  • This research analyzes Seoul station, a typical transfer station complex, focusing on the evaluation of its barrier free design suitable for vulnerable persons such as senior citizens. The analysis was conducted to assess its compliance with the "barrier-free" design standard for those with physical or other disabilities. This paper proposes a list of items to evaluate for transfer station complexes with a barrier-free design. The results showed that the overall connections and internal and sanitation facilities of (Seoul station/the design?)were excellent. However, because of the lack of transfer and guidance facilities, vulnerable persons felt uncomfortable when searching for information about transferring from one means of transport to another. Furthermore, there was an extremely high risk of accidents when they transferred to the bus station. Therefore, it is necessary to arrange the transfer information facilities, in order to improve their readability and visibility. Once this is done, vulnerable people will be able to use this station more safely and conveniently.

  • The floor field model is the micro pedestrian model based on a cellular automata for modeling pedestrian movement in the interior space using the static and dynamic floor field. It regards a form of pedestrian as square but the actual pedestrian's shape and size are similar to ellipsoid or rectangle. Because of this, we are difficult to give a rotation effect to pedestrians and there is a limit to reflect an impact of clogging and jamming. Also, this model is not able to reflect an impact of a posture and visibility effectively in the pedestrian movement. In this study, we suggest the improved pedestrian model incorporating the actual shape and size of pedestrian. The pedestrian's shape is defined not square but rectangle which is close to the actual body size of Korean. Also, we define the model which is able to represent the impact of clogging and jamming between pedestrians by adding the pedestrian's posture. We develop the simulator for testing the suggested model and study the difference between two models by comparing a number of effects. As a result, we could confirm solving the problem with dynamic value in the existed model and reflecting the panic effect in evacuation situation.

  • Urban space structure tends to have a significant change in accordance with maintenance of urban infrastructure such as a traffic route. For this reason, quantitative analysis has been needed to establish spatial distribution and location patterns by considering change of both road accessibility and urban infrastructure level, which can have the most pervasive influence in urban development process. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze spatio-temporal urban morphology through considering distribution patterns of road among transportation infrastructures, population, and spatial structure of metropolitan areas, focusing on Seoul where population growth and the size of urban area have been dramatically increased. For this, we firstly developed and constructed time-series GIS database by using satellite images and topographic maps of the last 70 years to analyze variables which affect urban growth and transportation. In particular, we analyzed the transform of the system of the street by Space Syntax which is able to grasp hierarchical spatial structure through visibility of space and spatial cognition in terms of accessibility. What's more, we analyzed and visualized the relationship urban morphology and road according the regions of Seoul through IPA(Importance Performance Analysis). In terms of the integration land-use and transportation, Space Syntax approach is expected to contribute to efficient urban planning through understanding the influence which various transportation phenomena has an effect on urban development patterns.

  • Recently varieties of user groups are formed as the number of people using cyber chatting gets increased and there are many changes in the range and field of its use. But because most of the cyber chatting systems are being operated to enlarge the additional sonics use, the using environments are stereotyped. And as its function is being various as well, it can not provide with a user-centered environment. So this thesis compares and analyzes the problems derived from the usability evaluation for solving the problems in using cyber chatting systems, and presents the guidelines of emotion-intended user interface design for improving the usability as the result of the analysis. First, this study investigates cyber chatting systems as a means of web communication tools through the existing literatures. Secondly, this study finds out the problems in using them through satisfaction evaluation, heuristic evaluation, performance evaluation, and observation evaluation and presents a way of solving the provisional problems in using them as the analysis of the result of usability evaluation. And this was proceeded for the purpose of applying and activating the better usability evaluation of cyber chatting systems later. Through the usability evaluation, it is found out that the structuralization of chatting function, the screen visibility by the size and arrangement of the compositional elements of a screen, and the improvement and development of the proper metaphor use of images and functions by the communication environment are necessary.

  • Dye markers are used in the study of subterranean termites to determine colony territories and population sizes. Dyes not only allow the study of termite biology, but can also be used for control purposes. Although Reticulitermes speratus kyushuensis causes damage to wooden historical properties in Korea, the dye markers have not been applied. Therefore, we evaluated the applicability of Nile Blue A dye for R. s. kyushuensis. Filter papers dyed with concentrations of 0.05%, 0.10%, and 0.25% (w/w) were each fed to termite populations through a no-choice feeding test for 1, 3, or 7 days. After 4 weeks, the survival rate, dyeing rate, and maintenance of dyeing were recorded. The results showed high survival rates with lower dye concentrations and shorter feeding periods. Among the combinations of concentrations and days, high survival rates, dyeing rates, and dyeing maintenance periods were found at concentrations of 0.05% and 0.10% for 3 days of feeding. These maximized the survivorship and visibility. The results from the current study can be applied to investigate the ecology and control of R. s. kyushuensis in both the laboratory and field.

  • Most multimedia contains location information whether they are implicit or explicitly, and which are very useful for several purposes. In particular, we may use location information in defining query conditions to retrieve relevant multimedia. For this reason, a number of works have been done to organize and retrieve geo-referenced multimedia data. However, they mostly focus on outdoor space where position is identified by (x, y, z) coordinates. In this paper, we focus on multimedia in an alternative space, indoor space, which differs from outdoor space in several aspects. First indoor space is considered as symbolic space, where location is identified by a symbolic code such as room number rather than coordinates. Second, topological information is a crucial element in providing indoor spatial information services. Third, indoor space is in more micro-scale than outdoor space, which influences on determining the visibility of cameras. Based on these different characteristics of indoor space, we survey the requirements of management systems of indoor geo-referenced multimedia. Then we propose a geo-coding scheme for multimedia in indoor space as an extension of IndoorGML, an OGC(Open Geospatial Consortium) candidate standard for indoor spatial information. We also present a prototype system called, IngC (INdoor Geo-Coding) developed to store and manage indoor geo-referenced multimedia.

  • Although traffic information has been actively analyzed using big data, it has not been used as much with the consideration of driver characteristics. Among the various types of information, road signs can directly affect the driver. Road signs must provide the optimal information that enables drivers to reach their destinations with ease as well as information suitable for navigation systems. However, present road sign rules provide standardized information, regardless of the road type or size. This study suggests a method for providing road information that will help drivers determine their behavior. First, the minimum character size that can be used on a road sign for each design speed was obtained with respect to the visibility and decipherability of a road sign. Instead of conventional diagram-based direction guidance, a scenario using split-based direction guidance was created. To verify the effectiveness of the provided information, a three-dimensional simulated road environment was constructed, and a driving simulator was used for the test. At a simple plane intersection, the driver was not greatly influenced by directional guidance, but at a complex, three-dimensional intersection, the driver preferred summary-based directional guidance, which is instinctive guidance, over diagram-based guidance. On the basis of the test results, a secondary verification test that applied split-based guidance at a three-dimensional intersection confirmed that the driver had no problems in making decisions.

  • Despite the legal and institutional measures that have been enacted for the safety management of school facilities, the number of school accidents has continued to rise, particularly in regards to the number of accidents related to schools. However, school facilities have had a difficult time creating safe school environments for the school administration and local governments. This is due to the fact that the Office of Education and the Ministry of Education, not the school or educational offices, have insufficient institutional devices such as standards and systems for the promotion of safe school environments. This study attempted to confirm the direction of the improvement of the safety of school facilities. To this end, four safety assessment topics (separation of pedestrians, pedestrian path management, pedestrian visibility, and surrounding risk factors) were derived based on the surveyed data for the safety of the external environment of domestic and international school facilities. 179 school facilities nationwide (kindergartens, elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and special schools) were analyzed for current cases of accidents that occurred mainly on school roads. Roughly 50% of the analyzed evaluation scores showed that it is necessary to improve the external environment of school facilities.

  • On January 1, 2005, the Special Act on Metropolitan Air Quality Improvement, known as the Blue Sky 21 Program, entered into force. This Special Act is aimed at reducing the annual average concentrations of $PM_{10}$ and $NO_2$ to $40{\mu}g/m^3$ and 22ppb, respectively, from their current levels of $76{\mu}g/m^3$ and 36ppb, within the next 10 years. While the main focus of the Act is to reduce $PM_{10}$ and $NO_2$ emissions, the government also anticipates that these reductions would lessen high ozone occurrences and improve visibility. However, reducing local PM emissions would not decrease $PM_{10}$ concentrations as much as expected since other significant sources, such as continental inflow and/or secondary formation from photochemical reactions, exist. This is corroborated by the fact that $PM_{10}$ in the greater Seoul Metropolitan area during the ozone season is mostly in the form of $PM_{2.5}$, which is secondarily formed on a regional scale. Furthermore, many modeling results indicate so-called '$NO_x$ disbenefits,' referring to the fostering of an increase in ozone concentrations from a decrease in $NO_x$ emissions, over an extensive area. In this paper, the current status of air quality in the Seoul Metropolitan area is reviewed, and several other issues, including the effect of long-range transport, photochemical characteristics, and tasks for successful implementation of the Special Act are discussed.
