  • This study was tried to calculate the stumpage value using GIS technique. Before calculating this price the feasible areas to cut were divided from all forests. The stumpage value per $m^3$ was calculated by the method of calculating back from the market price, according to the working volume of logging unit and clearing a felling area using GIS. The distribution of the stumpage value for the coniferous stands was estimated from minimum 10,000 won to maximum 50,000 won, and for the deciduous stands the stumpage value was distributed from minimum 20,000 won to maximum 40,000 won. The total estimated selling price for the cutting available area (197.3ha) among this study area(250ha) except the cutting limited area was about 1.13 billions won. And the estimated selling price for the korean white pine stands was about 650 millions won, occupied 57% among the total selling price, and for the deciduous stands showed 383 millions won, occupied 34% of the total price, and for the japanese larch was 9.69 millions won, occupied 9% of the total price. But the rigida pine stands showed only 1.22 millions won.

  • Diversity, production and nutrients concentrations of mushroom in a pitch pine forest (Pinus rigida) were studied from March through November 2000 in Kongju, Chungnam Province. Fifteen $2{\times}2m$ permanent quadrats were established randomly in the study area. 32 species of mushrooms were identified in the permanent quadrats during the study period. Although mushrooms occurred from June to October, the heighest diversity and biomass production occurred in August and September. Seasonal dominant species were Collybia confluens in July, Cantharellus lutescens in August and September, respectively. Annual production of mushrooms were 12.13kg $Dwha^{-1}yr^{-1}$. Seasonal production was 0.71kg $Dwha^{-1}$ for July, 3.95kg $Dwha^{-1}$ for August and 6.92 kg $Dwha^{-1}$ for September, respectively. Average concentrations of N, P, K, Ca and Mg in mushrooms was $38.81{\pm}4.82, \;0.90{\pm}0.44,\;28.47{\pm}7.81,\;0.24{\pm}0.16\;and\;0.76{\pm}0.26mg\;g^{-1}$, respectively, which were much higher than those in leaf litter and soil of the study site. Amount of N, P, K, Ca and Mg accumulated in mushrooms in 2000 was 463.41, 10.26, 345.21, 3.14 and $8.99g\;ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$, respectively.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of pressing time and spreading amount, moisture content, gap-distance with butt to butt joint and adhesives on bonding strength in manufacturing the laminated wood with Pitch pine (Pinus rigida). The results obtained were as follows: 1) The pressing time of 12 hours, 10 kilogram per square centimeter of pressure and 200 gram per square meter of spreading amount were required to reach over 50 kilogram per square centimeter (block shear strength) in manufacturing the laminated wood by aqueous vinyl urethane adhesive. 2) The bonding strength decreased with the increase of moisture content of wood. The block shear strength, however, showed over 100 kilogram per square centimeter when the strength test was carried out after air-drying the laminated wood in high moisture content (30-70%). 3) Regardless of direction of load, every flexural property decreased with the increase of gap-distance with butt to butt joint. However, little of every flexural property was changed at 0.5 millimeter of joint-gap distance. The flexural property of vertically laminated wood (perpendicular to glue line to load direction: 1) showed more than that of horizontally laminated wood (parallel to glue line to load direction: //). 4) Among five adhesives used at this experiment, the bonding strength of aqueous vinyl urethane adhesive was the highest in dry bond and wet tests.

  • This experiment was accomplished to study the effect affecting to the absorption of creosote solutions by treating temperatures 20, 50 and $80^{\circ}C$ when the small test pieces were treated as short timed immersion process. The test speciemens used in this experiment were cut into 180 pieces of $2.5{\times}2.5{\times}5cm$ size from the air dried sapwood of Righda Pine (Pinus rigida M.). They were controlled to about 8 to 9% moisture contents and measured specific gravities. Four creosote solutions of $S_1$(straight creosote), $S_2$(creosote 70% : heavy oil 30%), $S_3$(creosote 50% : heavy oil 50%) and $S_4$(creosote 30% : heavy oil 70%), and three treating temperatures of $T_1$($20^{\circ}C$), $T_2$($50^{\circ}C$) and $T_3$($80^{\circ}C$) were applied by factorial split plot design in the each treatment of 3, 7, 15, 30 and 60 minutes immersion. According to the results this study may be concluded briefly as follows : 1. In this immersion process the absorption effects of creosote mixtures by the increase of temperatures are recognized considerably in the each treating times. However in the straight creosote of treated solutions the effective differences were not shown but most effective differences were shown in the $S_2$ solution. 2. Although the solutional absorptions were raised considerably by temperature increase in every treating times the absorption effects of creosote mixtures were not reached to that of straight creosote because the effects are considerably lowered if the treating solutions were mixed with heavy oil even a small quantities. 3. The relations between the creosote contents of treating solutions and the absorptions in wood are shown as Fig. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. In these figures the absorption curves made by higher temperature treatment $T_3$ are on the lower treatments $T_1$ and $T_2$ if the solutions were mixed with heavy oil. 4. This report is a part of the consolidated results announced at the annual meetings of Korean Forestry Association in 1964 and 1965.

  • We monitored the butterfly community dynamics from March to October for the three years (2002, 2003, 2004). The study areas were consisted of the five sectors with pine forest (Pinus rigida) and mixed oak forests at Mt. Midong in Chungwongun, Chungchungbukdo, Korea. We found that the total numbers of butterfly species were 59 species and the total individuals were 1,513. There was no change the number of species (44 species) during the study period but the composition of species and the number of individuals were different such as 414, 561, and 538, respectively. The most abundant species were Minois dryas (25%) in 2002, Polygonia c-aureum (24%) in 2003, and P. c-aureum (22%) in 2004. On the contrary, the number of singleton species was 20 species in 2002, 15 species in 2003, and 15 species in 2004. We found that there was the seasonal difference in species composition of butterfly community. The species diversity of butterfly community was the highest at sector 4 and sector 5 and lowest at sector 2. Main reason of the butterfly dynamics was strongly supposed to the human activity. We could suggest that the butterfly monitoring study must be a good way to measure the change of butterfly habitats including anthropogenic activity and the natural disturbances.

  • A microwave vacuum (MW/V) dryer was developed for drying short roundwoods, from which woodcraft souvenirs in Korean market are mostly made, and which were hardly dried without defects in a conventional kiln. It consisted of three 1.5 kW magnetrons of 2,450 MHz, a vacuum pump, a load cell of 100 kg and a cavity of $580{\times}580{\times}1,360\;mm^3$. A computer program was developed to switch on or off the magnetrons according to drying schedules, those were based on microwave injection time or the average of wood temperatures. To evaluate the new MW/V dryer the roundwood specimens of rigida pine, poplar and birch were dried. Their log diameters and lengths ranged from 125 to 25 em and from 25 to 50 cm, respectively. In spite of the presence of minor drying defects, the MW/V drying is found to be an effective method for drying short roundwoods. Wooden turneries made of red alder and ash logs were also MW/V dried from green to 4%MC without any degradation. The rates of the MW/V drying were examined for three different lengths of poplar logs.

  • For the modification of kiln drying schedule, rela ons between drying resistance R and moisture content or drying times were found 2.5cm-and 5.0cm-thick pitch pine (Pinus rigida Mill.) board and dimension lumber by the conventional kiln drying schedule until the average moisture content was 10%. The results of this study were as follows. 1. Drying resistance increased curvilinearly as moisture content decreased, and was higher for dimension lumber than for board at a given moisture content. The relationships between drying resistance and moisture content for the conventional kiln drying schedule and thickness of lumber were 1) $R_{2.5}=6.795\times10^3M^{-1.27^{**}}$ for 2.5cm-thick board by the conventional kiln drying schedule. 3) $R_{5.0}=5.206\times10^4M^{-1.55^{**}}$ for 5.0cm-thick dimension lumber by the conventional kiln drying schedule. 2. As drying time increased, moisture content decreased and drying resistance increased at the same time. Gradient of slope for dimension lumber was gentler than board. 3. The predicted drying times to 10% moisture content with the conventional kiln drying schedule were a little shorter than actual drying times with relatively small error. 4. It is necessary for the conventional kiln drying schedule to be modified to provide the desired final moisture content at minimum drying time with no significant degrade under severe drying conditions. 5. The kiln factors for 2.5cm-thick board and 5.0cm-thick dimension lumber with the conventional kiln drying schedule were 1.112, 1.136, respectively.

  • This study was conducted to understand the long-term changes in soil physiochemical properties and seedling growth in Larix kaempferi (larch) stands planted in clear-cut larch and Pinus rigida (pine) forest soils over an 11-year period after reforestation. Two-year-old bare-root larch seedlings were planted in 2009-2010 at a density of 3,000 seedlings ha-1 in clear-cut areas that harvested larch (Chuncheon and Gimcheon) and pine (Wonju and Gapyeong) stands. We analyzed the physiochemical properties of the mineral soils sampled at 0-20 cm soil depths in the planting year, and the 3rd, 7thand 11th years after planting, and we measured seedling height and root collar diameter in those years. We found significant differences in soil silt and clay content, total carbon and nitrogen concentration, available phosphorus, and cation exchangeable capacity between the two stands; however, seedling growth did not differ. The mineral soil was more fertile in Gimcheon than in the other plantations, while early seedling growth was greatest in Gapyeong. The seedling height and diameter at 11 years after planting were largest in Wonju (1,028 tree ha-1) and Chuncheon (1,359 tree ha-1) due to decreases in stand density after tending the young trees. The soil properties in all plantations were similar 11 years after larch planting. In particular, the high sand content and high available phosphorus levels (caused by soil disturbance during clear-cutting and planting) showed marked decreases, potentially due to soil organic matter input and nutrient uptake, respectively. Thus, early reforestation after clear-cutting could limit nutrient leaching and contribute to soil stabilization. These results provide useful information for nutrient management of larch plantations.

  • This study have done to get the basical information that would be useful to make the ecological planting, selection of suitable species and weeding plan by the relation between the leading shoot elongation of several species and the climatic factors in the plantation. Sampling measurement have been done in the trial forest of Korean German Forest Management Project located in Joil-ri, Samnam-myeon and Ichcon-ri, Sangbug-myeon, Ulju-gun. The former is in lowland at 100m latidude and the latter is in highland of 600 m latitude. The elongation of leading shoot has been measured in the plantation with 10 days interval from the beginning of March in 1979 and the climatic datas has gotten in the weather station closed to the plantation. 1. The change of air temperature and rainfall in each measuring site is like Fig 1. and 2. The similar temperature in 600 m high latitude is coming about 10 days latter than 100 m latitude. 2. Genus pine as Pinus thunbergii, P. rigida, P. rigitaeda. P. koraiensis and P. taeda begin their leading shoot growth during March and air temperature in that time is around $6^{\circ}C$. In highland their beginning of leading shoot elongation has been found out 10 days latter than lowland. However Abies, Larix and Picea has shown to open their leading shoot during May, 40 days late in comparing with genus pine, and then temperature is making around $15^{\circ}C$. But Cryptomeria, Chamaecyparis and Cedrus deodora has shown their leading shoot opening in March in lowland and May in high land. The reason of late opening, specially in highland, seems to be the influence of winter frost. 3. Most of leading shoot elongation of genus pine has finished during the end 10 days of April and May under range of air temperate $10^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$ and other species has finished most of their elongation during the end 10 days of May and June with air temperature range of $18^{\circ}C$ to $20^{\circ}C$. So the suitable season of weeding works show to genus pine in May and other species in June. 4. The leading shoot growth of genus pine has started earlier and closed earlier too than other species and, when over than $20^{\circ}C$ air temperature, their growth is decreasing quickly. Pices abies as well show to be decreased suddenly in over than $20^{\circ}C$ temperature. Other species show the similar trend when over than $22^{\circ}C$. This reason is considered as high temperature of summer season. 5. Annual elongated days of leading shoot of Picea abies is 50 days, Abies hollophylla 70 days, and more than 85 percentage of shoot growth of Pinus koraiensis and Larix leptolepsis are growing during 70 dys as well. The shoot growing days of Chamaecyparis, P. rigida, P. rigitaeda, P. taeda and P. shunbergii show longer period as over than 120 days. 6. The shoot elongation times per year of Abies and Picea has closed as one times and Genus pine is continuring their elongation more than two times. But Cryptomeria, Chamaecyparis, Cedrus deodora and Larix show one or two times elongation depending on the measuring site. The reason of continuring elongation more than than two times seems to be influenced by the temperature in summer season except the genetical reason. 7. Depending on the above results, as the high temperature in summer season could give the influence to grow the leading shoot in the plantation, this would be the considering point on the ecological planting and selection of the suitable species to the slope aspect. The elongation pattern by the season show to be the considering point too to decide the the weeding and fertilizer dressing time by the species.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide data for the restoration of 'Yongyun(龍淵)' and 'Hwahongmun(華虹門)' through an investigation of the vicinity of their original landscapes at the time of construction of Hwaseong in Suwon and through tracing the transformative process of the environments of this vicinity. The results are as follows; As identified by 'Yongyunjung(龍淵亭)' and 'Yongdugak(龍頭閣)', other names of Yongyun, 'Banghwasuryujung(訪花隨柳亭)', which was built on 'Yongduam', is a facility whose place identity is highlighted with a sense of unity with Yongyun. The south lakefront of Yongyun, bordering Banghwasuryujung, has boundaries that make the best use of the natural geographical features of Yongduam while the current circumference of Yongyun is comparatively shorter than its original state. The size of 'Joongdo(中島)', however, seems to be an example of apparent over-design complement and reorganize 'Joongdo', which had been restored larger than its original state at the time of restoration in the 1970s. The depth of 'Yongyun' was created to be lower than the actual depth, without consideration for its initial depth, as soil was accumulated through continuous flooding after it was created. It is assumed that the original drains which were installed about 10m inside the lake were created facing the stream. As regards the planting environment, a circular planting of willows was made in the outskirts of 'Yongyun', except the 'Yongduam' which is a pure forest, and a mix of 'Pinus densiflora', shrubbery and deciduous broad leaf trees was planted in 'Joongdo'. Of the plants growing in the area of this study, plant species introduced to Korea after Hwaseong was constructed are found, most of which provide interest and attraction. The old pine trees growing in a group once grew in the castle areas of the vicinity even in the 1920s, the period of Japanese occupation, but they disappeared from the area in the aftermath of subsequent urban development and the Korean War. Although restored to the site, the number and space taken up by these trees are insignificant compared to those of the original environment. On the basis of these results, the following is considered necessary for the true restoration of the vicinity of 'Yongyun' and 'Hwahongmun': First, the grounds of 'Yongyun' should be dredged deeply enough to expose the bedrock and should be recreated in the rough outline of a half moon by extension to the southwest toward 'Yongduam' and 'Hwahongmun', and the size of 'Joongdo' should be significantly reduced. Secondly, considering that most plant species, except the pine trees and wild trees in 'Yongduam', are non-native plants introduced in order to provide such attractions such as the appreciation of scenic areas, they should be replaced with native species, mainly with the pine trees which were utilized during the construction of Hwaseong. The weeping willows planted in the 'middle-island' should be relocated to the outskirts of 'Yongyun', and replaced with pine trees as the major trees and maple trees or deciduous broadleaf trees to fill in the gaps. Thirdly, exotic species such as the 'Pinus rigida' planted in a group around 'Banghwasuryujung' and 'Bugammun' and 'Pinus strobus' planted in the vicinity of Hwahongmun' should be removed.
