  • Backgrounds/Aims: Timing of resection for synchronous colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM) has been debated for decades. The aim of the present study was to assess the feasibility of simultaneous resection of CRLM in terms of major complications and develop a prediction model for safe resections. Methods: A retrospective single-center study of synchronous, resectable CRLM, operated between 2013 and 2021 was conducted. Upper limit of 95% confidence interval (CI) of major complications (≥ grade IIIA) was set at 40% as the safety threshold. Logistic regression was used to determine predictors of morbidity. Prediction model was internally validated by bootstrap estimates, Harrell's C-index, and correlation of predicted and observed estimates. Results: Ninety-two patients were operated. Of them, 41.3% had rectal cancers. Major hepatectomy (≥ 4 segments) was performed for 25 patients (27.2%). Major complications occurred in 20 patients (21.7%, 95% CI: 13.8%-31.5%). Predictors of complications were the presence of comorbidities and major hepatectomy (area under the ROC curve: 0.692). Unacceptable level of morbidity (≥ 40%) was encountered in patients with comorbidities who underwent major hepatectomy. Conclusions: Simultaneous bowel and CRLM resection appear to be safe. However, caution should be exercised when combining major liver resections with bowel resection in patients with comorbid conditions.

  • Structural changes in an economy system bring about serious problems in establishing economic policies. The boom of middle-east export, the oil shock, and the recent dollar crisis in Korean economy are such examples. Hence, it is necessary to identify and estimate those structural changes. This study focuses on an output and price and analyzes structural changes in aggregate demand and supply. The aggregate demand and supply structures are described by conventional dynamic simultaneous equations model, where each structural change is represented by dummy variables and estimated by the proposed Bayesian method. By applying this model to Korean output and price, structural changes in the aggregate demand and supply are analyzed.

  • Modeling and simulation for simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) process in bioconversion of paper mill sludge to lactic acid was carried out. The SSF process combined the enzymatic hydrolysis of paper mill sludge into glucose and the fermentation of glucose into lactic acid in one reactor. A mathematical modeling for cellulose hydrolysis was developed, based on the proposed mechanism of cellulase adsorption deactivation. Another model for simple lactic acid fermentation was also made. A whole mathematical model for SSF was developed by combining the above two models for cellulose hydrolysis and lactic acid fermentation. The characteristics of the SSF process were investigated using the mathematical model.

  • A previous study verified that the SIRT (simultaneous iterative reconstruction technique) method is more efficient than the back-projection method as a CT algorithm for wood. However, it was expected that the determination of the initial model function of the SIRT method would influence the quality of CT image. Therefore, in this study, we intended to develop a technique that could be used to determine an adequate initial model function. For this purpose, we proposed several techniques, and for each technique we examined the effects of the initial model function on the average errors and the CT image at each iteration. Through this study, it was shown that the average error was decreased and the image quality was improved using the proposed techniques. This tendency was most pronounced when the back-projection method was used to determine the initial model function. From the results of this study, we drew the following conclusions: 1) The initial model function of the SIRT method should be determined with careful attention, and 2) the back-projection method efficiently determines the initial model function of the SIRT method.

  • In this study, a position and force simultaneous trajectory tracking control algorithm is proposed for a driving apparatus that consists of two pneumatic cylinders connected in series. The controller applied to the driving apparatus is composed of a non-interaction controller to compensate for interaction between cylinders and a disturbance observer aimed to reduce the effect of model discrepancy that cannot be compensated by the non-interaction controller. The effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm is proved by experimental results.

  • For two-dimensional causal spatial autoregressive processes, we propose and illustrate a method for determining asymptotic simultaneous confidence regions using Yule-Walker, unbiased Yule-Walker and least squres estimators. The spectral density for first-order spatial autoregressive model are looked at in more detail. Finite sample properties based on simulation study we also presented.

  • The dynamical model forecasts using state-of-art general circulation models (GCMs) have some limitations to simulate the real climate system since they do not depend on the past history. One of the alternative methods to correct model errors is to use the canonical correlation analysis (CCA) correction method. CCA forecasts at the present time show better skill than dynamical model forecasts especially over the midlatitudes. Model outputs are adjusted based on the CCA modes between the model forecasts and the observations. This study builds a canonical correlation prediction model for subseasonal (June) precipitation. The predictors are circulation fields over western North Pacific from the Global Seasonal Forecasting System version 5 (GloSea5) and observed snow cover extent over Eurasia continent from Climate Data Record (CDR). The former is based on simultaneous teleconnection between the western North Pacific and the East Asia, and the latter on lagged teleconnection between the Eurasia continent and the East Asia. In addition, we suggest a technique for improving forecast skill by applying the ensemble canonical correlation (ECC) to individual canonical correlation predictions.

  • As one of the most important issues in computer vision and image processing, online object tracking plays a key role in numerous areas of research and in many real applications. In this study, we present a novel tracking method based on the proposed structured sparse representation model, in which the tracked object is assumed to be sparsely represented by a set of object and background templates. The contributions of this work are threefold. First, the structure information of all the candidate samples is utilized by a joint sparse representation model, where the representation coefficients of these candidates are promoted to share the same sparse patterns. This representation model can be effectively solved by the simultaneous orthogonal matching pursuit method. In addition, we develop a tracking algorithm based on the proposed representation model, a discriminative candidate selection scheme, and a simple model updating method. Finally, we conduct numerous experiments on several challenging video clips to evaluate the proposed tracker in comparison with various state-of-the-art tracking algorithms. Both qualitative and quantitative evaluations on a number of challenging video clips show that our tracker achieves better performance than the other state-of-the-art methods.

  • The purpose of statistical analyses of array-CGH experiment data is to divide the whole genome into regions of equal copy number, to quantify the copy number in each region and finally to evaluate its significance of being different from two. Several statistical procedures have been proposed which include the circular binary segmentation, and a Gaussian based local regression for detecting break points (GLAD) by estimating a piecewise constant function. We propose in this note a penalized spline regression and its simultaneous confidence band(SCB) approach to evaluate the statistical significance of regions of genetic gain/loss. The region of which the simultaneous confidence band stays above 0 or below 0 can be considered as a region of genetic gain or loss. We compare the performance of the SCB procedure with GLAD and hidden Markov model approaches through a simulation study in which the data were generated from AR(1) and AR(2) models to reflect spatial dependence of the array-CGH data in addition to the independence model. We found that the SCB method is more sensitive in detecting the low level copy number alterations.
