Presently, most of gold is smelted from gold concentrates and anode slimes. Anode slimes are by-products of nonferrous smelters such as lead and copper. In addition, gold is recovered from waste dental and medical materials, waste gold coating solution, and waste printed circuit boards (waste PCBs). The smelting method of gold from gold concentrates and various wastes containing high concentration of gold is largely divided into chlorination, cyanidation, and amalgamation methods. For the anode slimes, electrolysis method is usually used, which largely consists of roasting, high temperature melting and electrolysis processes. Also, various wastes containing low concentration of gold are mainly treated by pyrometallursical processes. In the paper, current status on gold smelting technology is reviewed, and a novel process for gold smelting which is researched in the recent is briefly introduced.
Consumption of nickel is continuously increasing and the wastes of secondary battery, ferrite and catalyst containing Ni are also generated periodically. Among those wastes, the aim of this research is the recovery of nickel from used Ni-Cd recharge battery. Battery consisted of Ni 24 wt%, Fe 30 wt% and Cd 18.5 wt%. Metal was recovered by solvent extraction after leaching. Cadmium was leached completely in 1N-HCl and Ni was recovered above 70%. 30 vol% MSP-8 separated Cd and Ni completely from acidic leaching solution. In addition $NH_4NO_3$ as one of ammonium salt type leachants showed an excellent leaching selectivity to Ni and Cd. Ni in leached solution was recovered completely by LIX-extractant and more than 70% of Cd in raffinate was by D2EHPA.

This study was conducted to survey the attitude of Chuncheon citizens on food waste generation. About 50% of the citizens were generating $5{\sim}10{\ell}$ of MSW (municipal solid wastes) a week. These answers were almost from below 35 years old. And the citizens answered that the ratio of FW (food waste) to MSW were 10-30%. They were generating FW enveloped in a standardized vinyl bag after dewatering. About 10% of the answers were generating FW with MSW without any dewatering. The reason for FW generation in large quantities was to cook and buy much more food materials than needed. They thought that malodor and harmful insect were the most severe problems from FW storage. The systematic management was the most needed in individual restaurants. They answered that an individual citizen should make an effort to reduce FW generation. However, in fact, they did not do their best to try to reduce FW generation. They agreed that an individual citizen should try to reform 'present food culture' and to think FW as resources.
In this study, we investigated a new recycling method of phenol resin, which is widely used to make electric insulation boards and adhesives, into carbon particles by using supercritical fluids. Because phenol resin is insoluble and infusible, most of the phenol resin wastes are buried in the ground or incinerated, which leads to environmental pollution. Therefore, development of a new method to recycle phenol resin waste is an urgent issue. In this study, phenol resin waste was treated with four sub/supercritical solvents: ethanol, acetone, water, and methanol. For all the sub/supercritical solvents, the phenol resin wastes were broken down into carbon nano particles at much lower temperatures than that required in the existing carbon particle manufacturing processes. We investigated the difference of morphologies and physical properties of recycled carbon particles according to the use of various solvents. As a result, carbon nano particles with the same amorphous structure were obtained from phenol resin waste with the usage of various sub/supercritical solvents at much lower temperature.
Recovery of novel metals such as Au, Ag and Ni from wastes PCB was investigated by slag treatments. The CaO-$Al_2O_3$(-$SiO_2$) and CaO-$SiO_2$-$CaF_2$ slags were employed in the present study. The PCB/Cu ratio is recommended to be lower than unity. The use of CaO-$SiO_2$-$CaF_2$ slag provided the more higher yield of Au, Ag and Ni than the CaO-$Al_2O_3$(-$SiO_2$) slag did, which was mainly due to the lower melting point and the viscosity of $CaF_2$-containing slag. The terminal descending velocity of metal droplets in the slag phase increased with decreasing slag viscosity.

A fundamental study on methane conversion for the collection organic wastes of agriculture, forestry and fishers was performed in a laboratory scale. As a result, selected Run B sample were obtained 18.41 C/N Ratio and 168.96 mg/L TCOD; Under the biochemical methane potential test, theoretical and actual methane generation was 313.6 mg/L VS added and 234.2 mg/L VS added, respectively; However, methane conversion from Run B were occurred 74% by anaerobic digestion. By the first order reaction kinetics, kinetic constant were $0.2476d^{-1}$ for Run B. Three steps fill-up filter reactor was evaluated methane content 16% up to promote than blank reactor; TCOD and SCOD have reduced 44.7% and 44.2%, respectively.

In this study, thermal weight loss, non-isothermally experiment, chemical composition analysis, calorific value, activation energy (E) were investigated to analysis the kinetic study of RDF, wood pellets, waste wood, waste textile and waste vinyl. When the chemical composition of solidification fuel was compared, the moisture content of RDF was less than the wood pellet and when the kinetic study was compared, the combustion reaction rate of the waste vinyl was higher than any other solidification fuels. However when the combustion efficiency was compared by the activation energy, the RDF had the higher efficiency than other wastes. RDF can be found that the reaction takes place between $320{\sim}720^{\circ}C$ depending on the heating rate.

For the probiotic feed production from residual food waste by using the yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus, aerobic liquid fermentation was attempted at $35^{\circ}C$. After grinding finely, optimal fermentation conditions of the substrate was investigated in shaking incubator. By controlling water content yeast growth was studied at each different solid content of 5, 10 and 15% respectively. The most active growth of the yeast was shown at 10%. For the stimulation of the cell growth, mixed culture with Aspersillus oryzae was conducted in a 2 litre-jar fermenter. As the results, the yeast growth rate was increased, but the maximum viable cell count amounted was slightly higher as $3.5{\times}10^9/ml$ than single culture.

The generation of construction waste has increased continuously in the recent years, becoming an important social issue. In this paper, the generation and treatment of construction waste in Korea was reviewed and a comparative analysis was performed between Korea and developed countries to suggest some efficient recycling strategies. The generation of construction waste has increased 4 times from 10 million ton/yr in 1996 to 40.3 million ton/yr in 2002. Of the construction waste generated in 2002, concrete debris waste occupied 60.4%. Approximately 14.5% of the construction waste is landfilled, 2,0% incinerated and 83.4% recycled, then the recycling rate might be relatively high. However, there is room for increasing landfill diversion. It is somewhat important to strenghten incentives for the outstanding recycling business. It is also needed to improve the recycled aggregate quality standard and impurity content standard. It is desirable to toughen the facility standard for the recycling aggregate business and the quality standard for the intermediate treatment business. Also, market for the intermediate product of the recycled aggregate should be activated. Finally, more recycling-oriented regulations governing the construction waste has to be developed with the efficient public education program.

Under consideration of construction waste recycling, candidate secondary products applicable for the civil and construction areas can be reliably employed based on the recycling cost analysis. For the validation purpose, probability-based cost analyses were performed to estimate recycling cost profit considering uncertainties. When recycling construction wastes, the costs at each stage are fully dependent on target products to be adopted. To achieve commercialization of each product, its quality has to be improved with economic efficiency through accurate evaluation of input costs. Based on the probabilistic recycling cost analysis, the cost benefit for target products was estimated with waste classification cost, transportation cost to recycling treatment facilities and production cost. All necessary information on the cost analysis were collected from literature, disclosure, and existing recycling companies. In addition, a cost difference between recycled and non-recycled events was made. As a result, a probability-based recycling cost estimate for candidate secondary products was herein presented.
