  • The gimbal expansion joint for the pipe line of a liquid rocket engine undergoes high pressure and cyclic rotational displacement loadings. In present study, the moment analyses and tests of the internal-type gimbal expansion joint for the engine were performed. The moment components due to spring stiffness, friction and lateral force were obtained using a analytic method and their sums at low and high pressures were compared with the test results. Also, applying a $MoS_2$ dry film lubricant to the pin of a external hinge expansion joint, it is tested that the galling of the pin was removed and the friction coefficient was decreased for low pressures.

  • An accurate evaluation of three-dimensional (3D) Time-Domain Green Function (TDGF) in infinite water depth is essential for ship's hydrodynamic analysis. Various numerical algorithms based on the TDGF properties are considered, including the ascending series expansion at small time parameter, the asymptotic expansion at large time parameter and the Taylor series expansion combines with ordinary differential equation for the time domain analysis. An efficient method (referred as "Present Method") for a better accuracy evaluation of TDGF has been proposed. The numerical results generated from precise integration method and analytical solution of Shan et al. (2019) revealed that the "Present method" provides a better solution in the computational domain. The comparison of the heave hydrodynamic coefficients in solving the radiation problem of a hemisphere at zero speed between the "Present method" and the analytical solutions proposed by Hulme (1982) showed that the difference of result is small, less than 3%.

  • This study was conducted to examine the uncertainty analysis of the stem density and biomass expansion factor for Pinus rigida in Korea. A total of 57 representative sample trees were harvested. The age class in Pinus rigida forests was divided into two, which were stands with less than 20 years and more than 21 years. The influence of stand ages on biomass expansion factor showed that it was statistically significant (p=0.0001), but it was not significant on stem density (p=0.8070). The results of this study based on the uncertainty evaluation method which were suggested by IPCC guide line indicated that stem density of the stand with less than 20 years were 30.92%, while were 25.12% the stands with more than 21years. The uncertainty in biomass expansion factor of less than 20 years and more than 21 years were 60.32% and 22.42%, respectively. The uncertainty of less than 20 years was higher compared to those stands with more than 21 years. In the case of old stand, it showed the lowest uncertainty results but younger stands showed the highest uncertainty results. This study could be applied to our country's emission factor by using stem density and biomass expansion factors which were less than 20 years and more than 21 years for Pinus rigida in Korea.

  • Since online betting occurs on online where anybody can access through internet, thus, the online gambling market has been expanding. Domestic illegal gambling market size is 4 times bigger than that of legal gambling market, and illegal online betting market is rapidly growing as well. Currently online gambling does exist domestically in form of Sports promotion voting rights, also known as, Toto and Proto and internet lottery. However, the need for other types of online gambling to be permitted, expanded and managed has been suggested. This research has analyzed online gambling users, online gambling addicts and general population's awareness on expansion and operation of online gambling, contraction measures of illegal online gambling and operation measures in case of permitted expansion of online gambling. The result of this research's analysis showed that each group has significantly different awareness level on positive and negative effects of permitting online gambling's expansion. Also, it showed that each group has significantly different awareness on permitting expansion of racing betting as a legal gambling item. Since it is the proven fact that illegal online gambling users could turn into legal users and that users could use the service more positively if online gambling is legalized through allowance and expansion process; one could expect the positive effects from permitting expansion of online gambling.

  • The theoretical study is developed for predicting the thermal expansion changes of composites which include complex inclusion, which is used three-dimensional ellipsoid model ($a_1>a_2>a_3$), which has two aspect ratios (the primary aspect ratio, $\rho_{\alpha}=a_1/a_3$ and the secondary aspect ratio, $\rho_{\beta}=a_1/a_2$). We can predict the feature of general thermal expansion factors by theoretical approach of matrix with aligned ellipsoidal inclusion using the Eshelby's equivalent tensor. The coefficients of longitudinal linear thermal expansion ${\alpha}_{11}$ decrease to those of inclusions, ${\alpha}_f$, as both aspect ratios increase. The coefficients of transverse linear thermal expansion of composites ${\alpha}_{33}$ initially increase and show the parabolic corves with maximum values, as the concentrations of filler increase. The coefficient of thermal expansion, ${\alpha}_{22}$ in the transverse direction decreases, as $\rho_{\alpha}$ increases, however, ${\alpha}_{22}$ increases as $\rho_{\beta}$ increases. The coefficient of linear thermal expansion of composites, ${\alpha}_{33}$ in the normal direction increases, as $\rho_{\alpha}$ increases, while ${\alpha}_{33}$ decreases as $\rho_{\beta}$ increases.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the feasibility of CFBC artificial fine aggregate as a substitute for natural aggregate used in dry mortar. The basic performance of the flow, compressive strength and dry shrinkage of the dry mortar was evaluated. Four types of test dry mortar specimens using natural aggregate without expansion admixture, a specimen with modified CaO expansion admixture and natural aggregate, a specimen with modified CaO expansion admixture and CFBC artificial fine aggregate, and a specimen using CFBC artificial fine aggregate without modified CaO expansion admixture were evaluated respectively. As a result of evaluation of drying shrinkage performance at 20th day of age, the dry shrinkage performance of the specimen using modified CaO expansion admixture was found to be the highest at $250{\times}10^{-6}$. On the other hand, the specimen containing the modified CaO expansion admixture with CFBC artificial aggregate exhibited a shrinkage of $410{\times}10^{-6}$, and the drying shrinkage of specimen using natural fine aggregate without expansion admixture was $450{\times}10^{-6}$. When the modified CaO expansion material was used, and exhibited performance equal to or higher than that of the shrinkage-drying property.

  • Most of domestic expansion joint system was applied by exposed expansion joint system. There are cases where it is damaged by driving. As the result noise and impact happened, and the social cost due to frequent repair works is increasing. So based on the Asphalt Plug Joint(APJ) system that applied in the United States and Europe, new buried expansion joint system was lately developed a system of Buried Folding Lattice Joint(BFLJ) that changed substructure. In this research, we have tested for durability and flexibility performance of buried expansion joint system that based on the type of asphalt mixture. Also we have evaluated for durability of BFLJ system against vehicle load using accelerated pavement testing. As a result of the experiment, the developed BFLJ system gives high flexibility performance and resolves transformation concentration along the joint section more than APJ system. Also it could be seen that the BFLJ system could overcome the disadvantages of APJ and prevent early damage. Because surface deflection of BFLJ system against vehicle load was measured low, and sub system in the buried expansion joint system was not damaged against vehicle load.

  • Needle coke is an important material for graphite electrodes. Delayed coking is used to produce needle coke. Producing good quality needle coke is not simple because it is a multi-parameter controlled process. Apart from that, it is important to understand the mechanism responsible for the delayed coking process, which involves mesophase formation and uniaxial rearrangement. Temperature and pressure need to be optimized for the different substances in every feedstock. Saturate hydrocarbon, aromatic, resin and asphaltene compounds are the main components in the delayed coking process for a low Coefficient Thermal Expansion value. In addition, heteroatoms, such as sulphur, oxygen, nitrogen and metal impurities, must be considered for a better graphitization process that prevents the puffing effect and produces better mesophase formation.

  • Physical properties of artificial graphite electrodes were evaluated along three different directions; circumferential (X), radial (Y), and axial (Z) directions. Four kinds of commercial electrode products were used in this study for the evaluation; pole (AP) and nipple (AN) of manufacturer A, pole (BP) and nipple (BN) of manufacturer B. The mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties in X and Y directions were very similar to each other. In Z direction, however, the mechanical properties, including flexural strength and compressive strength, were higher, and electric resistance and thermal expansion were much lower than those in the other directions. The microstructures observed by optical microscope and scanning electron microscope revealed that the differences in properties by the measuring direction were caused by the preferential alignment of needle cokes along the Z direction. When comparing the properties of the electrode samples in the same direction, the mechanical properties mainly depended on the bulk density or porosity of the samples as well as preferential alignment of needle cokes.

  • This study described a results of groundwater injection test in cavity, in order to evaluate characteristics of cavity expansion under pavement. That is, groundwater amount proportional to the cavity volume was injected into the generated cavity step by step, and then the cavity with the changed size was monitored as the injected groundwater was drained. The test result showed that the cavity volume by groundwater injection increased, and then it converged or decreased. This means that some of the relaxation soil around the cavity collapsed, and the fine-grained soils in some soils filled the void in the surrounding soils when the cavity is expanded by groundwater injection. The volume change and expansion characteristics of the cavity according to the groundwater injection step were analyzed. The result showed that the cavity extended laterally. Therefore, it was found that the cavity expansion is caused by the repetition of the relaxation soil collapse due to the groundwater flow and the loss of the collapsed soil below the cavity.
