Effect of the Extract of Schizandra chinensis Baill on Bacteria Isolated from Oral Cavity (구강에서 분리된 세균에 대한 오미자(Schizandra chinensis Baill) 추출물의 영향)

  • Growth inhibition of the extract of Schizandra chinensis Baill on bacteria isolated from oral cavity of dental patient was investigated. The extract yield of water was 53.8%, and the yield was higher than these of methanol. High temperature was profitable to extract yield. As a result of investigation about antibacterial effect of water extract of S. chinensis, tested strains were mostly inhibited by water extract of S. chinensis. As a result of investigation about minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) of water extract of S. chinensis on the oral bacteria, MIC of water extract of S. chinensis was between 125 and ${1000{\mu}g/ml}$.

Screening for Antimicrobial Activity from Korean Plants (국내산 식물의 항균활성 검색)

  • 141 methanol extracts from 125 plant species which populate in Korea were screened for antimicrobial activity against various food-borne pathogens and food spoilage microorganisms. Those plants were selected from 3 different plant groups: traditional herbs, edible plants and flowers. The methanol extracts were tested by using the disk diffusion assay against five bacteria: Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli. From the evaluation of the inhibition zone diameter of microbial growth, the most significant antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus auresus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli was observed from the extract of Schizandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill., Rheum officinale Baill., Schizandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill., Koelreuteria paniculata Lax and Crataegus pinnatifida Bunge, respectively. The extract from many plants - Koelreuteria paniculata Lax, Chaenomeles sinensis Koehne, Scutellaria bacicalensis Georgi, Castanea crenata Sieb. et Zucc., Rosa centifolia L., Allium fistulosum L. var. giganteum Makino, Crataegus pinnatifida Bunge, Schizandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill., Lonicera japonica - showed antimicrobial activity all four tested bacteria.

Effects of Schizandra chinensis BAILL on Lipid Lowering and Antioxidant in Hyperlipidemic Rat

  • The present study examined the effects of Schizandra chinensis extract on the serum lipid composition and the antioxidant of rats in which obesity was induced through high fat diet. Fifty male Sprague-Dawely rats weighing 163.91$\pm$4.17g on the average were adjusted to basic diet and laboratory environment and were fed with high fat diet freely for 6 weeks to induce obesity. Forty rats, the final weight of which was 400g, were selected and were divided into a control group(C), treated groups(T I ; body weight of 100mg/kg, TII ; 150mg/kg and TIII ; 200mg/kg), 10 heads of similar weight for each, and test breeding was performed for 4 weeks. During the test breeding, all treated groups were fed with basic diet and difference in intake among the treated groups were maintained to be less than 5%. According to the result, the quantity of Triglyceride in serum was lower in all of the groups treated with Schizandra chinensis than the control group, but the difference was not significant except the treated group of 200mg (P>0.05). The quantity of Total cholesterol in serum was significantly lower in all the groups treated with Schizandra chinensis than in the control group (P<0.05) but differences according to the quantity of Schizandra chinensis applied were not observed. The quantity of HDL-cholesterol was not significantly different among all the groups including the control group (P<0.05) and no regular tendency of change in the quantity was observed according to the quantity of Schizandra chinensis applied. The quantity of LDL-cholesterol was lower in all the groups treated with Schizandra chinensis, but the treated group of 100mg was not significantly different from the control group. The quantity of TBARS in serum was lower in all the groups treated with Schizandra chinensis than in the control group (P<0.05), but no regular tendency of change in the quantity was observed according to the quantity of Schizandra chinensis applied. The quantity of liver TBARS was not significantly different among all the treated groups (P>0.05). The levels of glutathione peroxidase activity (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase activity (SOD) and catalase activity were higher in all the groups treated with Schizandra chinensis treated group than in the control group (P<0.05), and the treated group of 200mg showed the highest activity among the treated groups.

Quality Monitoring of Distributed Schizandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill in Korea

  • Object : This study investigated the quality inspection of Schizandra chinensis (Turcz.) Bail distributed in Korea. Methods: To evaluate the quality of these herbal medicines, we carried out TLC pattern analysis, purity, loss on drying, ash, acid-insoluble ash, essential oil contents, dilute ethanol-soluble, water-soluble, ether-soluble extracts and HPLC analysis. Results : As a result, TCL pattern analysis of schizandrin and gomisin A showed Rf=0.64 and 0.74, respectively. To measured content of schizandrin and gomisin A, we quantitatively analyzed using HPLC. The average contents of schizandrin and gomisin A were detected to be 0.60 (${\pm}$0.02)% and 0.12 (${\pm}$0.004)%, respectively. Discussion : As a result of this study, we suggest that the minimum content of schizandrin and gomisin A should be 0.5% and 0.1%, respectively. We could suggest that the minimum of essential oil content should be 0.6 ml.

Comparison of the Properties and Extracting Conditions of Juice Preperation from Schizandra nigra (흑오미자 즙액의 추출조건과 추출물의 특성)

  • To determine the properties for juice preperation of Black Omija (Schizandra nigra MAXIM.) and Omija (Schizandra chinensis BAILL.), yield of extraction, chromaticity and lightness, pH and soluble solid of the extract were investigated. When Schizandra nigra was extracted for 3 hr at $80^{\circ}C$ using 20% aqueous ethanol, the yield of extracts was highest. For the desirable chromaticity coordinates, the optimum extraction time and temperature of Schizandra nigra were 3 hr at $80^{\circ}C$. The lightness of the extract was low of the value when extraction time and temperature was long and high. The sugar content of the extract of Schizandra nigra was ranged between 2.0 and 2.6% Brix, which is lower than that of Schizandra chinensis. Although the pH of the extract from Schizandra nigra was a low in comparison with that of water extract the pH range was proper to maintain the stability of color of extract from the Schizandra chinensis.

  • In the course of searching for PAF receptor antagonists, pregomisin (1) and chamigrenal (2) were isolated from the fruits of Schizandra chinensis Baill by the bioactivity-guided isolation. Both compounds showed PAF antagonistic activity and the $IC_{50}$ values were $4.8{\times}10^{-5} M and 1.2{\times}10^{-4}M,$ respectively. In addition, the $^{13}C$ NMR assignments of 1 and 2 using DEPT, HMQC, COLOC and HMBC were reported for the first time.

Antimicrobial Activity of Medicinal Herbs against Salmonella gallinarum and Staphylococcus epidermidis (Salmonella gallinarum와 Staphylococcus epidermidis 균주에 대한 한약재의 항균 활성)

  • The present study was conducted to investigate the antimicrobial activities of extracts from approximately 40 different traditional Korean medicinal herbs against S. gallinarum and S. epidermidis. The extracts from Schizandra chinensis Baill., Melia azedarach Linn$\acute{e}$, Caesalpinia sappan Linn$\acute{e}$. and Rhus javanica Linn$\acute{e}$. exhibited high antimicrobial activities against S. gallinarum, whereas the extracts from Melia azedarach Linn$\acute{e}$ and Rhus javanica Linn$\acute{e}$. exhibited high antimicrobial growth for S. epidermidis. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of Melia azedarach Linn$\acute{e}$, Caesalpinia sappan Linn$\acute{e}$. and Rhus javanica Linn$\acute{e}$. for S. gallinarum were 1.2 mg/mL, whereas MIC of exracts from Rhus javanica Linn$\acute{e}$. extract for S. epidermidis were 0.6 mg/mL. Heat treatment of the extracts from Schizandra chinensis Baill. and Rhus javanica Linn$\acute{e}$. caused a significant reduction in antimicrobial activities against S. gallinarum. but didn't affect antimicrobial activities against S. edidermidis. Alkaline treatment of the extracts from Schizandra chinensis Baill. caused a significant reduction in antimicrobial activities against S. gallinarum, while similar treatment of the extracts from Rhus javanica Linn$\acute{e}$. caused a significant increase in antimicrobial activities against S. edidermidis. Since extracts from Rhus javanica Linn$\acute{e}$. and Caesalpinia sappan Linn$\acute{e}$. exhibited the highest antimicrobial activities, these extracts at the concentrations of 100, 300 or 500 ppm were added and then bacterial growth-inhibiting activities for S. gallinarum and S. epidermidis by these two extracts were further examined. Optical density at 620 nm ($OD_{620}$) after 24 hours incubation in the absence of Rhus javanica Linn$\acute{e}$. extract ranged from 0.30 to 0.45 compared with $OD_{620}$ value ranging from 0.06 to 0.18 in the presence of 100, 300 or 500 ppm of the extract, indicating that growth of all bacteria was significantly inhibited within 24 hours by the addition of at least 100 ppm of Rhus javanica Linn$\acute{e}$ extract. Value of $OD_{620}$ after 24 hours incubation in the absence of Caesalpinia sappan Linn$\acute{e}$. extract ranged from 0.30 to 0.55 compared with $OD_{620}$ value ranging from 0.05 to 0.15 in the presence of 300 or 500 ppm of the extract, indicating that growth of all bacteria was also significantly inhibited within 24 hours by the addition of at least 300 ppm of Caesalpinia sappan Linn$\acute{e}$. extract. In conclusion, these findings suggest that extracts from Rhus javanica Linn$\acute{e}$. and Caesalpinia sappan Linn$\acute{e}$. may play important roles in antimicrobial activities against S. gallinarum and S. epidermidis.
