  • This research extracted emotional words for measuring user's emotions expressed while using a cellular phone and a web. And then the emotional words were compared to find out whether the difference in emotional words by the type of products. The results of this study suggest that the hardware-oriented products used for specific purpose such as cellular phone extracted a lot of emotional words related to 'Satisfaction in Usability' and 'Pleasure'. 'Satisfaction in Usability' are conceived satisfying in usability or practicality of product. 'Pleasure' are pleasant emotions expressed while using a product. However the emotional words related to 'Aesthetics' and 'Novelty' were omitted. 'Aesthetics' are expressed by product's appearance and by various visual information while using a product. 'Novelty' are expressed by something that is novel and new that has never been experienced. On the other hand the software-oriented products used rather to find something better and new information than to perform specific tasks such as web extracted a lot of emotional words related to 'Novelty'. Therefore, the results of this research have found evidence that it is desirable to make a set of subjective evaluation scale by the type of products. When making the subjective evaluation scale, it is important to use appropriate emotional words for the purpose of use and the characteristics of those products.

  • Laboratory equipment will continue to be developed and created as long as experiments continue. Up until now, the designs have been focused on the functional role; successfully process the study purpose. However, nowadays, the requirements of providing emotional satisfaction of the design, has increased. Even so, the users are normally limited by specific groups and investments on these designs have been neglected due to small annual production by the small market. Through this study, we have conducted an emotional evaluation on Temperature and Humidity Chamber's (TH Chamber) exterior shape. First of all, we extracted emotional words and placed them in categories that represent these emotions and conducted an emotional evaluation on four typical TH chamber models. They were selected based on its door lock type and control box type. The result showed that the 'fixed type' of control box and the 'handle type' of door lock were most favorable by the users, satisfying the five representative emotions; 'Attractiveness', 'Classiness', 'Comfortableness', 'Pleasant' and 'Satisfaction in Usability'. Particularly, all 4 emotional words in the 'Satisfaction in Usability' category recorded over 3.65. This indicates that Satisfaction in Usability is relatively an important category when expressing laboratory equipment. The result of this research is expected to be used as a basic data to find a way of right approach in laboratory equipment design.

  • This study aims to suggest basic materials to develop an emotional font for future Hangeul font development plan by investigating emotional reaction displayed through the subjects and by quantifying its contribution of the stimulation elements causing such reaction. For this, a survey of 150 university students who are currently enrolled in the College of Design was conducted in order to analyze correlation between 30 emotional words extracted from the Hangeul font and the selected 36 sample fonts. The combined data was described with the two dimensional dispersion using the quantification theory type III. The analysis found out that the Hangeul font forms the x-axis showing "soft(dynamic).hard(static)" and the y-axis showing "modern(light).classic(heavy)”. Specifically, there exist emotional groups such as "archaic","masculine","feminine","negative", and "modern static"on each axis. In addition, to extract the casual relationship between the value of emotional reaction and its stimulation elements quantitatively, the author indicated the emotional words of each axis and the total value of equivalent five emotional word groups as the standard variance and the constituent of Hangeul font as the independent variable, and then the quantification theory type I was used to analyze the physical elements of the Hangeul font. As a result, "the centerline of gravity(base line)" and "thickness variance of a stroke" on the two axes, and "the centerline of gravity(base line)" and "decoration" among the five groups were identified as the most influential elements that affect the emotional reaction of the subjects.

  • This research aims to identify innovative companies' attention to the emotion and sensibility and its application by analyzing the contents of the corporate annual reports. Annual report is a good reference data because it describes not only various current products and services' annual activities and business performance but also corporate future direction. Sensibility is interpreted and used with various words internationally: various related terms such as sensibility, sense, emotion, feeling and affection are analyzed not only by the definition but also the interrelationship among them, and included for the contents analysis. To select the innovative companies, the researcher used 'Fast company' that is the economic journal and deducted the companies list via 'The world's 50 most innovative companies' in 2009 and 2014. Listed companies' 2009 and 2014 annual reports' contents were analyzed to identify the rate of the recognition and the application of sensibility to their business. Even though the quantitative result of the content analysis indicates not a strong relationship between corporate innovativeness and 'sensibility' qualitative result identifies companies are paying more attention to the 'sense' and 'feeling' during five years. In conclusion, the innovation that company pursues strategically is shifting from differentiation and the technological leadership to satisfying user experiences and the number of companies which express and measure user feeling and emotions are increasing.

  • The affective words on photographic images were analyzed and a model was structured. Based on this model, the effects of color on the affections were studied. In study 1, the photographic images with various materials and techniques were presented and the affective responses are collected. The factor analysis using principal axing method showed that the variance of the affective words could be explained about 42% by the three factors. These are named positive-negative, dynamic-static, light-heavy, respectively. In study 2, the effects of color on the affections were evaluated on three basic dimensions. Ninety representative color images were converged black-and-white images, and each of 180 images was rated on the three affective scales. The t-test showed that the effects of color are statistically significant on the three affective scales, respectively. The achromatic images were felt more negative, more static, and heavier than chromatic images.

  • This study is aimed at minimizing the errors in using a sensitivity evaluation model that could occur when sensitivity analysis method is actively used for design evaluation. To extract words of a contrantion-type model by product, interior space, and streetscape design, primary word refinement was conducted with the words extracted from preceding studies. The analysis revealed that 19 words were used in all three fields. A reliability analysis revealed that different words had a bad impact on the reliability in each field. The applicability was reviewed through reliability analysis of EPA model as contraction-type and PAD model as inference-type. The results are as follows. Although the reliability of the contrantion-type model was higher than that of inference-type model in all three fields, the differences in Cronbach's Alpha were small. Also, When the reliability was analyzed after deleting the words that had a bad impact on reliability, the differences in the reliability's coefficients were clearly significant. Therefore, it is necessary to select words suitable for sensitivity evaluation target and objectivity of the evaluation can be boosted by using a proper model. Analysis of the sensitivity evaluation model suitable for future environmental evaluation should be analyzed with various statistical methods, beyond verification of reliability.

  • Current research explores the effect of language on the perception of facial emotion as suggested by the psychological construction theory of emotion by using a psychophysical method. In this study, we hypothesize that the perception of facial expression may be influenced if the observer is shown an affective word before he/she judges an expression. Moreover, we suggest that his/her understanding of a facial emotion will be in line with the conceptual context that the word denotes. During the two experiments conducted for this project, a control stimulus or words representing either angry or happy emotions were briefly presented to participants before they were shown a target face. These target faces were randomly selected from seven faces that were gradually morphed to show neutral to angry (in Experiment 1) and neutral to happy (in Experiment 2) expressions. The participants were asked to perform a two-alternative forced choice (2AFC) task to judge the emotion of the target face (i.e., decide whether it is angry or neutral, or happy or neutral). The results of Experiment 1 (when compared with the control condition) showed that words denoting anger decreased the point of subjective equality (PSE) for judging the emotion of the target as anger, whereas words denoting happiness increased the PSE. Experiment 2, in which participants had to judge expressions on a scale from happy to neutral, produced a contrasting pattern of results. The outcomes of this study support the claim of the psychological construction theory of emotion that the perception of facial emotion is an active construction process that may be influenced by information (such as affective words) that provide conceptual context.
