranoid tendency, somatization should be tested individually considering school adjustment, attentional deficit, concept formation problems.
