Social capital theory provides a robust framework for analyzing economic well being. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of social capital on the economic satisfaction of retirees in Korea. The data from the first wave of KLoSA(Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging) were used(n=1,628). SPSS 12.0 was used for descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis. The major findings were as follows: First, after controlling for gender, age, region, housing tenure, and personal income, the social capital of the retirees, including cognitive social capital(trust and reciprocity) and structural social capital(emotional and economic familial support, and a well-developed social network), contributes to increases in their economic well-being. Second, the degree of effect social capital has on well-being varied by gender and age; the effect was also different according to gender, regardless of the person's age. These empirical results provide a basis for the institution of policies that help bolster economic wellbeing for retirees by creating conditions that increase social capital in this group.
Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the level of emotional labor, social support, and depressive symptoms of nurses, and the relationships among them. Methods: The data were collected from 314 nurses. Surface and deep-acting scales of the Emotional Labor Scale (ELS), the personal resource questionnaire, the organizational support scale, and the Korean version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Rating Scale for Depression (CES-D) were used. Collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Scheffe test. Results: Fifty six percent of total subjects had mild or major depressive symptoms. As the level of surface-acting of ELS was higher, so was the level of depressive symptoms, while as the level of individual and organizational support was higher, the level of depressive symptoms was lower. Conclusion: It is necessary to provide organizational-level support and to manage surface-acting in order to prevent the nurses' depressive symptoms. In particular, for the nurses who show relatively higher level of depressive symptoms; who are in 20s and have short employed years or not married, it is urgently required to be provided depressive symptoms management programs that targeted for those nurses.
The purpose of this study is to understand married female immigrants' life adjustment process in Korea by explaining the resources to which they have access and how they use them. The data were collected through in-depth interviews with ten female participants who have more than one child, have participated in programs of the multicultural family support center, have work experience, can communicate with Koreans, and live in Daegu. The major findings are as follows. The participants' personal resources differed. English language skills were very useful resources for making money and for earning the respect of family members and others. However, the participants without English language skills had sincerely and actively tried to learn the Korean language and gain bilingual competence. The participants obtained diverse family resources from their husbands and parents-in-law after adapting themselves to perform their gender role. Further, the participants used the social resources offered by public support systems as a starting point for learning the Korean language in their early adaptation process, and formed personal networks with staff members at the multicultural family support center. The results show that the participants used many kinds of resources for acculturation by interacting positively with their environment. Moreover, the resources from diverse levels of their environments affected their acculturation process.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the factors influencing life satisfaction in widowhood among older females. Using the sixth Korean Retirement and Income Study (KReIS) supplementary survey data, a total sample of 1,471 women aged 65 or older whose spouse had died were selected, divided into 508 young-old (65-74), 745 middle-old (75-84), and 218 oldest-old (85+). Then, factors influencing the life satisfaction of these three groups were analyzed, based on a combination of perceived health and interpersonal satisfaction levels. It was found that among the young-old group, a higher level of subjective health perception indicated by monthly income and material support and interpersonal satisfaction linked to more frequent participation in community gathering combined for an overall higher level of life satisfaction. For the middle-old group, higher life satisfaction was provided by monthly income, informational support, and material support for subjective health perception and no diseases for interpersonal satisfaction. The oldest-old group with higher life satisfaction referred to monthly income for subjective health perception and no experience in donation activities for interpersonal satisfaction. Based on these findings, this study provides implications for policy and practice to improve the life satisfaction of elderly women who have experienced their spouse's death.
The purpose of this study was to identify the factors determining the participation of the poor elderly in economic activity. This study analyzed secondary data of the second wave of Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Binary logistic regression was used to identify the factors that are associated with the economic activity of the poor elderly. The results of the analyses showed that age, gender, region, public assistance, education, health status, chronic illness, contacts with acquaintances, and support from children were associated with participation in economic activity. The study's findings have several implications for policies and services. The study identified the need for an age- and gender-specific approach to promoting participation in economic activity among the poor elderly. Regional differences should also be considered in the creation of work opportunities for older adults. In terms of human capital, the positive effect of good health indicates that strategies are needed to address the needs of older adults with health issues. In addition, there is a need for more jobs for elderly job seekers with high levels of education. Finally, policy makers and practitioners should explore interventions for enhancing the social network involvement and community support for the elderly living in poverty.
This research analyzes factors of family life adjustment in mixed-culture families through a focus group and individual interviews with nine mixed-culture couples eighteen people who live in city C. First, the reason that women of other cultures wants to marry Korean men is because they find it a good opportunity, as they expect that Korean husbands will take responsibility of their family. On the other hand, Korean men also expect that they would have some similarities to each other. Also, in southeastern Asian men have more freedom than women to choose an international marriage in Southeastern Asia. Second, mixed-culture couples in everyday life are affected by communication problems, cultural differences, natural environment, financial situation, male -dominant attitude, self-adjustment pressure, house-work role and financial support from their own country. Third, wives from other cultures ask for social support to adjust in Korea and make a healthy family. These women can be important, as they have their own role in the family even though they may be far from their mother in law's strong expectation in how well she can adopt Korean culture.
This descriptive study about a community center for elderly users identifies factors influencing economic dependency. The objective of this study is to find factors that contribute to increased economic dependency and to provide basic data for preventing conflict between caregivers and elderly dependents. The subjects are 204 elderly persons who are community-center users in SongPa-Gu. Thirteen dongs (administrative areas) were chosen randomly in a cluster sample from among 26 dongs in Soungpagu containing a total of 158 community centers for the elderly. I obtained informed consents for my research from all subjects, and collected data by conducting interviews from June 28th, 2011 to August 7th, 2011. The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Duncan test and multi regression analysis. The mean economic dependency score was 3.23, meaning that subjects with this score are dependent at a level that is "over intermediate". The level of formal education, homeownership, financial assistance from family and the number of families, financial assistance to the family and the number of families, economic life satisfaction, self efficacy and social support.
This study examined the effects of paternal participation in child care and social support on planning for a second childbirth, focusing on the mediating effect of the mother's parenting stress. The 887 subjects studied in this paper were mothers who have a first child, and were selected from a sample of the 2nd Panel Study of Korean Children(PSKC) by the Korea Institute of Child Care and Education(KICCE), conducted in 2009. Data was analyzed using a Structural Equation Model(SEM) to identify a structure and relationships among factors. The significance of indirect effects to test the mediating effect of maternal parenting stress was identified via bootstrapping. Results indicated that maternal parenting stress partially mediated the relationship between the father's participation in child care and planning for a second childbirth, and absolutely mediated the relationship between social support and planning for a second childbirth. The findings reveal the importance of reducing parenting stress, given its substantial impact on planning for a second childbirth.
Purpose: The objective of this study is to identify factors associated with perceived health status of married immigrant women. Methods: Data were collected from 65 married immigrant women. The measurements were Symptom checklist-48, Acculturative Stress Scale, Parenting Stress Index(PSI), and Personal Resource Questionnaire(PQR). Descriptive, T-test, ANOVA test, Pearson correlation and multiple regression analyses were used. Results: There were significant differences in perceived health status according to satisfaction with the married life(F=8.819, p=0.000), and help from husband(F=6.308, p=.003). There was also a significant relationship between perceived health status and perceived economic status (F=8.006, p=.001), acculturative stress (r=.560, p<.01), parenting stress (r=.662, p<.01) and social support (r=-.289, p<.05). The result of multiple regression analysis showed a significant association of parenting stress with perceived health status of married immigrant women (${\beta}=0.397$, p=0.037). Conclusion: Comprehensive interventions designed to enhance the health of married immigrant women, including prevention of acculturative stress, parenting stress and improving social support may be helpful in mitigating health in married immigrant women.
