  • Rheological properties of Tongjinbyeo(Japonica) and Samgangbyeo($J{\times}Indica$) rice starches gelatinized with thermal or alkali solutions were investigated with rotational viscometer(Brabender Viscotron). The two starches showed Bingham pseudoplastics behavior in $4{\sim}8%$ thermal or alkali gelatinized starch solutions. Rheological properties of thermal gelatinized starch solutions were similar between the two varieties. However, alkali gelatinized Samgangbyeo starch solutions showed higher values of yield stress and consistency index than that of Tongjinbyeo starch. The values of pseudoplasticity, yield stress and consistency index were higher in the thermal gelatinized samples than those of in the alkali gelatinized ones.

  • An attempt was made to correlate the polymerization temperature and rheological and thermal properties of acrylonitrile (AN)-acrylamide (AM) copolymers. The copolymers were synthesized at different polymerization temperature. The copolymer structure was characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and Infrared spectrum (IR). The rheological and thermal properties were investigated by a viscometer and differential scanning calorimeter-thermogrametric (DSC-TG) analysis, respectively. When the polymerization temperature increased from $41^{\circ}C\;to\;65^{\circ}C$, the molecular weight $(\bar{M}_w)$ of copolymers decreased from 1,090,000 to 250,000, while its conversion increased from $18\%\;to\;63\%$, and the polymer composition changed slightly. To meet the requirements of carbon fibers, the rheological and thermal properties of products were also investigated. It was found that the relationship between viscosity and $\bar{M}_w$ was nonlinear and the viscosity index (n) decreased from 3.13 to 2.69, when the solution temperature increased from $30^{\circ}C\;to\;65^{\circ}C$. This suggests the dependence of viscosity upon $\bar{M}_w$ is higher at lower solution temperature. According to the result of activation energy, the sensivity of viscosity to solution temperature is higher for AN-AM copolymers synthesized at higher polymerization temperature. The result of thermal analysis shows that the copolymers obtained at higher polymerization temperature are easier to cyclization evidenced from lower initiation temperature. The weight loss behavior changed irregularly with polymerization temperature due to irregular change of liberation heat.

  • In this study, the thermal and rheological characteristics of a 10 wt.% addition of aluminum particles and the effect of the particle size were investigated to qualitatively analyze the paraffin fuel entrainment regression rate. The results revealed that the addition of aluminum particles and their relative particle size affected the rheological characteristics, rather than the thermal characteristics. Moreover, it was found that the variation of thermal properties had a minor effect on the entrainment regression rate, in comparison to the variation in rheological properties.

  • We investigated thermal, rheological, morphological and mechanical properties of a binary blend of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene succinate adipate) (PBSA). The blends were extruded and their molded properties were examined. DSC thermograms of blends indicated that the thermal properties of PLA did not change noticeably with the amount of PBSA, but thermogravimetric analysis showed that thermal stability of the blends was lower than that of pure PLA and PBSA. Immiscibility was checked with thermal data. The rheological properties of the blends changed remarkably with composition. The tensile strength and modulus of blends decreased with PBSA content. Interestingly, however, the impact strength of PLA/PBSA (80/20) blend was seriously increased higher than the rule of mixture. Morphology of the blends showed a typical sea and island structure of immiscible blend. The effect of the blend composition on the biodegradation was also investigated. In the early stage of the degradation test, the highest rate was observed for the blend containing $80wt\%$ PBSA.

  • The effects of 1 wt.% N-benzylpyrazinium hexafluoroantimonate (BPH) as a thermal latent initiator and blend compositions composed of 0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 wt.% of phenol-novolac resin to epoxy resin were investigated in terms of cure kinetics, thermal stabilities and rheological properties. Thermal latent properties of BPH were measured from the conversion as a function of reaction temperature on a dynamic DSC. This cationic BPH system turned out to be an effective thermal latent initiator in the epoxy-phenol curing system. And the increase of phenol-novolac resin concentration led to the decrease in the latent temperature and to the increase of cure activation energy ($E_a$) of the blend system. The thermal stability and activation energy ($E_t$) for decomposition, gel-time and activation energy ($E_c$) for cross-linking from rheometer increased within the composition range of 20~40 wt.% of phenol-novolac resin. This implies that the three-dimensional cross-linking may take place among hydroxyl group within phenol resin, epoxide ring within epoxy resin and BPH.

  • In this work, the cure kinetics and rheological and mechanical properties of diglycidylether of bispheonol A (DGEBA, EP)/polyurethane (PU) blends were investigated. The 1 wt% N-benzylpyrazinium hexafluoroantiminate (BPH) was used as a latent thermal catalyst. Latent properties were performed by measurement of the conversion as a function of reaction temperature using DSC. And the rheological properties of the blend systems were investigated under isothermal conditions using a rheometer. Crosslinking activating energies (Ec) were also determined from the Arrhenius equation based on gel time and curing temperature. The impact strengths were measured as mechanical properties of the casting specimens. The BPH in the blend systems could be an excellent latent thermal catalyst without any co-initiator. The rheological results showed that Ec was highest when PU content was 30 wt% which was in good agreement with the impact strengths. This was probably due to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the hydroxyl group in PU and EP, resulting in increasing the crosslinking density.

  • Different amounts of zinc stearate were incorporated as a plasticizer into poly(styrene-co-sodium methacrylate) ionomers prepared by bulk-suspension plymerization and neutralization with sodium hydroxide and effects of the zinc stearate on the thermal and rheological properties were investigated. It was obseved that the crystallization of zinc stearate in the ionomers were partially suppressed depending on the content of ionic moieties. It is postulated that the ionic moieties dissolved zinc stearate and suppressed crystallization of the zinc stearates. We speculated that 0.4~0.6 mole of zinc stearate was dissolved by one mole of the ionic moiety. Poly(styrene-co-sodium methacrylate) containing only the dissolved zinc stearates showed typical rheological properties of homogeneous systems in Cox-Mertz plots. However, poly(styrene-co-sodium methacrylate) containing crystallizable zinc stearates as well as dissolved ones showed typical rheological properties of heterogeneous systems.

  • Rheological and electrical properties of the polycarbonate (PC) / multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) were studied. The MWNT was funtoinalized by treating with the hydrogen peroxide ($H_{2}O_{2}$). The electrical conductivity showed higher value for the PC/MWNT ($H_{2}O_{2}$ treated, freeze drying) composites compared that of the PC/MWNT ($H_{2}O_{2}$ treated, thermal drying) composites. From the results of the morphological, rheological, and electrical properties of the PC/MWNT composites, it is suggested that the electrical and rheological properties of the PC/MWNT composites are affected by the MWNT-MWNT network structure which is related with the MWNT morphologies such as the degree of aggregation and aspect ratio of the MWNT.

  • The effect of novel N-crotyl-N,N-dimethyl-4-methylanilinium hexafluoroantimonate (CMH) curing agent as a thermal latent initiator on thermal behaviors, rheological properties, and thermal stability of diglycidylether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy cationic system was investigated. From DSC measurements of DGEBA/CMH system, it was shown that this system exhibits an excellent thermal latent characteristic at a given temperature. The conversion and conversion rate of DGEBA/CMH system increased with increasing the concentration of initiator, due to high activity of CMH. Rheological properties of the system were investigated under isothermal condition using a rheometer The gelation time was obtained from the analysis of storage modulus (G'), loss modulus (G"), and damping factor (tan $\delta$). As a result, the reduction of gelation time was affected by high curing temperature and concentration of CMH, resulting in high degree of network formation in cationic polymerization, due to difference of activity. The thermal stability of the cured epoxy resin was discussed in terms of the activation energy for decomposition and thermal factors determined from TGA measurements.ents.

  • Zein protein is one of the best biopolymer for edible film making and polyols are convenient plasticizers for biopolymers. Sorbitol, glycerol and manitol at three levels (0.5, 0.7, 1g/g of zein) were used as plasticizers. Rheological and thermal properties of zein resins were studied for determining their plasticization effectiveness. Sorbitol and glycerol had good plasticizing effects and could decrease viscoelastic modulus of zein resins considerably, but manitol was not as effective as them. Effects of plasticizers on thermal properties of resins were investigated by DSC at -100 to $150^{\circ}C$. No crystallization and melting peaks related to zein resin and plasticizers were observed. Thermograms showed that polyolic plasticizers and zein resin remained a homogeneous material throughout the cooling and heating cycles.
