Evaluation of Drought Monitoring Using Satellite Precipitation for Un-gaged Basins (미계측지역의 위성강우 기반 가뭄감시 평가)

  • This study analyzed the applications of near real-time drought monitoring using satellite rainfall for the Korean Peninsula and un-gaged basins. We used AWS data of Yongdam-Dam, Hoengseong-Dam in Korea area, the meteorological station of Nakhon Rachasima, Pak chong for test-bed to evaluate the validation and the opportunity for un-gaged basins. In addition, we calculated EDI (Effective doought index) using the stations and co-located PERSIANN-CDR, TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission) TMPA (The TRMM Multisatellite Precipitation Analysis), GPM IMERG (the integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM) rainfall data and compared the EDI-based station data with satellite data for applications of drought monitoring. The results showed that the correlation coefficient and the determination coefficient were 0.830 and 0.914 in Yongdam-dam, and 0.689 and 0.835 in Hoengseng-Dam respectively. Also, the correlation coefficient were 0.830, 0.914 from TRMM TMPA datasets and compasion with 0.660, 0.660 based on PERSIANN-CDR and TRMM data in nakhon and pakchong station. Our results were confirmed possibility of near real-time drought monitoring using EDI with daily satellite rainfall for un-gaged basins.

A Study on the Development of the Flood Risk Index for Roads Considering Real-time Rainfall (실시간 강수량을 고려한 도로 침수위험지수 개발 방법에 대한 연구)

  • The damaged district by flooding has been changed from mainly farmland to cities due to the weather phenomena which is different from the past. This has caused not only irreparable damage of people's lives and property but social infrastructures. There also exist serious damages such as isolation of drivers and traffic jam as the roads were flooded. In this study, we suggested a method to develop a flood risk index focused on not Si, Gun or Gu but roads. In addition, flood risk index in the roads just at the moment, when it rains quantitatively, will be provided by using real-time rainfall information provided by the Weather Center. Then it should be helpful to prevent people from being isolated by flooded roads in advance.

Evaluation of Drain Pump System by Inundation Analysis in Urban Underground Passage (도시 지하차도 침수 분석을 통한 강제배제시설 평가)

  • A general rainfall outflow in urban drainage has early time of concentration because urban drainage areas are most paved area. In general, rainfall outflow is flowed in drainage pump station and is discharged to rivers in urban areas. However it is excluded through drainage pumps about a heavy rainfall which exceed the design rainfall and the rainfall outflows increase the urban inundation risk. A current pump operation is control according to water level of collecting well or reservoir in drain pump station. But recently, the localized downpours are happened frequently in urban drainage and the current pump stations are frequently incapable of the heavy rainfall outflows. In this study, a real urban inundation was simulated and the drain capacity of drain pump station was evaluated by analysis about flood-factor in urban underground passage. Then the analysis about the inundation was done by the simulation about the real rainfall which cause the inundation. Also, in the simulation the inundation risk and the evaluation of flood-factor were analyzed according to change of the pump operation rule.

  • Accurate and real time forecasting of runoff has a high priority in the drainage basins prone to short, high intensity rainfall events causing flash floods. To take into account the resolution of hydrological variables within a drainage basin, use of distributed system models is preferred. The Landsat Thematic Mapper(TM) observations enable detailed information on distribution of land cover and other related factors within a drainage basin and permit the use of distributed system models. This paper describes monitoring technique of rainfall excess by SCS curve number method. The time series maps of rainfall excess were generated for all the storm events to show the spatiotemporal distribution of rainfall excess within study basin. A combination of the time series maps of rainfall excess with a flow routing technique would simulate the flow hydrograph at the drainage basin outlet.

  • A hydrologic gauging network include a real-time measuring equipment was established within the Balhan watershed. Rainfall, stream water level, flow velocities were monitored at the six gauging stations. For stream flow gauging stations, the stage-discharge relationships were developed. The flow rate of the Balan watershed was 83.60% in 2001 and 48.79% in 2002.

  • Among the methods of precipitation data acquisition, a rain gauge station has a distinctive advantage of direct measurement of rainfall itself, but multiple stations should be installed in order to obtain areal precipitation data required for hydrological analysis. On the other hand, a rainfall radar may provide areal distribution of rainfall in real time though it is an indirect measurement of radar echoes on rain drops. Rainfall radars have been shown useful especially for forecasting short-term localized torrential storms that may cause catastrophic flash floods. CAPPI (Constant Altitude Plan Position Indicator), which is one of the several types of radar rainfall image data, has been provided on the Internet in real time by Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). It is one of the most widely available rainfall data in Korea with fairly high level of confidence as it is produced with bias adjustment and quality control procedures by KMA. The objective of this study is to develop an improved way to extract quantitative rainfall data applicable to even very small watersheds from CAPPI using CIVCOM, which is a new image processing method based on a vector-based scheme proposed in this study rather than raster-based schemes proposed by other researchers. This study shows usefulness of CIVCOM through comparison of rainfall data produced by image processing methods including traditional raster-based schemes and a newly proposed vector-based one.

  • 이류모형을 이용한 단기예측 레이더 강우자료와 관측 레이더자료의 비교를 통하여 얻어진 예측오차를 분석하였다. 임의 시점까지의 예측오차 장에 나타나는 확률분포 형태와 공간적 상관성을 분석하여 이들 특성을 반영하는 추후의 예측오차 장을 모의할 수 있었다. 모의된 예측오차 장과 합성된 단기예측 강우 장은 이류모형을 이용한 예측에 따른 불확실성 을 추계학적으로 반영한 예측강우를 제공한다.

Rainfall Estimation for Hydrologic Applications

  • The subject of the paper is the selection of the number and location of raingauge stations among existing ones for the computation of mean areal precipitation and for use as input of real-time flow prediction models. The weighted average method developed by National Weather Service was used to compute MAP over the Boone River basin in Iowa with a 40 year daily data set. Two different searching methods were used to find local optimal solutions. An operational rainfall-runoff model was used to determine the optimal location and number of stations for flow prediction.

Real-Time Flash Flood Evaluation by GIS Module at Mountainous Area (산악에서 돌발홍수예측을 위한 지리정보시스템의 적용)

  • The flood is the most general and frequently occurs among natural disasters. Generally flood by the rainfall which extends superexcellently for the occurrence but flash flood from severe rain storm gets up an absurd drowsiness at grade hour. This paper aims to 1 hour real-time flash flood and predict possibility at the area where is the possible flood will occur from the rainfall hour mountain after acquiring data in GIS(Geographic Information System) base by GcIUH(Geomorphoclimatic Instantaneous Unit Hydrograph). The flash flood occurrence is set up at 0.5m, 0.7m and 1.0m in standard depth. And this study suggests standard flood alarm which designed by probable flood according to duration time. The research result shows real-time flash flood evaluation has the suitable standard in the basin when comparing with the existing official warning announcement system considering topographical information.
