  • We have developed a peer agent to support programming learning and analyzed its educational effects in a programming course. The agent acts as a tutor or a tutee. The role of a tutor/tutee is like the role of a navigator/driver in pair programming. While students are learning with the peer agent, the students' programming abilities are modeled. Based on the student's model, the peer agent provides appropriate feedbacks and contents to the learner. The peer agent gives positive effects on learners' achievement and self-efficacy in a programming course. It means that the peer agent system helps the learner in an affective domain as well as a cognitive domain.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of private tutor's job stress on the organizational commitment and turn-over intention and to verify the mediating effect of the organizational commitment. The questionnaire survey was peformed for 332 private tutors in special education region in Seoul. The collected data were used as a model of path coefficients obtained through analysis of structure equation model(SEM) and hypothesis verification. The result of the verification is as follows. First, both stress by student and stress by administrative support showed statistically significant negative effects on the organizational commitment. Second, the private tutor's organizational commitment showed a statistically significant negative effects on the turn-over intention. Third, both stress by task and stress by conflict in organization showed statistically significant positive effects on the turn-over intention. Fourth, even if both stress by student and stress by administrative support showed statistically no significant effects on the turn-over intention, they showed statistically significant effects on the turn-over intention with the mediating effect of the organizational commitment. It was confirmed that the turn-over intention can be decreased by relief of the private tutor's job stress and enhancement of the organizational commitment. In this process, it is meaningful to verify the role and function of the private tutor's organizational commitment.

  • Free-talking in Korea has recently been emphasized as a way of improving students' speaking ability outside of the classroom. The purpose of this study is to examine perceptions of free-talking, to understand what type of roles were played by or allotted between Korean students and international professors (IPs) and to look for effective speaking strategies for utilizing free-talking. Participants of this study were 68 university students and 23 IPs. The data collected through a survey type of questionnaire were analyzed by this researcher and the main findings indicate that students and IPs have somewhat different viewpoints about their concepts of free-talking. Students expressed varying viewpoints depending on their experience and class (year). In terms of the benefits, usefulness, and satisfaction of free-talking, students and IPs seem to be in more agreement with each other although the two groups have conflicting perceptions in the particular operation of free-talking, especially in terms of preparation and feedback. Students stated that they feel anxious, nervous, and that they struggle with peer pressure while free-talking. However, they feel that through free-talking they build up confidence and increase their speaking ability. Regarding roles, most professors play a helpful role as a guide or facilitator while students want professors to provide more suitable materials and to tutor them by means of appropriate feedback and strategies as well-prepared teachers like a prompter, participant or tutor in the timely manner. Finally, this paper proffers a few practical suggestions for activating free-talking and a discussion of the pedagogical implications.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of peer tutoring on students' achievement and learning satisfaction in a liberal computer class at university level. Traditional teaching method was applied for the control group consisting 55 students for 8 weeks. The experimental group containing 44 students was instructed using both traditional teaching method and peer tutoring. According to the results of diagnosed test, the experimental group was divided into heterogeneous ability group of 3 or 4. The tutor training was provided a week in advance of the class and the students played a role of a tutor and tutee by taking turns. The results showed no significant differences between the two groups on academic achievement; however, in terms of students' learning satisfaction, it displayed a wider range of results. The learning satisfaction data from the experimental group showed a much higher level than that of the control group. It is predicted that the amount of class hours of a week, the quality of the lecture and the application of peer tutoring affect the students' academic achievement. It is suggested that subsequent research on peer tutoring will allow for more in-depth study in this field.
